Victor Horta (1861-1947) Suite exCeptionelle of six Art Nouveau chairs - Commissioned by Valere Carpentier (1899) This rare set of six oach chairs is a remarkable illustration of the Art Nouveau style of Victor Horta, one of the pioneers of this movement in Belgium. These pieces have eSpecially designed in 1899 for Valere Carpentier, a rich industrialist and art lover, on the occasion of the areament of his country villa located in Renaix (Ronse), in East Flanders. The backrests of the chairs have a central ornament seizedSsant, evoking a stylized shell, typical of the naturalistic inspiration dear to Horta. This fluid and organic motif illustrates the desire to merge aesthetics and nature, the fundamental principle of Art Nouveau. The top of the backrest is carefullyWay to serve as a handle, thus allowing the chair to be easily moved - an attention paid to ergonomics that testifies to Horta's genius: his creations are never purely decorative, they also respond to practical concerns.Another revealing detail: the upholsterer's nails in the shape of dog heads, concealed with refinement, betray Valere Carpentier's passion for hunting. Horta was able to integrate this personal wink to its sponsor in a work of assemblyE coherent, combining modernity, function and symbolism. The villa is designed as a perfect synthesis between archHitecture, furniture and interior decoration. Ces chaises ont des détails très reconnaissables et récurrents que l'on retrouve dans le vocabulaire ornemental de Victor Horta. Comme les pieds se terminant en « sabots ». La présence d'ornements concaves ainsi que convexes font partie de la grammaire du maître. Rapport d'état : de par des restaurations anciennes, quelques détails ont été atténués comme des mini angles (dans les corniches sur haut du dossier) qui à l'origine étaient droits et se sont arrondis au fil du temps et des polissages. Les arêtes sont ainsi moins franches. La maison de vente peut recommander sur demande un excellent ébéniste à même de restituer aux chaises leur splendeur d'antan. Elles le méritent, elles sont muséales. Le tissu de style art nouveau n'est pas d'origine. Victor Horta (1861-1947) Pair of chairs, exotic wood, c. 1902. Not found in Irpa's photographic archives. These chairs feature highly recognizable, recurring details that are part of Victor Horta's ornamental vocabulary. Like the legs ending in "clogs". Both concave and convex ornamentation are part of the master's grammar. Condition report: as a result of earlier restorations, some details have been softened, such as the mini-angles (in the cornices at the top of the backrest), which were originally straight and have become rounder with time and polishing. As a result, the edges are less sharp. On request, the auction house can recommend an excellent cabinetmaker to restore the chairs to their former glory. They deserve it - they're museum-quality. The art nouveau fabric is not original.
