Verso: annotated ‘No 8’. Verso of the frame: label of ‘Kunsthandel Hijmans, Soerabaia’ and annotated ‘No 8’.Provenance: - Acquired by the uncle of the present owner in the Dutch East Indies, shortly before the start of World War II, circa 1939*; - Thence by descent to the present owner’s father and to the present owner, The Netherlands. * Possibly acquired during the travelling exhibition: ‘Europeesche Schilders op Bali’, which ran from September-December 1939. At the exhibition in Surabaya (1-15 December 1939), Hofker allegedly exhibited ‘a dozen very well executed drawings’ (Indische Courant, 2 December 1939, p. 13). Considering the label of ‘Kunsthandel Hijmans, Soerabaia’ and the annotation ‘No. 8’ verso, the current drawing was possibly exhibited and acquired during this travelling exhibition.
