John Hodson, British, late 19th century- Hampstead Heath; oil on canvas, signed and inscribed 'HAMPSTED [sic] EAST END JOHN HODSON' on the lower horizontal stretcher bar, and dated 'AUGUST 1881' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 31 x 46 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is presumably by the J. Hodson listed in J. Johnson and A. Greutzner, 'The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940', p.252, as having exhibited in 1883 and residing at 49 Park Road in Hampstead. The charming scene depicts a summer's day on Hampstead Heath, the wild terrain almost unoccupied apart from two girls collecting wildflowers in the lower right corner, almost indistinguishable from the landscape around them.
