Biography

Katsushika Hokusai prints convey a sense of timelessness and the power of nature. Virtually everyone recognizes the Katsushika Hokusai wave painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This piece is part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which he created during the 1830s. Katsushika Hokusai artwork includes other sets of nature prints, including Unusual Views of Celebrated Bridges in the Provinces, A Tour of the Waterfalls of the Provinces, and Oceans of Wisdom.

In addition to his nature prints, Katsushika Hokusai produced brush paintings and book illustrations. In 1814, he created the popular book of drawings Hokusai Manga as a workbook for aspiring artists. He also created erotica (shunga) using the woodblock print technique known as ukiyo-e.
