Horst and Martin Kazmaier, Horst: Sixty Years of Photography, Rizzoli, New York, 1991, pl. 30 Horst P. Horst, Form: Horst, Twin Palm Publishers, Altadena, 1992, p.41 Horst P. Horst and Federica Manfredini, Horst P. Horst, Silvana Editoriale, Milan, 2018, p. 20 The pursuit of harmony has always characterized Horst P. Horst's photography: while on one hand one can appreciate the notable print quality of his black and white images, on the other hand what strikes is the way he integrates bodies into compositions of evident theatrical taste, always very restrained and elegant. In this case, the sinuous lines of the harp mirror those of the female nude, creating an atmosphere of great allure.

Platinum palladium print, printed later, image size 240 x 190mm, sheet size 350 x 280mm, signed by the photographer in pencil lower right margin recto, signed, titled, dated and annotated 'Plantinum Palladium A/P' in pencil verso. A master of formal invention, Horst's 1950s shoots for American Vogue were also informed by America's postwar appetite for elegance and glamour -- perfectly embodied in his 1951 shoot with Evelyn Tripp, a relatively new model in the Vogue stable at the time. Published on 15 November 1951, this image introduced an article entitled "The New Fashion and The Old Allure," where her Charles James gown was described as a "new, short, real ball dress you can count on to make the most of a beautiful back; a fine figure of a figure. The bodice, carved of white satin, shadowed over with black chiffon. Above-ankle skirt of layers of tulle; a chiffon bustle. New place for a pin: halfway round the curve of a little waist."
