Hill was born in Winterport, Maine in 1886 and died in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1969. He was an artist of natural talent, being for the most part self-taught. A thirty-four gun ship built by the citizens of Salem and launched in 1799, then loaned to the Federal Government. In 1812, she captured the British Frigate Alert. Later she cruised in the Pacific, destroying the British whaling fleet, the loss amounting to two and a half million dollars. In March, 1814, the Essex was attacked by the British Frigates Cherub and Phoebe in neutral Valparaiso Harbor and captured.
