HOWARD, JOHN LANGLEY. 1902-1999. Magnetometer, 1958. Oil on masonite, 15 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches, signed ('John Howard Langley') at lower right corner, titled on verso. Striking painting by Langley of an instrument used to measure both the strength and direction of a magnetic field and the magnetization of a specific material. The above work features a magnetometer high above the ground, obviously on an aircraft. Magnetometers are frequently employed in this manner for mineral exploration and to assist with map geology. Howard, a San Francisco based artist known for his controversial socialist mural in Coit Tower, briefly studied engineering before pursuing art. Much of his work addresses the tension between technological development and the natural world. He also spent roughly a decade illustrating covers for the Scientific American. • 1967 MERCEDES-BENZ 230SL ROADSTER WITH HARDTOPsold
      Aug. 19, 2001

      1967 MERCEDES-BENZ 230SL ROADSTER WITH HARDTOP

      Est: $45,000 - $65,000

Chassis No. 113.042.12.019462 Engine No. 127981.12.005813 Gray-beige with Caviar tex interior and black canvas soft top Engine: six cylinder, power steering, 2,300cc., 150bhp at 5,500rpm; Gearbox: four-speed manual; Suspension: front, independent, rear, single joint swing axle, coil springs; Brakes: front disc, rear drum. Left hand drive. The 230SL, along with its larger contemporaries, the 250 and 280, was a development in the long line of Super Leicht sports models which began in the 1950s with the 300 and 190SL. This new and more angular model introduced in 1963 at the Geneva Motor Show was fast and luxurious. The styling of the 230SL made it a most attractive car which set standards in design for modern Grand Touring cars. Even today the crisp lines and pagoda roof still look fresh. Although it was intended purely as a touring car, the 230SL achieved modest success in the Liege-Sofia-Liege rally, proving it had sporting potential. The engine of the 230SL and the later 250 and 280SLs were all in-line sixes. The 230SL was rated at 150bhp DIN (170bhp SEA). Its engine is considered the most robust of the three displacements offered on the same block. All three used disc brakes at the front. The 230SL was available with a four-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. It was the lightest of the series and is more nimble than the later models. Top speed is quoted at 125mph. This example is one of just 185 cars produced in 1967, which in fact was the final year of production for the 230SL. Painted in the Mercedes-Benz factory color scheme of gray-beige with factory interior of Caviar tex, it is in completely original condition. The car was first purchased by Mr. John Howard of Carmel, California in November 1967. He drove it for 9,255 miles before selling it to Mr. Steve Mohorovich of Stockton, California in October 1968, who subsequently drove it for a further 21,813 after which it was put into storage due to the owner's elderly age. Thus the car remained unused between June 1985 and September 1999. Today the car is a virtual time-capsule and looks and drives as if it were almost new. Features include the hardtop, Blaupunkt AM radio (with instruction/manual package), air conditioning (again with instructions), Anthracite rubber mats (M-B 6131) and Koko mats, full Owner's manual and service booklet including the dealer stamps for all services, Owner's ID plate, engine and trunk and jack tags, windshield stickers, black canvas top, full tool kit with fuses and even a touch-up paint stick! The original canvas soft top is like new, so in all probability the hardtop must have been used exclusively. With a mileage of only 31,068, it is incredibly original and complete and there can be few others in this condition. All of the major systems have been recently serviced and appropriately a new set of tires and a new battery have been fitted. WITHOUT RESERVE.

Laumen 1999 on base, a unique larger than life-size bronze, light-liver patina with darkened areas height (excluding base) 195 cm; 76 3/4 in, length 220 cm; 86 1/2 in, width approx. 80 cm; 31 1/2 in, weight approx. 350kg Laumen is emerging as the leading practitioner in his field in Australia, setting new standards in the southern hemisphere for his consummate representations of the human form. The sculptor is a first generation Dutch emigre who has lectured and exhibited widely throughout Australia. Notable commissions include: ANZ Banking Group, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Legacy Organisation, Omega Trend Ltd., Royal Selangor Ltd., public sculpture for the cities of Benalla, Bendigo and Malvern, and numerous private portrait commissions. Laumen's bronze memorial group commemorating Australian war hero Sir Edward ('Weary') Dunlop in Benalla was unveiled by Prime Minister John Howard in 1996. The Grace sculpture is a meticulously researched work and from all angles is an accurate reproduction of the man and the period, revealing an insight into the cricketing technique, dress and equipment of the time. The pose is taken from the only surviving film footage of Grace in action, at a practice session towards the end of his legendary career in 1907. Prospective bidders please note that the figure was photographed before being fitted to its bronze base, which is therefore not illustrated in the catalogue.
