Walt Horton "The Three Snoozes" Bronze Sculpture

Walt Horton (American, 1949-2010). "The Three Snoozes" bronze sculpture, n.d. Edition 32 of 300. Signed and numbered at lower right. Titled with artist's name on brass plaque. A trio of drowsy bear cubs piled against a weathered log, cast in bronze with a warm honey-gold patina that shifts to cool grey-green across the bark. The uppermost cub lifts its muzzle in a yawn while its siblings slump into the hollow beneath, paws splayed, ears rounded, fur rendered in quick incised strokes that betray the artist's origins as a cartoonist. Horton modeled comic timing into three dimensions, catching animals mid gesture rather than in repose, and the group reads as a single sleepy mass rather than three separate figures. Issued in an edition of 300 and signed and numbered at the lower right, the piece rests on a shaped hardwood base fitted with an engraved brass title plaque. About the artist: Walt Horton (1949 to 2010) built two careers from the same instinct: making people smile. Born in Edwards, Colorado, the son of Air Force Colonel Clarence Horton II and Ann French, Horton attended the University of Colorado on a track scholarship in 1968, where he met his future wife, Peggy. Formal schooling did not suit him, and in the early 1970s the couple left the United States for a seventeen year stint of missionary and commercial work in Brazil and Bermuda, where Horton became fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and raised his sons, Jesse and Ben. In Bermuda his career as a cartoonist flourished; his humorous illustration work reached clients including Taco Bell and Shell and was eventually translated into more than a hundred languages across every continent. Sculpture found him late. In 1993, newly returned to Colorado, Horton wandered into an Aspen gallery seeking nothing in particular and left with an idea: a clay rendering of a boy reading to his teddy bear. The piece sold within hours. What followed was fifteen years of gallery representation across the country and a body of bronze work defined by cartoonist's instincts translated into three dimensions, children and animals caught mid gesture with warmth and comic timing. His best known sculpture, "Repentance," depicting a boy apologizing to the bear he has just shot, stands in Beaver Creek Plaza. A deeper current ran alongside the whimsy: Horton was a devoted student of biblical history and manuscript collecting, and his more serious sculptures, a tribute to William Tyndale and a monumental David and Goliath, reflect that lifelong preoccupation. In November 2009, Horton and Peggy opened their own gallery, Walt Horton Fine Art, in Beaver Creek. He died in his sleep on March 28, 2010, at sixty one, survived by Peggy and his sons. Item # 204340
