(sold by the Imperial Royal Authority), Baron Hans Albrecht von Derschau (Lugt 2510), and Oswald stein stamps to verso, and The Creation Robe of an Earle, later reprint QTY: (7) NOTE: Provenance: (Catherine of Aragon) Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), owner of England's first great collection of classical antiquities, famously known as the Arundel Marbles. Heinrich Füssli, the fourth of that name (1755-1829), son of the celebrated painter Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825), distinguished himself more as an art dealer than as an artist. He began as a painter on porcelain, then took part in the publication of the hand-coloured Views of Switzerland issued by Wagner in Bern. In 1779 he went to Paris, where he worked as a drawing master, and returned in 1792. Together with the booksellers Heinrich Füssli & Usteri vom Neuenhof, he founded in Zurich an art business, the first of significance in that city. (Bearded old man with a wart) Paul Davidsohn, born in Danzig, went to Scotland as early as 1858 and became a merchant in London in 1862. His activity as a collector was immense; he attended almost all the major sales of the previous forty years. It was for Dürer, Ostade, and Rembrandt that he made the greatest sacrifices. (Johannes Van Balen) Baron Hans Albrecht von Derschau, a Prussian captain on inactive service, became known through his research on old original woodblocks, from which he had new impressions pulled, published at Gotha between 1808 and 1816. Von Derschau also formed a considerable collection of prints, which he sold to the King of Prussia in 1817. Unsigned and undated (circa 1646), these proofs were possibly intended as illustrations to an unknown work of natural history and were never published (The British Museum, West Indian crown conch, Melongena melongena). ‘The history of this set is unknown, and its raison d'être obscure. Representations of shells at this time are not common, nor were the shells themselves’. ‘It was until recently believed that Rembrandt had copied one of Hollar’s shells - P2195, Conus imperialis’ and ‘there is a tradition that Rembrandt was inspired to etch this, his only still-life etching, from seeing Hollar’s series of shells’ (Pennington, p. 337). Für die Zeit recht außergewöhnlich zeigt uns Wenzel Hollar einen dreiundzwanzigjährigen amerikanischen Indigenen mit tätowiertem Gesicht, teilweise rasiertem Kopf und nacktem Oberkörper, den Blick auf den Betrachter gerichtet; er trägt einen Kopfschmuck aus Tierzähnen und eine Perlen- und Muschelkette. Laut George Hamell handelt es sich hierbei womöglich um einen Jacques genannten Mann aus dem Sprachgebiet der Munsee-Delaware an der Ostküste Nordamerikas, der in der Kolonie Neu Niederlande gefangen und 1644 nach Amsterdam verschifft wurde, wo man ihn als menschliche "Kuriosität" ausstellte. - Ausgezeichneter, feinzeichnender Druck mit feinem Rändchen um die teils zart gratige Plattenkante. Minimale Gebrauchsspuren, schwach angestaubt, sonst tadellos. Die fast komplette Folge vor den Nummern, das Schlussblatt vor der Adresse von de Wit. Ausgezeichnete, teils zart tonige Drucke mit schmalem Rändchen bis breiterem Rand. Etwas angeschmutzt und griffspurig, je geglättete Mittelfalte, Knickspuren, NH 550 mit leichter Bleistiftquadrierung links in der Darstellung, bei NH 853 die Eckenspitzen unten fehlend, die oberen mit Einrisschen, NH 855 mit Stockflecken, NH 859 und 860 mit blassen Wasserflecken in den Ecken, bei ersterem eine Fehlstelle im weißen Rand rechts, Montierungsspuren verso, weitere Gebauchsspuren, sonst in guter Erhaltung. Beigegeben von demselben zwei Blatt aus der verwandten Serie mit Putti und Satyren (NH 934 und 937) sowie die von Pennington als drittes Titelblatt der Serie verzeichnete Radierung mit dem Bildnis Pieter van Avonts (NH 1164).     Excellent impressions of the first state of the portraits of Sir William Butts and his wife Lady Margaret Butts, born Margaret Bacon od Cambridge shire. Sir William Butts (1486 -1545) was a member of King Henry VIII of England's court and was the King's physician. First states before the number added in the right corner. The identity of the male portrait has been questioned in the New Hollstein, suggestion it might be Charles Brandon, the 1st Duke of Suffolk. The drawing by Holbein for the woman's portrait is in the Royal Collection at Windsor.
