Jan Josef Horemans the Elder (Antwerp, 1682 - 1752) - Important Flemish Interior Scene of the 17th Century

Oil on canvas, signed lower right corner. Dimensions: 65 x 69 cm; 115 x 100 cm with frame. Flemish painter. He trained with the sculptor Michiel van der Voorti and later with the Dutch painter Jan van Pee. He worked primarily in Antwerp, becoming a member of its Painters' Guild in 1706. His work fits perfectly within the city's pictorial tradition and the Flemish school itself. Horemans specialized in painting numerous small-format, anecdotal genre scenes, depictions of contemporary daily life. These works are undoubtedly linked to the development of this genre in the 17th century, of which Horemans was merely a continuator, without any particular creative aspirations, due to the still-strong demand. In fact, his works fetched high prices on the market. The painting in the Prado Museum, Schoolmaster, is a good example. Minor damage to richly carved and gilt frame of that time (each approx. 56 x 46 cm). Die beiden Künstler Jan Josef Horemans, Vater und Sohn, arbeiteten regelmäßig zusammen, ihre Werke stehen sich stilistisch so nahe, dass eine Händescheidung oft kaum möglich ist. Ihre Gemälde sind wertvolle Zeugnisse aus dem Alltag der flämischen Familien in Stadt und Land. Sämtliche Einrichtungsgegenstände werden auf den Gemälden ebenso akribisch wiedergegeben wie die Kleidung der Dargestellten. Aufgrund dieser aufmerksamen Schilderung bürgerlichen Lebens wurden die Arbeiten der Horemans mit jenen des venezianischen Genremalers Pietro Longhi, mit den französischen Szenen des Jean Siméon Chardin oder des vorwiegend in Rom tätigen Michelangelo Cerrutti in Verbindung gebracht. LANDSCHAFTSMALER IN SEINEM ATELIER Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 40 x 32,5 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Im Atelier sitzt ein Maler vor einer Staffelei mit Leinwand. In seiner linken Hand eine Palette mit Pinseln haltend, malt er mit der rechten eine Landschaft. Er blickt dabei aus dem Bild heraus. Seitlich neben ihm sitzend ein Junge, der wohl gerade eine Zeichnung anfertigt. In Hintergrund betrachtet ein stehendes Paar das Werk des Malers. Im Vordergrund links ist ein Mädchen unterhalb eines großen Fensters, durch das Licht in den Raum fällt. Malerei in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. DAS LAUBHÜTTENFEST Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 55 x 43 cm. In einem wertvoll ausgestatteten Salon mit Gemälden an den Wänden und einem schweren roten, von der Decke hängenden und zur Seite gerafften Samtvorhang, die um einen weiß gedeckten Tisch fröhlich versammelte elegante Gesellschaft. Eine Bedienstete hat gerade rechts eine glänzende Schale mit zwei Weinflaschen zum probieren hereingebracht. Links sitzend eine Dame mit einem hochgehaltenen Weinkelch, den ein neben ihr stehender Diener mit Wein befüllt. Erzählerische Darstellung mit vielen Details. Der aus Antwerpen stammende Maler war vor allem für seine Genreszenen bekannt, malte aber auch Portraits und historische Allegorien. Figure study of a standing woman, seen from behind, by Jan Horemans the Elder of Antwerp. The red chalk drawing is from the famed Smet collection and has the SMET A.F.C. stamp on the verso. A number of similar drawings by Horemans from the Smet Collection were sold by Christie's in London in November 2000. Jan Josef Horemans the Elder (1682-1759) was a Flemish painter of the 18th century. Born in Antwerp, he is known for portraits, genre works, and historical allegories. He produced a large number of small anecdotal pictures that were executed in the tradition of 17th-century Flemish genre painters.

Verso auf altem Rahmenaufkleber betitelt und Künstlernennung. In dekorativem Rahmen. Vor einem Sockel mit Puttirelief und der hellen Skulptur eines Löwen, eine junge Frau sitzend mit einem abgedeckten und einem großen offenen Korb, von dem sie Pilze zum Verkauf anbietet. Neben ihr, ebenfalls in die Hocke gegangen, ein Herr in braunem Gewand, der Pilze erwerben möchte, von dem sie sich jedoch abwendet. Neben den beiden stehend ein vornehm gekleideter Jäger mit rotem Rock, langem Gewehr und Dreispitz auf dem Kopf, mit seiner ausgestreckten rechten Hand auf die Ware hinweisend. Ein kleiner Hund beschnuppert die in braunem Gewand mit türkisfarbener Schürze und weißer Haube sitzende junge Frau. Im Hintergrund die hohen Mauern eines verfallenen, teils bewachsenen antiken Gebäudes. Nach rechts fällt der Blick auf den hohen hellblauen Himmel mit weiß-grauen Wolken und auf zwei weitere Jäger mit Hund sowie ein junges Paar. Das Licht fällt von links herein und bestrahlt insbesondere das Gesicht und die Ware, als auch den rot gekleideten Käufer. Feine qualitätvolle Malerei mit gekonnter Licht- und Schattenführung. MÄNNER BEIM KEGELN VOR EINER TAVERNE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 50 x 59,5 cm. Links unten signiert „J.Horemans.“. Unterhalb einer Weinlaub berankten Abdeckung vor dem Eingang zu einer Laube mehrere Männer beim Kegelspiel. Sie scheinen über einen gerade ausgeführten Wurf zu diskutieren, bei dem vier Kegel stehen geblieben sind. Vor ihnen am rechten unteren Bildrand die liegenden Kegel sowie die große Kugel, auf die einer der stehenden Männer im weißen Hemd verweist, während sein Gegenüber in geflickter blauer Jacke die Arme unwissend ausstreckt. Hinter ihnen ein Tisch mit fröhlich zechenden und Karten spielenden Bauern, denen gerade die Wirtin in einem flachen Korb Nachschub an Getränken gebracht hat. Noto per i ritratti e per le scene di genere Horemans ha prodotto un gran numero di piccoli quadri aneddotici eseguiti nella tradizione dei pittori fiamminghi del XVII secolo, divenendo il principale cronista della vita quotidiana durante la prima metÃ del XVIII secolo.

Red chalk, 26,5 x 10,3 cm (tipped at upper corners to modern blue backing sheet). - Jan Jozef I Horemans (1682-1759) was an Antwerp artist known for his genre scenes but he also painted portraits and historical allegories. He produced a large number of small anecdotal pictures that were executed in the tradition of 17th-c. Flemish genre painters such as Adriaen Brouwers and David Teniers. He used various tricks of composition to present a vivid account of episodes in private houses, inns and courtyards. The figure in this drawing fits well within the artist's oeuvre and is a reccurent figure type in the works of Horemans. Also technically, the sheet is akin to the known corpus of drawings on red chalk by the Antwerp artist. Old attribution on verso "Horemans del.". - Joined: Anonymous - Young boy with feathered cap. Der aus Antwerpen stammende Maler war vor allem für seine Genreszenen bekannt, malte aber auch Portraits und historische Allegorien.MARKTSZENE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 59 x 51 cm. Verso auf altem Rahmenaufkleber betitelt und Künstlernennung. In dekorativem Rahmen. Vor einem Sockel mit Puttirelief und der hellen Skulptur eines Löwen, eine junge Frau sitzend mit einem abgedeckten und einem großen offenen Korb, von dem sie Pilze zum Verkauf anbietet. Neben ihr, ebenfalls in die Hocke gegangen, ein Herr in braunem Gewand, der Pilze erwerben möchte, von dem sie sich jedoch abwendet. Neben den beiden stehend ein vornehm gekleideter Jäger mit rotem Rock, langem Gewehr und Dreispitz auf dem Kopf, mit seiner ausgestreckten rechten Hand auf die Ware hinweisend. Ein kleiner Hund beschnuppert die in braunem Gewand mit türkisfarbener Schürze und weißer Haube sitzende junge Frau. Im Hintergrund die hohen Mauern eines verfallenen, teils bewachsenen antiken Gebäudes. Nach rechts fällt der Blick auf den hohen hellblauen Himmel mit weiß-grauen Wolken und auf zwei weitere Jäger mit Hund sowie ein junges Paar. Das Licht fällt von links herein und bestrahlt insbesondere das Gesicht und die Ware, als auch den rot gekleideten Käufer. Feine qualitätvolle Malerei mit gekonnter Licht- und Schattenführung. In der Schuhmacherwerkstatt Öl auf Holz. 35 x 28,5 cm. In Prunkrahmen. In einer Werkstatt, mit reichlich Utensilien und Material ausgestattet, ein Schuster auf einem Holzschemel sitzend und ein Stück Leder über einem Modell bearbeitend. Rechts von ihm ein alter Tisch, zu seiner linken ein Holzblock mit daraufliegendem Werkzeug. Am Boden liegend ein hoher Stulpenstiefel, während ein weiterer an der Wand hängt, an der auch ein kleiner Holzstab befestigt ist, auf dem ein angeketteter Vogel sitzt. Das wenige Licht scheint von links hereinzufallen und erhellt den Schuster und sein zur Seite gewandtes Gesicht. Malerei in überwiegend monochromer grau-brauner Farbgebung, lediglich aufgelockert durch die roten Enden eines Hemdes, die unter der Arbeitskleidung hervorragen. Anmerkung: Ein vergleichbares Werk des Künstlers, jedoch mit Gesellen und Besuchern in einer Schusterwerkstatt, war bei Hampel Fine Art Auctions, München, am 05.
