Toshiro Mifune, large portrait by Hiro 1966

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

HIRO (YASUHIRO WAKABAYASHI), PORTRAIT OF TOSHIRO MIFUNE, 40 x 40 - inch gelatin silver print on double weight paper in a welded aluminum frame, 1966, with a light signature recto. Hiro is best known for his brilliant fashion-related photographs. Mifune starred in many of Akira Kurosawa's great films, including Rashoman, Seven Samurai,Yojimbo, Throne of Blood, High and Low/ He also appeared in a number of American films including Midway and Grand Prix. This photograph was made in 1966.two months before the opening of Grand Prix. Only smaller size prints of this image are available from the Hiro studio. This life size one is very large, very rare in this size. It will require special shipping. The frame is only to protect the print, The photograph is squeezed slightly against the edges of the frame, causing a slight warp. The print itself is fine, but needs to be re-matted. It will then be perfectly flat. [4] This is very dramatic portrait, revealing many dimensions of the subject--- his power and his expressiveness.
