Damien Hirst Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1965 -

Best-known for his unusual installations and over-the-top style, British artist Damien Hirst has been exhibiting his works since the late 1980s. Damien Hirst's artwork ranges from a formaldehyde-preserved shark —entitled The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living – to a platinum cast of a human skull set with diamonds. Conversely, collectors also seek out Damien Hirst's prints of simple yet brilliant butterflies and prints of vivid dots and shapes.

As an art collector himself, he knows what appeals to buyers, so prices for Damien Hirst's art often range up to the millions. The 2017 exhibition of Damien Hirst's artwork called Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable garnered unfavorable reviews from the critics, but at the time of opening, art collectors had bought around 70 percent of the items. DAMIEN HIRST (Bristol 1965). "Spin painting circle", 2009. Acrylic on paper (spin painting). Presents wet stamp and dry stamp on the back.

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

DAMIEN HIRST (Bristol 1965). "Spin painting circle", 2009. Acrylic on paper (spin painting). Presents wet stamp and dry stamp on the back. Measurements: 52 cm (diameter). Damien Hirst, is especially recognized artistically for his "spin paintings", like the one shown here, which are paintings made on a rotating circular surface. Damien Hirst was born in Bristol on June 7, 1965, in a suburban environment with economic problems. He never knew his biological father and his mother married a car salesman, who left them when Hirst was 13. His mother, an amateur artist and devout Christian, took care of him, but because of his father's abandonment he had to be educated from the bottom up, which is perhaps the main reason why Damien Hirst argues that art is classless. He trained at the University of Leed while combining his studies with a job at the local mortuary, which he later abandoned to move to London. During this time he was working in construction and in turn applying to various art schools such as St Martins, or the faculty of Wales. He was finally accepted at Golsdmiths College, which, at the same time, and due to the economic recession in England, was a school that attracted bright students and creative tutors. While studying, Hirst financed his expenses by working on telephone surveys, a direct cause of his ability to fake any emotion over the phone. During his studies he also worked at McDonald's, and part-time at the Anthony D'Ofray gallery, where he learned the mechanics of the art market. Already in his second year of studies, Hirst, acquired the role of artist and curator, and managed to make an exhibition that would change the course of British art, it was his first solo exhibition with only 26 years. Four years later, in 1995, he won his second Turner Prize nomination for Mother and Child. At the age of 32, the Larry Gagosian Gallery offered him a major retrospective, after which he declared that he had no place left to exhibit, he had done it all and too fast. So soon the media baptized him with the name Hooligan Genius. Although he became a millionaire at the age of 40, Hirst's hypersensitivity became suspicious; wrapped in an aura of romanticism, he made revolutionizing the art world seem simple. On several occasions he has acknowledged his desire to be famous and in the face of criticism he has defended himself with phrases such as "they could not admit to themselves that they wanted to be famous and resented not being famous" or "I think my desire was to be more famous than rich, I think the desire to create art and be famous is like the desire to live forever two obsessions: death and celebrity". Damien Hirst has works in the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Palazzo Gras in Venice, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (Germany), the Hirshhorn in Washington D.C. and the Neu Galerie in Graz (Austria), among other important public and private collections.

DAMIEN HIRST (Bristol, UK, 1965). "Skull", 2009. Acrylic on paper (spin painting). Presents dry stamp of the artist and wet stamp on the back.

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

DAMIEN HIRST (Bristol, UK, 1965). "Skull", 2009. Acrylic on paper (spin painting). Presents dry stamp of the artist and wet stamp on the back. Measurements: 71 x 51 cm. This work was conceived for the exhibition "Requiem", held at PinchukArtCentre, Kiev, Ukraine, in 2009. The exhibition included over 100 works by the artist, such as 'A Thousand Years' (1990), 'With Dead Head' (1991) and 'Loving in a World of Desire' (1996), 'Requiem' presented the first exhibition of works from Hirst's series of oil paintings on canvas, which had begun in 2006. Two recurring elements in Hirst's work are evident in this work, the spin painting technique, and the presence of the skull. Death is the central theme of his work, which is why his work has always been surrounded by great controversy. He is best known for his Natural History series, in which dead animals are preserved, sometimes dissected, in formaldehyde. He is also known for his "spin paintings", such as the one shown here, made on a rotating circular surface. Damien Hirst was born in Bristol on June 7, 1965, in a suburban environment with economic problems. He never knew his biological father and his mother married a car salesman, who left them when Hirst was 13. ⊕ DAMIEN HIRST (BRITISH B.1965) PV258 CELESTINE VEIL signed, titled and dated CELESTINE VEIL / DAMIEN HIRST / 2019 on the reverse oil on card laid on canvas 59.5 x 42cm; 23 1/2 x 16 1/2in unframed Property from a Private Collection, Westminster Provenance HENI Gallery, London Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2022 Exhibited London, HENI Gallery, Damien Hirst: Paper Veils, 2022 A veil is a barrier, a curtain between two things, something that you can look at and pass through. It’s solid yet invisible and reveals and yet obscures the truth, the thing that we are searching for. Damien Hirst Repeated explosive splatters of green, pink, blue and yellow paint build up the surface of the present work. Thick dabs and spots of impasto are pristinely frozen with freshness, lightness and perpetual energy, each with their own distinct structure which curves and bends with the direction of the application of paint, bringing Hirst's studio practice to life. PV258 Celestine Veil is from Hirst's Veil Painting series begun in 2017. Each work is a unique and abstracted exploration of colour and texture which resemble botanical forms and are loosely inspired by the texture of the Iced Gems biscuits his grandmother used to give him as a child. Like so much of Hirst's experimental and diverse artistic oeuvre the work is an homage to art history. The application of paint is inspired by the optical innovations of Pontillism and the work of Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard, and its emphasis on all-over colour and gestural movement a reference to Abstract Expressionism, particularly the work of Willem De Kooning, who has been a life-long influence on Hirst. Situated firmly within his visual language of repetition, from pills to butterflies (see lot 90), the work also marks a return to Hirst's painting series from the 1980s and 90s, such as Spot Paintings (from 1986), Spin Paintings (from 1992) and Visual Candy (1993). Breaking from the confines of the grid which order his Spots and the restricted mechanical movement of the Spin Paintings, the Veils are liberated from physical limitations as intuitive expressions of colour, paint and technique. Hirst began producing his Veil Paintings in the same year as he showed his monumental and ambitious sculptures Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable in Venice. The large-scale production and decade-long planning for the project saw the artist return to a more meditative, intimate style of hand-painting which has permeated his artistic output since. The larger Veil Paintings were first exhibited at Gagosian in 2018, and the following year, in collaboration with HENI, Hirst produced 300 original smaller paintings. By working on an intimate scale in a limited editioned series which have greater reach, the works offer a close relationship between the viewer and the artwork, and their abstract nature permits an ambiguity which emphasises subjective experience and interpretation. Hirst's Veils foreground the importance of colour and intricate detail in the ability to create an immersive piece of art, one which he hoped would make the viewer, above all else, 'want to stay in the painting'.
