Through an apparently austere composition, articulated by means of chromatic planes and precisely structured forms, Hlito develops a visual reflection on balance, spatial tension and the rational construction of the image. The painting reveals, at the same time, the artist's ability to transcend the rigidity of pure geometry and endow it with a poetic and contemplative dimension. The composition of Efigie is organized vertically around a large dark blue form that dominates the pictorial space and over which unfolds a sequence of light angular planes, almost like folded fragments or suspended structures, which was a common recourse in his painting. The warm background, constructed by means of orange tones and luminous earths, generates a strong chromatic contrast with the blue surfaces and reinforces the visual depth of the work. This dialogue between warm and cold colors not only organizes the compositional space, but also produces an atmospheric tension that transforms geometry into a sensitive experience. The painting must be contextualized within the evolution of Argentine abstraction in the mid-twentieth century, particularly in relation to the Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención, of which Hlito was a co-founding member in 1945. This movement emerged as a radical break with the figurative tradition and defended the absolute autonomy of the work of art. Influenced by the European avant-garde, especially constructivism, neoplasticism and Bauhaus theories, Argentine concrete artists proposed an art based on geometry, rationality and the mathematical organization of space. However, Alfredo Hlito developed a singular position within this context. Although he shared the principles of concrete abstraction, his work was progressively distinguished by a more open and lyrical sensibility. The influence of Joaquín Torres García was fundamental in this orientation. From the Uruguayan master he inherited not only an interest in geometric structure, but also the idea that the plastic order could contain a spiritual and symbolic dimension. Trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, he participated from a very young age in the debates on the renewal of modern art in Argentina. Along with figures such as Tomás Maldonado, he promoted a conception of art based on abstraction and visual experimentation. The signing of the Inventionist Manifesto in 1946 marked a decisive moment in the consolidation of this new artistic sensibility, which aspired to break definitively with traditional illusionism. His research on color, compositional rhythm and spatial structure led him to move away from the initial severity of orthodox concretism to explore more atmospheric and sensitive solutions. This evolution was accentuated during his stay in Mexico between 1964 and 1973, a period in which his painting acquired greater chromatic freedom and a more flexible relationship with the pictorial space. Efigie, produced shortly after his return, reflects precisely this stage of maturity in which geometry becomes more fluid and evocative.
