A tinted plaster bust of le comte François Antoine Boissy d'Anglas (1756-1826), Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), 1812 Jean-Antoine Houdon est le plus important sculpteur français du XVIIIe siècle et il est particulièrement connu pour l'originalité et l'intimité de ses portraits. Sans surprise, parmi les plus spontanés, on trouve les portraits qu'il a exécutés de ses amis proches et de sa famille. Le buste ici présent est décrit dans l'ouvrage d'Arnason comme une création dont les traits sont tirés du vivant du Comte Boissy d'Anglas (1756-1826) en 1812 et exposé au salon de cette même année. Comme Arnason l'écrit en 1975 ce buste avait disparu (loc. cit.). Il a été redécouvert sur le marché de l'art en 2005. Avocat au parlement de Paris, François-Antoine de Boissy d'Anglas, comte de Saint-Jean-Chambre, est élu député du Tiers-État de la sénéchaussée d'Annonay aux États généraux de 1789. Il est successivement membre du Tribunat, qu'il préside brièvement en 1803, et du Sénat. Il est fait comte d'Empire. Sous la Restauration, rallié à Louis XVIII, il est nommé pair de France. En 1814, il est membre de la commission chargée de préparer la Charte (constitution politique octroyée par Louis XVIII) et demande l'égalité des protestants par rapport aux catholiques. Il a un rôle pacificateur lors de la Terreur Blanche de 1815, et défend la liberté des huguenots vis-à-vis des manifestations catholiques. Le buste en plâtre de Houdon ici présent est un important témoignage de cet appréciable personnage politique. À ce jour, nous avons seulement connaissance d'un autre buste, en marbre réalisé en 1882. Le buste a été commandé en 1881 pour la salle du Jeu de Paume ; présenté au Salon de 1883 (n°4058) par le sculpteur Aimé Napoléon Perrey le fils (1841-1900). Il est conservé à la Direction générale des Beaux-Arts de Versailles depuis le 20 juin 1883 (MV 6411). Estimation 12 000 - 15 000 €
