We are grateful to Dr. Natalie Gutgesell for the scholarly advice. Painted in Paris in 1888, the present lot belongs to the most dynamic and internationally shaped phase of Dora Hitz’s career. Few artists of her generation embodied such a distinctly cosmopolitan trajectory: trained in Munich, established early on in Romania as court painter to Elisabeth of Romania, and subsequently active in Paris, London and Berlin, Hitz moved with remarkable ease across Europe’s artistic centres. Her Parisian years (c. 1882–1890), spent in the Villa des Arts in Montmartre, proved decisive. Immersed in an international milieu, she engaged directly with the artistic currents of her time, encountering figures such as Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne, while finding a lasting mentor in Eugène Carrière. Under these influences, her painting adopted a lighter palette and a more fluid, animated brushwork aligned with contemporary developments in French painting. Unlike many of her female contemporaries, Hitz benefited from the comparatively progressive conditions in Paris, where private academies enabled women to study from the live model—an opportunity largely inaccessible elsewhere. Her international presence was reinforced through regular participation in major exhibitions, including in Paris and later London, where she exhibited at the Royal Academy and absorbed impulses from the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1898, she became a founding member of the Berlin Secession, firmly positioning herself within the progressive networks of the German art world. Hitz’s career is thus defined not only by stylistic versatility, but by an exceptional degree of mobility, connectivity and ambition. A deeply networked European artist, she navigated courtly patronage, avant-garde circles and institutional frameworks with equal confidence, while simultaneously advocating for women’s artistic education. The present work stands as a compelling document of this outward-looking, international identity that shaped both her art and her legacy.

Waldstück Pastell auf gräulichem Velin. Um 1900. 45,5 x 53 cm. Unten rechts mit Kreide in Rot signiert "Dora Hitz". Frühlingshaft flirrendes Licht und frisches Grün erfüllen die baumbestandene Wiese. Souverän erfasst die Künstlerin das Spiel von Licht und Schatten im Grün der Bäume und akzentuiert nur hier und da Äste und Stämme mit dunklen Konturen. Sie "vertrat in Deutschland als eine der ersten den reifen Impressionismus mit durchgeistigtem Vortrag und blonder, farbenfreudiger, leuchtender Palette." (Thieme-Becker S. 153). Bereits als Mädchen, mit 13 Jahren, studierte Dora Hitz an der Münchner "Damenmalschule Frau Staatsrat Weber" und wurde anschließend in Bukarest rumänische Hofkünstlerin der Königin Elisabeth von Rumänien, Carmen Sylva. Ab 1880 lebte Hitz in Paris, im Künstlerviertel Montmartre, und studierte u.a. bei Luc-Olivier Merson, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant und Eugène Carrière. 1892 siedelte sie nach Berlin über, betrieb bald eine eigene Damenmalschule und besaß ein Atelier am Lützowplatz. Provenienz: seit zwei Generationen in deutschem Privatbesitz. Die vom Symbolismus und Impressionismus stark beeinflusste Künstlerin Dora Hitz widmete sich in ihrem Oeuvre vielfach der Darstellung von Frauen, Kindern und Müttern. Zentrales Thema des angebotenen Werks ist auch hier die Freude der Mutterschaft, die sich in den rührenden und liebevollen Gesten von Mutter und Kleinkind ausdrückt. Sowohl die Datierung als auch der rückseitige Leinwandstempel lassen vermuten, dass das Werk während ihres Studiums in Paris entstand.

Pavillon im Frühling Aquarell, mit Deckweiß gehöht, Bleistift und Feder in Schwarz auf Velin. 38,3 x 47,2 cm. Unten rechts mit Feder in Braun signiert "Dora Hitz". Frisches Grün und ein frühlingshaft flirrendes Licht umgeben den Pavillon, in dem eine nicht näher definierte Figur steht. Souverän aquarelliert die Künstlerin das Spiel von Licht und Schatten im Grün der Bäume und akzentuiert die Farben hier und da mit sicheren Bleistift- und Federkonturen. "H. vertrat in Deutschland als eine der ersten den reifen Impressionismus mit durchgeistigtem Vortrag und blonder, farbenfreudiger, leuchtender Palette." (Thieme-Becker S. 153). Anschließend war sie in Bukarest als rumänische Hofkünstlerin der Königin Elisabeth von Rumänien, Carmen Sylva, tätig. Ab 1880 lebte Dora Hitz in Paris, im Künstlerviertel Montmartre, und studierte u.a. bei Luc-Olivier Merson, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant und Eugène Carrière. 1892 siedelte sie nach Berlin über, trat dem Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen bei und erhielt bedeutende Portraitaufträge aus großbürgerlichen Kreisen. Seit 1894 betrieb sie eine eigene Damenmalschule und besaß ein Atelier am Lützowplatz.
