    (1821 Berlin - 1870 ebenda) Umbau der Pont Neuf in Paris Äußerst atmosphärisch und effektvoll inszenierte, seltene Parisvedute, die die Sanierungsarbeiten an der Pont Neuf in Paris schildert. Die Pont Neuf, die älteste, heute noch erhaltene Brücke der französischen Weltmetropole, wurde ursprünglich im späten 16./frühen 17. Jh. erbaut. Mitte des 19. Jhs. allerdings litt sie unter fundamentalen, statischen Problemen, weshalb unter der Herrschaft Napoleons III. weitreichende Modernisierungsmaßnahmen durchgeführt wurden. Das vorliegende Gemälde stellt ein seltenes, historisch bedeutendes Zeitzeugnis dieser Rekonstruktion dar, die zwischen 1848 und 1855 stattfand und ein faszinierendes Symbol für den Aufbruch in die Moderne und den technologischen Fortschritt, geprägt von harter menschlicher Arbeit, im ausgehenden 19. Jh. war, was Hoguet beeindruckend zu inszenieren verstand. Mächtige, tiefstehende Wolken hüllen die Silhouette der Großstadt ein, einige Sonnenstrahlen haben sich bereits ihren Weg durch den dichten Dunst gebahnt und erhellen das Geschehen schlaglichtartig. Diese beeindruckende Chiascurotechnik evoziert eine herausragende, theatralische Stimmung, während im Vordergrund reges Treiben herrscht: Neben zahlreichen Stapeln aus Steinblöcken und Holzlatten, entladen Arbeiter die Lastkähne und tragen das Baumaterial zur Baustelle, wo es weiterverarbeitet wird. Die realistische Schilderung der harten Arbeit steht in gekonnt inszeniertem Kontrast zur verklärten, melancholisch konnotierten Stimmung der Szenerie, was die herausragende Meisterschaft zeigt, mit der es Hoguet verstand Realismus mit herausragendem Stimmungsgehalt zu paaren, was nicht zuletzt den Einfluss seines Lehrers Eugéne Isabeys dokumentiert. Als Sohn französischer Einwanderer in Berlin aufgewachsen, lernte Hoguet zunächst bei dem dort ansässigen Marinemaler Wilhelm Krause und setzte sein Studium anschließend in Paris bei Eugène Ciceri und danach im Atelier von Eugène Isabey fort, dessen Gespür für theatralische Wetterstimmungen, tosende Wolkenformationen und bewegtes Licht einen enormen Einfluss auf Hoguets Oeuvre hatte. Rasch entwickelte der Künstler so eine ausgezeichnete Technik und großes künstlerisches Können. Während er in Paris regelmäßig die Salonausstellungen beschickte, hielt er sich auch immer wieder für längere Zeit in England auf und bereiste besonders in den 1840er Jahren neben Frankreich und England auch Holland, Belgien und die Schweiz. 1848 kehrte er schließlich nach Berlin zurück, wo er in den kommenden Jahren äußerst produktiv war und eine große Menge an Landschaften, Marinebildern, aber auch Stillleben fertigte. Von Studienreisen nach u.a. Helgoland, in den Harz und die Schweiz sowie nach Schottland brachte er eine Vielzahl an Skizzen und Zeichnungen mit, die er winters in seinem Atelier in groß angelegten Gemälden mit pastosem Farbauftrag und effektvollen Hell-Dunkel-Kontrasten oder in subtil ausgearbeiteten Aquarellen umsetzte. Auf seinen Reisen nach Nordfrankreich kam er mit der Schule von Barbizon in Kontakt, wovon sein freier Pinselstrich und sein helles, gelegentlich mit kräftigen Farben akzentuiertes Kolorit zeugten. In Berlin beteiligte er sich nun auch rege am akademischen Ausstellungsgeschehen und wurde 1869 an der dortigen Akademie aufgenommen. Öl/Holztafel.     BAUMFÄLLEN IN EINEM WALDSTÜCK Öl auf Leinwand. 86 x 59 cm. Links unten signiert und datiert „1854“. Das betont hohe Format nutzte der Maler, um den aufragenden Baum im Bildzentrum besonders zur Geltung zu bringen, wodurch zusammen mit der Wolkenbildung Lebendigkeit im Bild entsteht. Am Waldboden der Stamm des gefällten Baumes, an dem ein Arbeiter die Kerbe durchsägt. Links hinten wird Kleinholz verbrannt, rechts die im Schatten stehende Dorfkirche. Der Maler entstammt einer Pariser Hugenottenfamilie, studierte in Berlin, ging jedoch nach Paris in die Ausbildung bei Eugène Isabey (1804 – 1886). Nach seinen Reisen kehrte er nach Berlin zurück und schuf ein bedeutsames Werk, das sich zwischen Romantik und Realismus einordnet, mit idyllischen Landschaften ebenso wie Darstellungen zeitgenössischer Arbeitsschilderungen.
