Emmanuel Urbain Huchet (1930-2014) was a French painter known for his fluid, gestural approach to landscapes and scenes from his travels. After studying law and a brief period owning a textile factory, he dedicated himself to painting in 1960. He was entirely self-taught, following in the footsteps of Post-Impressionist artists like Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven. His move to Paris in 1963 sparked a desire to travel, and he journeyed throughout Europe, the Middle East, and South America, finding inspiration in each location. Huchet became skilled in both oils and watercolors and, after partnering with the Park West Gallery, became an accomplished lithographer.

Signed in pencil bottom right. "EA" written in pencil bottom left, the French term for Artists Proof. Overall Size: 29 1/ x 37 1/2 in. Sight Size: 19 1/2 x 27 1/2 in. An artist’s proof, or AP, is an impression of a print taken during the printmaking process to check the work in progress. The French name, Epreuve d’artiste, is often written as “EA” to mean the same thing in European galleries and markets. There can also be printer’s proofs (“PP”) which are taken for the printer to see how the image is printing, or are final impressions the printer is allowed to keep. While some APs are incomplete “working proofs,” modern APs are often identical to the finished, numbered edition but are not included in that count. Urbain Huchet was born in Rennes, France on April 28th, 1930. His early years under the Nazi occupation instilled in him a strong drive and desire to overcome any obstacle, and after first studying law and owning a textile factory for four years, he decided in 1960 to devote himself entirely to painting. Mr. Huchet spent his first three years as an artist in Pont-Aven, following in the footsteps of the Post Impressionist, Gauguin, and Symbolist, Emile Bernard, both of whom influenced him a great deal. Entirely self-taught, he moved to Paris in 1963, where his exposure to a broad range of continental styles and international artists inspired him to become an explorer. He journeyed throughout Europe and the Middle East, spending time in Indian markets, visiting Peru, Mexico, Egypt, and every beautiful country he could, finding inspiration in each place. He painted the scenery of each locale, culminating in a book to document his experiences. His works are typified by a fluid and free, gestural approach to both form and color, and he became adept at both painting oils on canvas and with watercolor. After obtaining representation with Park West Gallery in the 1990s he also became an accomplished lithographer, with his landscapes of the Brittany region still his fondest subjects. He continues to paint to this day, with regular solo shows in New York, London, New Orleans, Cairo, and Paris each year.
