        A Robert Hopkin Archive, over Thirty Pieces. A collection of ephemera, including written agreement regarding copyright and production of printed images between Hopkin and Charles L. Clark, dated December 10th, 1898, as well as the printed images of Hopkins works, 2 framed photographs of Hopkin, 1 framed watercolor of "Crown Alley", Hopkin's smoking pipe, and Charles L. Clark's silver plated door plaque from his Indian Village home. Paper is in various states of wear, the letter has many folding creases and losses at corners, the pipe has old repair and damage to stem, the plaque shows scratches. Plaque is 7 1/2 x 3 1/4" h, watercolor is 4 3/8 x 6 3/8" high. ESTIMATE $400-600 Ex. Charles L. Clark Collection, obtained by him directly from Robert Hopkin. NOTE: Robert Hopkin was born in Glasgow Scotland in 1932 and came to Detroit with his parents in 1843. He began his career as a self-taught painter of houses, signs, and steamboat interiors and became one of leading artists of Michigan around the end of the nineteenth century. He was a prolific painter of marine and landscape scenes. In 1907, the Detroit Museum of Art held an exhibition in his honor, at which time his fellow artists founded the Hopkin Club, which later became the Scarab Club.

BIOGRAPHY: Robert B. Hopkin was the leading painter in mid to late 19th-century Detroit and was recognized during his lifetime. He created over 390 oils and watercolors, including views of the Great Lakes, the local landscape, and views from his travels to Ireland, Scotland, and throughout the U.S. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1843 and became a resident marine and landscape painter of Detroit, Michigan. From 1843 to his death on March 21, 1909, he resided almost continuously in Detroit, MI, excluding one year spent in Chicago, 1870. Hopkin opened his own studio in 1853, he created ship pictures, seascapes, landscapes, and decorative works He was known for marine subjects and decorated the interiors of chokes, buildings, and passenger steamboats in Detroit, Canada, Denver, and New Orleans, among other cities. His best known works were his interior decorations for the New Orleans Cotton Exchange and the Detroit Opera House.
