Original Raymond Howell Western Painting, Mixed Media

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Raymond Howell (American, 1931-2002), untitled mixed media painting, 1971. An original acrylic/watercolor on canvas with a collage of diaphemous paper over the composition created by African-American artist Raymond Howell (1831-2002). The painting is signed and dated on the front, lower left "Raymond Howell '71". This painting stands out in Howell's oeuvre as it is a western subject seemingly of a Manifest Destiny theme with two pioneers/cowboys on horseback in the middle ground and a large wagon close to the picture plane. Interestingly, the ethnicity of the figures is nebulous, simply delineated in silhouette, and it is possible that Howell was commemorating relatively unsung African-American pioneers/cowboys. Most of Howell's work addressed African-American subjects; for instance, he created a notable series depicting jazz musicians including Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis who were undeniable innovators in their form. The style of this painting is based in realism but with wonderful impressionistic influences in a soft pastel and earth tone color palette, and the painting's surface is overlaid with painted thin, translucent paper. A superb painting, strong for its composition, interesting techniques, and intriguing subject matter. Size: 48" L x 33.75" W (121.9 cm x 85.7 cm) Raymond Howell was a Bay Area artist who served as a strong role model for artists interested in creating images of African-American culture intended for a larger audience. He came of age during a period when there was not much pubic interest in arts of the African Diaspora and aspired to bring visibility to African-American subject matter. Howell was also deeply committed to providing arts education opportunities for minority youth in the Bay Area. In the 1960s, Howell founded Arts Associates West, a successful gallery and art school in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Howell's painting entitled, "The Brown Family" was exhibited at the opening of the Oakland Museum and was later acquired for that museum's permanent collection. Howell's art has been exhibited throughout the United States and in 1999, Stanford University organized a 40 year retrospective of his oeuvre. In Oakland, January 6th was declared "Raymond Howell Day" and in San Francisco, Raymond Howell Day is celebrated on September 7th which was the artist's birthday. Provenance: Ex-private Longmont, CO collection, purchased at gallery in Oakland, CA in 1987.
