DIE SCHLACHT BEI HÖCHSTADT Öl auf Leinwand. 111 x 150 cm. Blick über eine große weite Landschaft unter hohem blauem Himmel mit einigen Wolken und der linksseitig hinter einer großen Anhöhe untergehenden Sonne. Im Vordergrund die heftig tobende Reiterschlacht mit mehreren bereits zu Boden gegangenen Kämpfern und ihren Pferden. Am rechten unteren Bildrand in rotem Gewand auf einem Schimmel sitzend wohl der Anführer der Soldaten, Feldmarschall Prinz Eugen von Savoyen, mit gezücktem hochgehaltenem Degen, dem die teils berittene Armee folgt. In der Bildmitte weitere Armeen und Feuer mit aufsteigenden Rauchschwaden zu sehen. Darstellung der im August 1704 stattgefundenen Schlacht, die der Maler mehrfach darstellte und der auch den Prinzen begleitete. Der Maler lernte bei Thomas Wijck und ging noch in sehr jungen Jahren nach Rom zu seinem Bruder Jacob van Huchtenburg, der Landschaften in der Manier des Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem malte. In den Jahren 1708 bis 1717 begleitete er den österreichischen Feldmarschall Prinz Eugen von Savoyen auf dessen Feldzügen und malte dessen Schlachten in großen Zyklen. Indistinct signature lower left The painting depicts a military encampment bustling with soldiers on horseback and on foot, captured resting and conversing, with saddled horses and tents set up at the edges of the scene. The composition opens onto a broad landscape with an urban view in the background, bathed in warm, atmospheric light. The attention to narrative detail, the lively characterization of the figures, and the solid rendering of the horses fully reflect the style of Jan van Huchtenburgh, a renowned painter of military and genre painting between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. From 1708 to 1709, he served Eugene of Savoy, for whom he painted numerous battle scenes, including the famous series of the 'Battaglie Savoude' (Battles of Savoy), now housed in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin. His European career was long and highly successful, with a large and highly regarded body of work. His works are held in important public collections such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, as well as in prestigious private collections. MARKTTAG IN DER STADT Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 96 x 111 cm. Signiert und datiert „1617". Sammlungsplakette mit Namensnennung des Künstlers. In reliefiertem Rahmen. Vor der Silhouette einer südlichen Stadt, die eine große Menschenansammlung anlässlich eines Markttages zeigt, ein Kirchengebäude, das anhand eines Giebelkreuzes erkennbar ist. Unter einem davorstehenden Repoussoir-Baum einige Pferde, – ein Motiv, auf das Huchtenburg spezialisiert war – sowie Figuren, deren Physiognomie besonders genau beobachtet ist und deren lebensechte und glaubwürdige Handlungen dem Betrachter einen anschaulichen Eindruck von der Lebendigkeit vermitteln, die einem solchen Ereignis seinerzeit innewohnte. Ein Gemälde vergleichbarer Komposition wurde am 28. Oktober 1992 unter Lot 94 bei Sotheby’s in London angeboten. Ein weiteres Gemälde im Staatlichen Museum Schwerin (Inv.Nr. G 2290) zeigt das Pferd in der gleichen Position. Jan van Huchtenburgh lernte bei Thomas Wijck und ging noch in sehr jungen Jahren nach Rom, zu seinem Bruder Jacob van Huchtenburg, der Landschaften in der Manier des Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem malte. In den Jahren 1708 bis 1717 begleitete er den österreichischen Feldmarschall Prinz Eugen von Savoyen auf dessen Feldzügen und malte dessen Schlachten in großen Zyklen. (1450021) (13)

Im Zentrum ein gerade zu Boden gehender Reiter auf einem Schimmel, hinter dem ein berittener Soldat mit seinem Schwert zum Schlag ausholt. Rechts ein Reiter mit großer heller Fahne, während links ein Kämpfer am Boden liegt und ein Soldat mit auffallend roter Hose erschrocken mit weit geöffnetem Mund diesen ansieht. Graue Rauchschwaden vom Kampfgeschehen steigen auf in den blauen Himmel mit weissen Wolken. Für den Künstler typisches, vielfiguriges Schlachtenbild in meist grau-beiger Farbgebung, aufgelockert durch weiße und rote Farbakzente. Jan van Huchtenburgh counts today as among the most important and successful painters of battles and cavalry skirmishes in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, serving prestigious European clients such as Pieter de la Court van der Voort (1664–1739) from Leiden, Prince Eugene of Savoye (1663–1736) and Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatine (1658–1715) in Düsseldorf. Van Huchtenburgh’s success was that he added elegance and bravura to the otherwise cruel scenes of battles and skirmishes and thus brought the genre to a new artistic level, suitable for the homes of the European aristocracy. Among van Huchtenburgh’s most famous works are the so called Battaglie Sabaude, the series of battles painted for Prince Eugen of Savoye in 1707/08, currently in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin (inv. nos. 886, 887, 889–892, 894, 896–898). Van Huchtenburgh probably met the prince during his journey to the Netherlands. The Sabaudean series stimulated the Elector Palatine to follow and the latter commissioned a series of similar battles, of which two are conserved in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. nos. 2070–2071). Other courtly houses in Europe followed. The present cavalry battle is in its dynamism, fluid brushwork and colour scheme a characteristic work by the artist and is probably to be dated to the second quarter of the eighteenth century. The battle is not historic. It rather depicts a confrontation between cavalry and artillery, approaching from the back.

The Battle of Chiari was fought on 1 September 1701 between the Austrian troops under Prince Eugene of Savoy and the Franco-Spanish-Savoyard alliance under the commandership of François de Neufville, Duke of Villeroy during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Austrian imperialists gained an enormous victory and could successfully seize the Spanish controlled Duchy of Milan. Here, Prince Eugene is shown in the foreground, almost at the centre, issuing orders to his adjutants. Prince Eugene of Savoy (Paris 1663–1736 Vienna) was a great military strategist but also a passionate art lover, patron and collector, he created an extraordinary collection of paintings destined to decorate his summer residence, the Belvedere Palace in Vienna and other residences he owned. After his death, the picture collection was for the most part acquired by Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, and thus incorporated in the Royal collections in Turin. During his youth in Paris, Prince Eugene had the opportunity to admire the great battle scenes commissioned by the court of Louis XIV from the best artists of the time for the Palace of Versailles, such as, the frescoes for the Ambassadors’ Staircase, painted between 1677 and 1678 by Adam Frans van der Meulen after a design by Charles Le Brun (the frescoes were destroyed in the mid-18th century), or the decoration of the famous Gallery of Mirrors, another work by Le Brun, completed in 1681. When it came to choosing a painter to accompany him on his military campaigns of 1708–1709, Prince Eugene’s choice fell on Jan van Huchtenburg, a Dutch artist who in the last years of the 17th century had worked under Le Brun and van der Meulen at the court of Louis XIV, as also in the Parisian tapestry manufactory of the Gobelins. Eugene of Savoy’s most important commission to van Huchtenburg was for the canvases which now hang in the Galleria Sabauda. The artist painted them between 1712 and 1717, bringing together the 17th-century tradition of crowded and agitated battle-scenes, with the commander in the foreground and the older tradition of the bird’s-eye view, providing at the same time a detailed representation of the events, and a compelling celebration of the victorious commander. At the time of Prince Eugene’s death, this large pictorial cycle was listed in the inventory as present in the antechamber of the ceremonial rooms of Schloss Hof, purchased by the prince in 1725, however, its original place of display remains unknown; it is possible that initially it hung in the Belvedere in Vienna. The series of Eugene of Savoy’s battles by van Huchtenburg enjoyed a great success throughout Europe, also thanks to the engravings that the artist himself derived from the paintings in order to illustrate the Batailles gagnées par le serenissime prince Fr. The first scene shows the Battle of Turin, during which the Savoy capital was liberated from the long siege of the French army between May and September 1706. The Austro-Piedmontese troops, led by Prince Eugene and the Duke of Savoy, repulsed the attack on 7 September 1706, forcing the French to flee. Prince Eugene is shown on horseback on the right, wearing a red coat, next to his cousin Victor Amadeus II. In the background we see the city of Turin, identifiable by the outline of its towers, as well as the characteristic star-shape of the military fort. The second canvas depicts the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, between the Anglo-Dutch united armies under the command of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene against the French led by Maréchal de Villars and later by Louis-François, Duc de Boufflers. In this painting Prince Eugene appears on the left-hand side of the composition, turning his gaze towards the spectator, whom he conceptually invites to participate in his success. The scene of a courtly home-coming from a day’s chase, is a characteristic example of the oeuvre of Jan van Huchtenburg, as exemplified by the subtle handling of late afternoon light, masterful rendering of horses and varied human narrative. In spite of his Dutch training, Van Huchtenburg’s mature style owes much to his time in Paris working with Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632–1690), peintre ordinaire de Roi at the court of Louis XIV. The French classical trappings of the fountain and architecture surmounted by statuary closing off the composition to left and right, along with the refined costume of the aristocrats reposing after a day’s sport, reminds the viewer of the contemporary transformation of former hunting lodges such as Versailles into temples of elegance. Famed also for his battle scenes, in particular cavalry skirmishes, the present work shows Van Huchtenburg’s eye both for detail and atmosphere, from the repoussoir figure of the boy tending the hooded falcons in the foreground to the bubbling jet of the fountain silhouetted against the sunset behind. The pendant to this painting is possibly 'A hunting party by a fountain' sold at Christie’s, London, 17 December 1999, lot 115. Van Huchtenburg was born in Haarlem. His career took him across Europe. He was trained by Hendrick Mommers, Thomas Wijck and Philips Wouwerman. He was active in Paris (where he worked at the Manufacture des Gobelins and where he stood in the service of Prince Eugene of Savoy since ca. 1708), Rome, Haarlem where he was a member of the guild of Saint Luke and of the Confrerie Pictura), Amsterdam, Leiden, Höchstädt an der Donau, Düsseldorf, Vienna and The Hague.
