Provenance:-With Kunsthandel Richard Polak.-The property of a Dutch noblewoman, The men in the splendid uniforms, known as dolmans, with their tall busbies, are members of the Korps Rijdende Artillerie (Corps of Horse Artillery), better known as the Gele Rijders (Yellow Riders). In English, they are called the Royal Horse Artillery. The others are hussars.Hoynck depicts how the soldiers make use of the services of a sutler (in French a vivandière), who this time is assisted by what is likely her husband, now drawing from a barrel instead of her portable marketenster keg. That would not hold enough for a large military exercise. A typical Hoynck detail, drawn from real life, is the Yellow Rider checking his purse to see if he has enough money on him.

French soldiers taking cover behind a ruin during Word War I, signed 'J. Hoynck' (lower left), watercolour, heightened in white, on paper, 38x47 cm (65,5x75 cm incl. frame), Hoynck depicts a battle in World War I where, in a final attempt, French soldiers try to hold back advancing Germans with machine gun and rifle fire. The fact that the enemy has already come very close is evident from the fallen comrades lying between various ruined buildings, as well as from the fact that the bayonets have been fixed to the rifles. Toen (...) U oude herinneringen ophaalde, bedacht ik mij dat op het atelier bij mijn broer in den Haag, nog wel een en ander uit dien tijd kon zijn. Ik vond en kreeg van hem bijgaande krabbels van de brand in de Schouwburg, en van het kijklustige publiek, waarbij een smeris, die al is het misschien niet degene die u van de schutting haalde, toch zonder twijfel tot zijn sectie behoorde. Op de schets van de Parkweg 1890, komt het huis van Jhr. van Riemsdijk voor (...). Bij het losmaken uit het boek is deze teekening in een der hoeken een beetje beschadigd (...)".

Because of his military knowledge and accuracy in the depiction of the subjects, his works count as a source of historical reference. It is established that each part of the attire of, for instance, a soldier, was rendered in every detail. During the mobilisation of 1914, a cavalry brigade was formed. This consisted of 4 regent hussars. This cavalry brigade was commanded from 1914-1918 by Major General W.H. Piepers, who is the first horseman from the left in the painting.
