Ludwig Hohlwein, Herrsching / Keramische Werkstatten vintage poster

    Est: $1,800 - $2,200

Ludwig Hohlwein Herrsching / Keramische Werkstatten vintage poster 1910 44.75 h x 31.5 w in (114 x 80 cm) A ceramic artists' cooperative advertises its retail outlet in Munich in this rarely seen design by Hohlwein, a beautifully executed object poster with a slight industrial twist. Hohlwein's "special way of applying colors, letting them dry at different times, and printing one on top of the other, producing modulations of shading, has often been copied, but never equaled. He belonged to no school or group, his art and personality are an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of German poster art" (Rademacher, p. 22). May. 21, 2026

Ludwig Hohlwein, Münchener Renn = Verein. E.V. 1910.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Münchener Renn = Verein. E.V. 1910. Condition B+ / A-: minor repaired tears at edges; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Horseback riding was one of Hohlwein's passions. Amongst his earliest and most successful poster commissions were images for the Hermann Scherrer store (one featuring a woman on a horse, the other a man with a saddle), and the subject of his first portfolio was horse racing ( Turf, 1909): "All who know men and horses have a high regard for Hohlwein's rendering of them. It is this peculiar combination of realism and advertising power that gives these posters their remarkable distinction" (Frenzel p. 40). It was on the basis of this equine affection that the year following Turf he was asked to advertise the Munich races. He depicts three galloping horses charging towards the viewer as brown masses against a patterned green background, with the white of the rider's breeches bringing light into the image. The dynamic composition is augmented by the brush-stroke style technique that Hohlwein was known for. DFP-III 1367, Hohlwein / Stuttgart 42, Hohlwein / Munich p. 134.

  • Ludwig Hohlwein, Grammophon. 1910.
    May. 21, 2026

    Ludwig Hohlwein, Grammophon. 1910.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Grammophon. 1910. Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins; replaced punch holes at top margin, possibly for hanging. Matted and framed. The relaxed pose of this woman on a couch evokes a popular graphic meme that appears in earlier artwork and several earlier posters; most prominently it derives from Ramon Casas' 1899 painting Decadent Young Woman, which, in the same color scheme, depicts a young woman reclining with her magazine. Casas used this imagery again in a poster that same year for Pel & Ploma (1899). This tableaux of women languidly reading or resting with their literature was so popular it also appeared in a poster by Kolomon Moser, Lesen Sie (1900) and Thomas Heine's Weite Welte (1901). With direct visual cues to these earlier words, Hohlwein's poster replaces the book with a much newer technology, a Gramophone, diverting the woman's attention to her music player. In the 1890s, Emile Berliner initiated the transition from Edison's phonograph cylinders to flat discs, coining the term "gramophone" for disc record players. Upon close inspection of the player, one can see the small carving of Nipper the Dog - the logo of "His Master's Voice" Gramophone Company beginning in 1909. Undoubtedly, the sleeping terrier in the poster represents the mascot's real-life counterpart. During this era, the transition of musical entertainment to something that could be enjoyed at home was inextricably tied to women's realm in the household, giving them an education that wasn't accessible to most before. In turn, they also became the primary target of advertising, since they were now the designated buyers of this product as well. Rare. We have only been able to locate 4 other copies at auction in the last 20 years. DFP-III 1376, Hohlwein 1376, Hohlwein / Stuttgart 37.

  • Ludwig Hohlwein, Confection Kehl PKZ. 1908.
    May. 21, 2026

Ludwig Hohlwein, Confection Kehl PKZ. 1908.

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Confection Kehl PKZ. 1908. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, one into lower left image; minor creases in image. This was the very first poster issued by the esteemed men's clothing store PKZ, and the first of three posters Hohlwein designed for the Swiss company. He most likely received these commissions as a result of some of his earliest posters that promoted sport clothing sold by Munich's Hermann Scherrer. PKZ was founded in Zurich by Paul Kehl in 1881, the initials stand for Paul Kehl Zurich. In his earlier posters for purveyors of clothing, Hohlwein "presents vignettes of everyday life and text in a direct manner. In another respect, however, he utilized pattern to great effect in these works, imposing broad areas of flat pinstripe or square grid to define the dapper clothes of his models. At the same time, certain elements are rendered three-dimensionally by means of shadows and highlights, creating a tension between flatness and depth. The imposition of pattern to emphasize a flat picture plane closely parallels developments in painting, such as the work of Edouard Vuillard. But the painterly touch of the artist has here been replaced by a crisp, mechanical image" (Modern Poster, p. 18). Hohlwein's "elegant silhouetted figures were well adapted to the clothing advertisements that formed a major part of his pre war output" (Avant Garde p. 31). Plakat Schweiz p. 135, Modern Poster 58, Avant Garde p. 115, Gallo p. 136, Word & Image p. 43, Swiss Art Nouveau p. 90, Art Nouveau p. 234.

    May. 21, 2026

    Ludwig Hohlwein, Stuhr's Caviar. 1909.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Stuhr's Caviar. 1909. Condition B+: replaced losses in top margin and upper left corner; repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; creases and abrasions in margins and image. This early poster by Hohlwein reflects many of the graphic characteristics that reverberated throughout his oeuvre, such as the large planes of solid colors and the figures delineated without outline. The scene is an almost comical image of a portly connoisseur casting a sidelong glance as he chooses from a tray of delectable caviar (including Malossol and Astrakhan). "Hohlwein's creations revolutionized poster concepts and poster art . . [his] unique contribution was not in any one aspect of poster design, but in a bold, unified concept which utilized every element in the poster - line, light, shadow, pattern, color, lettering - to create a single effect" (Metzl p. 73). It is interesting to note Hohlwein's signature on this poster is not his usual lettermark, block signature, but rather written in cursive, which we do not believe was used on any other poster. Similarly, it is one of his only posters that does not contain any of the printer's information. DFP-III 1356.

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Weltausstellung Brüssel. 1910. Condition A-: expert overpainting in margins; unobtrusive vertical fold. When Hohlwein received the official commission to design the poster for Germany's participation in the 1910 Brussels World's Fair, he stuck with a very academic artistic inspiration. The straightforward image of a naked man astride a horse is executed in Hohlwein's singular style with the unexpected additional flourish of the Brussels skyline, laid out across the bottom of the poster. Est: $7,000 - $10,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Universitäts - Tattersall. 1912. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in image; tape-repaired tear at right edge, slightly into image; minor loss at bottom right corner; time-staining in margins. Paper. Designing this poster was certainly a pleasure for Hohlwein; a lover of animals and a passionate rider, he loved to represent horses. This tour-de-force design is an archetype of his virtuosity. Using only two colors and the white of the paper, he presents a saddled horse with a little terrier at his feet. Tattersall's is the most famous British auctioneer of horses, and the name has been liberally used in conjunction with the high end of the equestrian market around the world. Here, it advertises a private firm offering lessons, stables and riding equipment to Munich's upper classes. Hohlwein / Stuttgart 72, DFP-III 1412, Frenzel pl 41. (var).

22). Ludwig Hohlwein. Zoologischer Garten Munchen. 1911.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949 Zoologischer Garten Munchen. 1911. Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image; colors attenuated. Framed. Animals of all kinds were a source of inspiration for Hohlwein and he drew them with an ease and deftness born of respect. Animals feature in many of his posters and he was renowned beyond the poster world for his animal sketches. Thus he was the obvious choice for a commission to design the poster for the opening of the Munich Zoo in 1911. Employing magical strokes of color, he depicts a pair of eagles (the German national emblem) against a green background. The poster exists in two versions, the first was produced to announce the opening of the zoo on August 1, 1911 at 1:00 pm (many other sources incorrectly date the poster to 1912). This is the 2nd version, which has more text, explaining entry fees, travel directions and the times of concerts. DFP-III 1407, Hohlwein / Stuttgart 67, Hohlwein 180, Wember 420.

It's a clever portrayal. They're pictured as if setting up for a family photograph, with the two children looking in any direction but at the photographer: it's candid, awkward, and charming.
