FH0379, The Complete Frances Hodgkins: https://completefranceshodgkins.com/explore ESSAY When Frances Hodgkins set off for Europe in 1901, she left with the intention of spending a couple of years gaining overseas experience before returning once more to Aotearoa New Zealand to teach. Having come from a childhood immersion in the Otago landscape, cities such as London and Paris seemed overwhelming, too crowded, and too expensive. Instead, it was the fishing villages of Cornwall and Brittany, with their picturesque architecture and traditions, that initially captured Hodgkins’ imagination. She spent the summer of 1901 in Caudebec-en-Caux, Normandy, in the company of Irish artist Norman Garstin and his retinue of pupils, although Garstin, having seen her work, said there was nothing he could teach her. She enjoyed the company of other artists – not least the daily criticism (carried out with good humour) where they discussed the travails and successes of the day. Hodgkins returned the following year to Dinan in Brittany, where Garstin had taken up residence for his summer school. She stayed throughout the summer, taking rooms above the famous Swiss-run Patisserie Taffatz, the advertisements for which boasted the best of English teas. She described to fellow artist Dorothy Kate Richmond how she liked to be painting out of doors by 7.30am, as the streets were ‘just as busy then, in fact busier than later in the day. Dinan is a first-rate place – a variety of everything – old streets, peasant women, fruit stalls, river scenery, feudal castles & 2 ‘dashing’ cavalry regiments…’1 The summer was plagued by constant rain, and Hodgkins was grateful for the shelter of the arcades that allowed her to overlook the local market and the comings and goings of the old medieval town. Old Street, Dinan, 1902 is an excellent example of Hodgkins’ practice at this time. The convergence of several cobbled streets that meandered through the haute ville provides an appropriate vanishing point, drawing the eye before the viewer settles on the activities taking place either side. The centre background is dominated by a dark, four storeyed building, standing in contrast to the pale awning of the shop on the left. A woman wearing a traditional Breton cap attends to something on a table beneath it, the white of her bonnet serving as a visual counterpoint to her sombre gown and the brown shutters behind. Another shop is shaded by a red and white canvas awning, a detail that found their way into several of her watercolours of the time, the bold lines adding a dash of pattern and warmth to the blocks of colour either side. A cluster of women emerge from the street beyond, while others stand further back, hastily sketched. Others gaze at what might be a vegetable stall on the right. Unlike much of Hodgkins’ work, only the man in white, his body tilted to balance the large basket on his arm, is in clear focus – captured before he turns the corner and moves out of sight. Across the expanse of street that opens out in front of the artist, a donkey patiently waits between the shafts of a blue wooden cart, but such is the rapidity of Hodgkins’ brushstrokes that we cannot tell if a figure is loading it or not. This motif of donkey and cart appears in a number of the artist’s French watercolours, including Rue de l’horloge, 1902 which was painted the same summer. A common form of transport, they allowed Hodgkins to deftly capture the circular structure of the wheels. Many of her Dinan watercolours focused on the streets adjacent to her lodgings. One has to focus closely to make out the gas lamp attached to the building on the corner, allowing us to imagine the same streets in the evening, softly illuminated in their glow. 1. Hodgkin invariably preferred painting in watercolour and the white surface of the paper adds a sense of freedom and luminosity to the elegant gathering of ladies amidst whom a child is incongruously enjoying a swing, a somewhat arbitrary juxtaposition of compositional elements typical of the artist. Hodgkins first left her home town of Dunedin in New Zealand for Europe in 1901, moving between England and France and visiting Spain, Moroco, Italy and the Netherlands. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in London becoming the first New Zealander to have her work shown 'on the line'. In Paris she taught at the Academie Colarossi, the first woman appointed to a teaching position there, and founded a school for watercolours in Concarneau, Brittany. With the outbreak of the First World War she moved to St Ives in Cornwall where she worked with Cedric Morris and others in his circle of friends including John Piper. After the Armistice Hodgkins began showing with the London Group and in 1929 joined the Seven and Five Society, becoming a key figure in the development of British Modernism between the Wars.

We are grateful to Mary Kisler for her assistance with cataloguing this lot. Footnote: Although she is today considered one of New Zealand’s most distinguished modern artists, it was during her time in Western Europe, particularly in Britain, that Frances Hodgkins developed her distinctive style and palette - deviating from the pervasive influence of Impressionism towards the Modernist style that she would ultimately be recognised for. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1869 to English emigre, William Mathew Hodgkins, a solicitor, barrister and part-time painter and his Australian wife, Rachel Owen, Hodgkins enjoyed a rich childhood, both materially and culturally. Encouraged by their father, a dedicated votary of watercolour painting and a founding member of the Otago Society of Artists and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Frances and her elder sister, Isabel, spent their formative years sketching and painting the New Zealand landscape. Although it is generally accepted that Isabel’s artistic talents, particularly in landscape painting, were more apparent in these early years, Frances’ career would ultimately outpace that of her sister’s. In 1893, following her inaugural exhibition three years prior, Hodgkins began studying under Italian artist, Girolamo Nerli. Whilst the early tutelage provided by her father equipped Hodgkins with her fundamental techniques, her relationship with Nerli undoubtedly changed the trajectory of her career. Under Nerli, Hodgkins’ style evolved, demonstrating a boldness of form and colour previously unseen in her work. In 1901, after studying, and briefly teaching, at the Dunedin School of Art, Hodgkins left New Zealand for Europe. Over the intervening 12 years, Hodgkins travelled extensively, oscillating between continents and imbibing inspiration from every place she visited - in her own words: “I wanted to see the masterpieces of all time; learn what was being done in my chosen medium and measure myself against the moderns”. Although this period in her career does not reflect the full maturation of her style, Hodgkins was nonetheless beginning to receive critical acclaim, winning numerous prizes and having her work exhibited by several eminent institutions, notably, in Paris, the Salon and the Société Internationale d'Aquarellistes. In 1908, Hodgkins settled in Paris, where she became the first woman to be appointed as instructor at the Académie Colarossi and established her own school for watercolour painting. Although this was a professionally fertile time for Hodgkins, the outbreak of the First World War forced her to flee Paris and settle in St Ives, Cornwall. Despite this being a period of great financial hardship for Hodgkins, it was also a time of immense creative freedom and experimentation. In St Ives, Hodgkins was quickly accepted into the artistic circle and soon found herself associated with artists including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland and John and Myfanwy Piper. It was also around this time that Hodgkins, encouraged by her close friends, Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, began experimenting in oils and developing her distinctive Modernist style. After living and working in Cornwall for eight years, Hodgkins spent several years living between Manchester, Paris and Cornwall, before moving to London in 1927 where she swiftly gained the admiration of influential London dealer, Arthur Howell of St George’s Gallery in Hanover Square. The partnership between Hodgkins and Howell precipitated a longstanding relationship with the Lefevre and Leicester Galleries, which would last until her death in 1947. Although Hodgkins was recognised as an exceptionally gifted artist during her lifetime, as a member of the avant-garde, she remained on the peripheries of the commercial art world and, resultingly, achieved very little financial success. Today, however, Hodgkins’ work is prized by collectors and institutions across the globe. Traversing between styles, hemispheres and disciplines, Hodgkins’ remarkable oeuvre is demonstrative of her fearless spirit and is characterised by her daring palette and bold, simplified forms.

After a training in her native country, she joined Europe in 1901 in London. Travelling artist, Frances Hodgkins travels through Europe and participates in various training courses throughout the old continent. In 1903, she became the first New Zealand artist to be exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1907, she had her first solo exhibition in London. In 1910, she moved to Paris and taught at the Colarossi Academy. From the 1920s onwards her style became more modernist, she introduced abstract and simplified forms into her work. Frances Mary Hodgkins (New Zealand/British, 1869-1947) Still life with a vase of flowers and eggs signed 'Frances Hodgkins' (lower right) watercolour h:49.50 w:39.50 cm Other Notes: It has been suggested that this work dates to 1931 when Hodgkins was in St Tropez and painted a large number of very similar still lifes and landscapes. The inclusion of eggs and a cork tree in the background were much favoured motifs by Hodgkins during this period. FRANCES HODGKINS Arrangement of Jugs original lithograph on cream paper; published by Contemporary Lithographs Ltd., London, 1938 signed 503mm x 652mm NOTE This original lithograph by Frances Hodgkins was drawn at the Curwen Studios in April 1938 and is signed by the artist in pencil. Only a few of the impressions were signed and although the planned edition size was around 300, only about half were completed du to the outbreak of World War Two. This lithograph was commissioned in 1937 by John Piper and Robert Wellington for their series 'Contemporary Lithographs'. John Piper wrote to Hodgkins in May of 1938 that he considered this work to be 'the best in the series. It makes most of the others look tame and school-girlish'.

Charles Rutherston [aka Rothenstein] was the older brother of the artist William Rothenstein (1872-1945) and Albert Rutherston (1881-1953). A successful businessman in the textile industry who had the eye and financial ability to collect and support the arts. He played a key role in the careers of Gwen and Augustus John, Paul Nash, Wyndham Lewis and Henry Moore. Throughout his life he donated selected works to national collections, including The Tate, before deciding in 1925 to leave the entirety of his collection to the City of Manchester Gallery. *Biography. Frances Mary Hodgkins [1869-1945], a painter in oils and watercolours of landscapes, figures and still life. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, trained largely by her father William Matthew Hodgkins. Studied at Dunedin Art School under the Italian, Girolamo Nerli. In 1901 she travelled to Europe and Morocco. Settling in Paris in 1908 she taught art in her own school. She returned to New Zealand in 1904-1906 and 1912-1913. She settled in St. Ives from 1914. After the war she travelled again in Europe. She held her first one man show in London in 1928. Frances joined the Seven and Five Society in 1929, and worked alongside Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. During the 1930s she exhibited regularly at the Leferve Galleries. From 1932 to 1947 she lived at Dorchester. Frances Hodgkins is most admired for the freely painted works of her later life. She is considered a lyrical colourist and an artistic descendant of Henry Matisse
