Although painting many landscapes and portraits Hondius specialised in animal works, we demonstrate the complexity of animal painting. This work depicting two dogs chasing the geese and ducks, reflects the skill in painting movement of the animals. Hondius is represented in the British Museum, The Victoria Albert Museum, The Met New York, The Rijks Museum Amsterdam and many important private collections.

An impression of the print is held by the Rijksmuseum, Museum no. RP-P-1907-2776, who note that the etching was made after Hondius own design.

Pintor holandés de la Edad de Oro conocido por sus representaciones de animales. Se mudó a Londres en 1666, donde pasó el resto de su vida. Estudió con Cornelis Saftleven, combinó a lo largo de su carrera varias influencias estilísticas y luchó por desarrollar un estilo propio. Preferentemente pintó escenas de caza y de perros. Hondius utilizaba colores vivos en escenas múltiples, dispuestas en distintos planos y sobrecargadas de figuras y demás elementos. Se adjunta estudio de Enrique Valdivieso. Reentelado. 129 x 176 cm.

ABRAHAM HONDIUS (attr. a) (Rotterdam, 1625/1631 - Londra, 1691) Scena di caccia Olio su tavola, cm 47,5X42 Abraham Hondius è documentato a Rotterdam tra il 1651 e il 1659 e i suoi primi dipinti conosciuti risalgono al 1651. Le fonti affermano che è stato allievo di Cornelis Saftleven (1607/08 - 1681) e possibilmente di Pieter de Bloot (1601-1658). Le sue prime scene di caccia e di animali sono chiaramente influenzate da Ludolf de Jongh (1616 - 1679), che era stato anche discepolo di Cornelis Saftleven. Tra il 1659 e il 1664 il pittore fu attivo ad Amsterdam, dove fu influenzato da un altro specialista in scene di caccia, il tedesco Juriaen Jacobsz (1624 - 1685), che si era formato con Frans Snyders ad Anversa. Attributed to Abraham Hondius (Rotterdam, 1625-London, 1691). Hunting scene. Oil on canvas. Enrique Valdivieso's study is attached. It represents a hunting scene where a pack of dogs attack a wild boar, contrasting the dynamism of the episode with the placid landscape. Relined. 129 x 176 cm. He was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker although he spent most of his career in London. He studied with Cornelis Saftleven, with whom his early works are confused. He worked in Rotterdam before moving to Amsterdam in 1659 and in 1666 he settled permanently in London. He preferentially painted and recorded hunting and dog scenes. His engravings of resting and hunting dogs stand out, of which there are examples in the British Museum in London. He also painted (although to a lesser extent) mythological characters, traditional scenes and religious paintings. Hondius used bright colors in multiple scenes, arranged in different planes and overloaded with figures and other elements. He was interested in the horizon and the landscape like his colleagues Philips Wouwerman, Aelbert Cuyp and Paulus Potter.

(Rotterdam, 1625/1631 - Londra, 1691) Due cani che spaventano un airone Firmato sul blocco di marmo in basso a sinistra Olio su tavola, cm 28X32 Provenienza: Forse già New York, Christie's, 10 gennaio 1990, lotto 48 Abraham Hondius è documentato a Rotterdam tra il 1651 e il 1659 e i suoi primi dipinti conosciuti risalgono al 1651. Le fonti affermano che sia stato allievo di Cornelis Saftleven (1607/08 - 1681) e possibilmente di Pieter de Bloot (1601-1658). Le sue prime scene di caccia e di animali sono chiaramente influenzate da Ludolf de Jongh (1616 - 1679), che era stato anche discepolo di Cornelis Saftleven. Tra il 1659 e il 1664 il pittore fu attivo ad Amsterdam, dove fu influenzato da un altro specialista in scene di caccia, il tedesco Juriaen Jacobsz (1624 - 1685), che si era formato con Frans Snyders ad Anversa. Nel 1665 tornì a Rotterdam, dove rimase fino al 1670 per poi trasferirsi a Londra. Bibliografia di riferimento: M. JAGDGESELLSCHAFT BEI DER HIRSCHHATZ Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 115 x 145 cm. Rechts unten signiert „Abraham Hondius“. In vergoldetem reliefverzierten Rahmen. Typische große Jagdszene des Hondius, welcher lange Jahre in Rotterdam arbeitete, bevor er 1671 nach London ging und dort 1691 starb. Von Hondius sind einige ähnliche Gemälde bekannt, welche jedoch variieren. Besonders schön ist hier die frühabendliche Sonne, vor welcher sich die Hauptfiguren, nämlich der berittene Mann rechts des Repoussoirbaumes und die Dame auf dem Schimmel in ihrem gelb-blauen Kleid, abzeichnen. Sowohl das Kleid als auch der mit Federbüschen besetzte Kopfputz des Mannes sind typisch für Hondius und tauchen in seinem Werk von Zeit zu Zeit auf. So etwa auf einem Gemälde, was am 30. Juni 2011 unter Los 285 in unseren Räumen angeboten wurde. Herauszustellen ist hier sicherlich die erhabene Qualität, mit welcher die verschiedenen Figuren und die Tiere, nnämlich ein Wildschwein, ein Hirsch und die vielen Jagdhunde, ineinander verschachtelt miteinander kombiniert sind, aber auch der gute Erhaltungszustand, machen dieses Bild zu einem feinen Sammlungsstück.
