Henri Houben (1858–1931) was a Belgian painter associated with the Antwerp School, known for his historical scenes, genre paintings, and depictions of 17th-century Flemish life. Born in Antwerp, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp under prominent teachers including Charles Verlat. Houben developed a reputation for lively compositions featuring soldiers, tavern scenes, and historical subjects inspired by the Flemish Baroque tradition, particularly the work of David Teniers the Younger. His paintings are characterized by rich color, detailed costumes, and narrative storytelling, reflecting both academic training and a revival of interest in Flemish Golden Age themes.
