Um 1680. -- Eindrucksvolle Abbildung der Schlacht um Antwerpen mit Kartusche in unterer Ecke, auf der Personen, Orte und Geschehen erklärt sind. Mittig eine blickfangende Explosion, vor der sich nur wenige retten können. Darunter Feldherr Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592), am Boden liegend mit gezücktem Schwert und müdem Blick. Soldaten, Boots- und Brückenteile fliegen durch die Luft, Fluten von Wasser überschwemmen das spanische Heer, Kanonen und Gewehre. Im Hintergrund brennen Schiffe, auf dem hinterem, noch bestehenden Teil der Brücke liegen tote Soldaten. – Schön erhalten.

Engraving on a double page, fold as published, but else in very good contition. Originating from: Henricus Vos, 'Alle de voornaamste historien des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments. Verbeeld in uytsteekende konst - platen', Amsterdam, 1703. Sheet: 30 x 19,5 cm. Note: Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 – 1708) was een Noord-Nederlandse schilder en tekende karikaturen (onder het pseudoniem Marlois), hield zich daarnaast ook bezig als goudsmid, emailleur, boekillustrator en publiceerde landkaarten, vond een manier uit om katoen te bedrukken, was advocaat en schreef historisch-politiek werk. Die universele geest blijkt onder meer uit de uiteenlopende onderwerpen van zijn illustraties: vechtsport, de bijbel, emblemata, verre oorden en tuinontwerpen. Zijn atelier telde 36 assistenten.

La Manière de se bien préparer à la Mort, par des considérations sur la Cène, la Passion & la Mort de Jesus-Christ, avec de très-belles estampes emblématiques, expliquées par Mr. De Chertablon… Anvers : George Gallet, 1700. Exemplaire grand de marges, aux très belles épreuves, dans sa reliure de l’époque. On sait peu de choses sur l’auteur de cet ouvrage, qui est en fait une adaptation du Miroir de la bonne mort du révérend père espagnol David de La Vigne, publié en 1646 puis en 1673. Le peintre-graveur Romeyn de Hooghe avait à cette seconde occasion réalisé 42 gravures, réparties en trois groupes de treize planches accompagnées d’un frontispice. Ces gravures allégoriques sont toutes présentes ici, mais inversées et en format réduit. Outre les frontispices, on y voit un homme sur son lit de mort, tourmenté par des démons mais aussi entouré d’anges, qui lui présentent des scènes de la vie du Christ pour lui servir d’exemple et d’encouragement, incitant le lecteur à une « double lecture, immédiate, qui conforte son expérience spirituelle » (D. Roche, « La Mémoire de la Mort », p. 79). L’ouvrage lui-même, à destination des élites fortunées, témoigne du goût de l’époque pour les ars moriendi. Brunet, I, col. 1834 ; Cohen-de Ricci, col. 232-233 ; Funck, p. 350. In-4 (260 x 202 mm). Titre imprimé en rouge et noir. 3 frontispices et 39 planches hors-texte, réparties en trois groupes de 13 planches, l’ensemble gravé en taille-douce et tiré sur vergé. Les gravures, non signées, sont attribuées à Romeyn de Hooghe (rousseurs et taches éparses, mouillure brune en marge extérieure des 4 derniers feuillets, petite restauration en marge intérieure des planches n°3 et 33). Rare ensemble de planches gravées par Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) d’après les dessins de Juan Ledesma, capitaine ingénieur de l’armée espagnole et probablement destinées à une édition française inconnue ou jamais publiée. Il se compose de 3 frontispices, 7 portraits non signés (Charles Quint, Philippe II, Alexandre Farnese, Marguerite de Parme, le duc d’Albe, Louis de Requesens et Don Juan d’Autriche), 21 spectaculaires scènes de bataille : e.a. Oestervel (Oosterweel), Lépante, la prise des villes de Maastricht, Valenciennes, Tournai, Anvers, Oudenaarde, 2 superbes vues du pont de Farnese devant Anvers et son bombardement.
