      Harlan Hubbard, woodcut print

      Est: -

Harlan Hubbard, woodcut print Wood cut print on thin Japanese rice paper of a river community behind an approaching steam locomotive pulling passenger cars. A couple of row boats in the foreground. Signed "Harlan Hubbard" lower right in pencil. This among the most involved compositions seen from the artist. Scattered foxing to the paper, otherwise good condition. From the estate of Bert Finn, Tell City, Indiana. I purchased this on June 25th 1994 at a Garth's auction who sold his estate. Housed in a hard plastic sleeve, as bought. Scene depicted is Brent, Kentucky as verified by an illustration pulled from the same woodblock illustrated as plate 37 in "The Woodcuts of Harlan Hubbard" from the collection of Bill Caddell 1994. The books image not signed though the word "BRENT" is penciled in to the viewer's upper right corner. Brent is located near Ft, Thomas, Ky. Measures 5" by 7" and circa 1946.

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Harlan Hubbard (American/Kentucky, 1900-1988). Oil on board and housed in the artist's self made frame comprised of cut down tobacco sticks. Signed on the riverbank and dated 83. Inscribed on verso the following: "Ex. Coll. Emmett Sherlock Wood/ Madison, Ind./ Harlan Hubbard/ 1983/ Ohio at Hanover looking toward Payne Hollow". 9.75" x 22.5" (sight), 12.5" x 25" (framed). Harlan Hubbard was an artist, writer, and naturalist who lived in a self-constructed home on the Ohio River dubbed "Payne Hollow". After a riverboat trip to New Orleans, the artist published "Shantyboat: A River Way of Life" and he and his wife Anna spent the next several decades in Payne Hollow living a frugal life off the land. At his Payne Hollow studio he produced many paintings and woodcuts, principally of Ohio river scenes. Recently, Payne Hollow has commenced with restoration by a non profit group. Hubbard was often called "Kentucky's Thoreau", given his great interest in the naturalist author, and Payne Hollow was also referred to as "Walden on the Ohio".
