FRENCH, 1842-1899 THE KING CANDAULE measurements 28 1/2 by 23 1/2 in. alternate measurements 72.5 by 59.5 cm signed Charles Hue and dated 1864 (lower right) oil on panel EXHIBITED Possibly, Paris, Salon, 1864, no. 969 NOTE The subject is taken from Herodotus' Stories and shows the Lydian Queen Rodolphe slowly undressing, admired by her husband King Candaule. Meanwhile, lieutenant Gyges, hidden behind a curtain, admires the nude queen. Several artists painted this subject, including seventeenth century Dutch painters such as Eglon-Hendrick can der Neer and Franz von Mieris the Elder. Chasseriau painted a Candaule roi de Lydie in 1850, and Gérôme made his own version in 1859 (Museo de Arte, Ponce, Puerto Rico.) This painting is very typical of the Pompeian style, so popular in France during the 1850-1860s, due primarily to Prince Napoleon's Pompeian House, located on Avenue Montaigne, in Paris.
