At the height of his artistic production during the interwar period, within the context of the New Objectivity, the works of Karl Hofer are marked by a striking sobriety, characterized by isolated figures, quiet atmospheres, and a subtle psychological depth. A typical example of this is the painting "Mädchen und Katze" (Girl and Cat). The scene appears calm and composed, almost timeless, while at the same time imbued with a quiet inner presence. The luminous yellow of the dress provides a warm, vibrant accent. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines künstlerischen Schaffens in der Zwischenkriegszeit, im Umfeld der Neuen Sachlichkeit, zeichnen sich die Werke von Karl Hofer durch grosse Nüchternheit aus, geprägt von isolierten Figuren, stillen Atmosphären und einer feinen psychologischen Tiefe. Ein typisches Beispiel hierfür ist das Gemälde "Mädchen mit Katze". Die Szene wirkt ruhig und gesammelt, beinahe zeitlos, und ist zugleich von einer leisen inneren Präsenz erfüllt. Das leuchtende Gelb des Kleides setzt dabei einen warmen, lebendigen Akzent. Nach Studien in Karlsruhe und Paris entwickelte Hofer seit den 1910er Jahren eine eigenständige Position innerhalb der deutschen Moderne. Als langjähriger Professor und später Direktor der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin prägte er die figurative Malerei in Deutschland nachhaltig. His work cannot be clearly classified as either Expressionism or New Objectivity. His painting is characterised by clearly structured compositions, a nuanced use of colour, and a lyrical, melancholic expression. After studying under Hans Thoma and Leopold von Kalckreuth in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, Hofer spent the period from 1903 to 1908 in Rome. His first exhibitions followed in Weimar and at the ‘Neue Künstlervereinigung München’. He subsequently lived in Paris before a journey to India took him there around 1911. During the First World War, Hofer was interned as a civilian in France and later lived in Switzerland. In the 1920s, he was one of the leading artists of the Weimar Republic and became a professor at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Ostracised by the Nazi regime as a ‘degenerate artist’ and banned from working and exhibiting, Hofer was rehabilitated after 1945 and, as director of the Academy of Fine Arts and president of the German Artists’ Association, shaped cultural life in the post-war period. The painting on offer is connected to Hofer’s trip to India around 1911. It depicts a young boy sitting in the shade of dense, swaying foliage. The figure appears introverted; his downcast gaze and calm demeanour lend him a quiet, contemplative air. Broad, lively brushstrokes shape the surrounding vegetation and create a dense atmosphere. The colour scheme, comprising deep greens, yellows and warm reds, shapes the figure and lends the scene a warm, almost shimmering intensity. Scratched monogram and date 'CH 46' (joined) lower left in the wet paint. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Karl Hofer artistically explored the motifs of masked figures, clowns and the world of the circus. Particularly in the period between 1925 and 1935, Hofer created numerous variations on the theme of Carnival – above all, his famous “Selbstbildnis mit Dämonen” of 1928 and his 1934 painting “Böse Masken”, which is surely to be interpreted as an allusion to the escalating political situation in Germany. Regarding these works, Katharina Henkel writes: “the cast of characters in Hofer’s pictures serve as an allegory of the alienated individuals who either discover their true self outside of bourgeois society or conceal their authentic self beneath a mask. As in the case of Beckmann’s images of performers, Harlequin and the clown served Hofer as a means to […] disclose his reaction to economic and social contradictions” (cited in Karl Hofer, exh. cat. Kunsthalle Emden 2012, p. 64). Immediately after the end of the Second World War, Hofer returned back to the theme of the mask and created “Junge mit Maske”, the painting which is up for auction here. Positioned directly opposite the viewer, a young man is removing a pink mask with a distinctive nose from his face – perhaps in order to cast aside the period of the war and its deprivations and to gaze, with a mixture of scepticism and hope, towards a period defined by peace and freedom. For this image of a young man, Hofer has selected an unusual combination of colours consisting of reds, browns and yellows contrasted with a lurid tone of pink. The mask’s colour accordingly also makes it a foreign body, something that belongs to the past for Hofer. This compelling image can be grouped with the admonishing horn blowers, drummers and heralds with which Hofer responded to the political and social developments that followed the turmoil of the war.

(1878 Karlsruhe - 1955 Berlin) Zwei Männer auf einer Treppe Um 1945-1947 entstandenes Blatt Hofers, der in jenen Jahren mehrfach Figuren auf Treppen schilderte. Dargestellt ist ein älterer Mann, der in enger Beziehung dicht neben einem jüngeren Mann steht, verbunden durch übereinander gelegte Hände. Außer dem Lebensalter- und Freundschaftsmotiv ist es auch als Vater-Sohn-Beziehung interpretierbar, zugleich als Hommage an das berühmte Gemälde "Bauhaustreppe" von Oskar Schlemmer aus dem Jahr 1932. Schlemmer war 1933 zusammen mit Hofer als Lehrer an den Vereinigten Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin entlassen worden. Im "Dritten Reich" wurden Hofers Werke als "entartet" verfemt, er selbst wurde 1938 aus der Akademie der Künste ausgeschlossen. Nach dem Kriegsende übernahm Hofer 1945 das Direktorat an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. Originaltitel Die vorliegende Ansicht aus dem Tessin zeichnet sich durch Hofers klare Formensprache und ruhige Bildstruktur aus, wobei die Farbvaleurs fein abgestuft sind und eine breite Tonalität abbilden. Mit flott geführtem Pinsel und flächigem Farbauftrag ausgeführte Malerei im Stil der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Im Jahr der Entstehung des kleinen Gemäldes, 1931, kaufte Hofer ein Haus am, von hohen Bergen umgebenen, Luganer See bei Torraza di Caslano. Hier entstand über mehrere Jahre eine Serie von Dorfansichten mit den in der Region typisch schlichten Fassaden und kubischen Architekturformen, oft mit hoch aufragenden Bergmassiven, die bei Hofer nur in violetten Farbflächen konturiert sind. Hofer schrieb dazu: "Es entstanden meine zahlreichen Tessiner Landschaften, in denen ich in immer neuen Varianten versuchte, unter dem Gewand objektiver Darstellung die geheime Geometrie dieser Symbiose von Haus und Umwelt deutlich werden zu lassen." Monogrammed 'CH' (scratched) on the right hand side. Female nudes, revelries, landscapes from Ticino and, not least, still lifes of fruit and flowers were the preferred motifs of Karl Hofer. Like so many painters of his generation, he repeatedly returned to pictorial compositions once he had found them, creating variations on them for decades. This practice is also exemplified by the 1938 still life “Birnen” offered for sale here. Having thematised autumn fruits for the first time in 1920, Hofer repeatedly went back to these motifs over the course of the 1930s and also painted them in his late work around 1950. In our painting they lie in a rust-red clay bowl. Establishing a vigorous contrast, Hofer has placed a crumpled white bag beside the ceramic vessel. Green, yellow, red and a dark violet form a muted harmony of colours whose subtle nuances stand out alongside the white. The clear use of line and the cohesive composition provide plain indications of Hofer’s intense engagement with the work of Paul Cézanne. This excellently preserved fruit still life is from the collection of the Winterthur-based Reinhart family, who provided Hofer with decisive support at the beginning of his career and purchased his works on a grand scale.

CARL HOFER (Karlsruhe 1878–1955 Berlin) Carl Hofer depicts the Swiss sculptor Hermann Hubacher in a nearly full-length portrait, in which his figure fills the frame. Dressed in an elegant suit with a waistcoat, bow tie, and conspicuous watch chain, he stands out against the monochrome, abstract background, which trains our attention entirely on the individual, with nothing to distract the eye. His right hand casually concealed in his pocket, a cigarette in his left, his face entirely authentic, he gazes at us confidently, with an almost formal quiet and thoughtfulness. The work radiates a timeless grandeur and reflects Hofer's interest in the inner life of his subjects. A common milieu for these two artists is the Reinhart family, Winterthur industrialists and art patrons, whose homes both frequented. The portrait was originally in the possession of the Reinharts before it was given to Hubacher. Formatfüllend und beinahe in voller Körpergrösse gibt Carl Hofer den Schweizer Bildhauer Hermann Hubacher wieder. In einem eleganten Anzug mit Weste, Fliege und sichtbarer Uhrkette hebt er sich von dem monochromen, abstrakten Hintergrund ab, der dazu beiträgt, dass sich die Aufmerksamkeit ganz auf die Person konzentriert und der Blick durch nichts abgelenkt wird. Die rechte Hand lässig in der Tasche versteckt, in der Linken eine Zigarre, das Gesicht unverstellt, blickt er uns selbstbewusst, mit einer fast feierlichen Ruhe und Nachdenklichkeit an. Das Werk strahlt eine zeitlose Würde aus und spiegelt Hofers Interesse an der inneren Welt seiner Porträtierten wider. Gemeinsamer Drehpunkt zwischen den beiden Künstlern ist die Winterthurer Industriellen- und Kunstmäzenenfamilie Reinhart, in deren Häusern beide verkehrten. Das Bildnis war denn auch ursprünglich im Besitz der Reinharts, bevor es Hubacher geschenkt wurde. Umgekehrt beauftragte Georg Reinhart Hubacher 1918, eine Büste von Hofer anzufertigen, die noch heute im Besitz des Kunstmuseums Winterthur ist.
