The man holds fishing nets, and in the background three additional figures launch a boat. Two more boats sail under a sunset or sunrise in the distance. Titled and signed in pencil, lower margin. Housed under glass in an ebonized wooden frame with grey mat and black reveal. Image: 9" H x 6 1/2" W. Sight: 9 3/4" H x 7 1/4" W. Frame: 14 3/4" H x 12" W. 2nd item: Print titled "In The Woods" depicting a man and woman chopping and hauling logs in a woodland setting. Titled and signed in pencil, lower margin. Housed under glass in an ebonized wooden frame with ivory mat. Image: 9 1/2" H x 7 1/4" W. Sight: 10 3/4" H x 8" W. Frame: 15 1/4" x 12 3/4" W. Biography: Often called "The Father of Jamaican Painting," Albert Huie was born in Falmouth, Jamaica in 1920. He started painting in 1936 and studied at Ontario College of Art in Toronto. In 1947 he was awarded a British Council scholarship and then studied at Camberwell School of Art in London. He received several awards, including the Institute of Jamaica's Silver and Gold Musgrave Medals in 1958 and 1974, respectively. Huie was presented with an international award for painting at the Spanish Bi-Annual exhibition in Havana, Cuba in 1959. In 1962, he received the Jamaica Government award for the best painting in the annual National Exhibition. He has also been the recipient of the Badge of Honour for his contribution to art (1968). Also in that year he participated in a group exhibition presented by the Caribbean Committee for Cultural Advancement in Canada. (Adapted from the National Library of Jamaica)

In 1939 he won the award for his art at the New York World’s Fair and another prestigious award that same year at the San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition. In 1953 he was presented with the International Award at the Spanish Biennale. In 1976 he received the Institute of Jamaica Gold Musgrove Medal, The order of Distinction in 1983 and became Commander of the Order of Distinction in 1992. Waddington’s has sold two canvases by Albert Huie. One “Nude with Bananas” acquired in 1965 during an exhibition held in Ottawa at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa sold on December 8, 2009, Lot 269. Another “Quiet Sunday Ocho Rios, Jamaica” sold on June 14, 2011, Lot 276.Albert Huie’s works are well represented in the National Gallery of Canada’s collection and his works are also collected internationally.

    Albert Huie (1920-?), Jamaican NUDE WITH BANANAS; Oil on canvasboard; signed lower left 22" x 17" - 55.9 x 43.2 cm. Provenance: Mildred MacDonald, Ottawa, gifted from the artist, in 1965, during an exhibition held in Ottawa at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, Ottawa; By descent, Private Collection, Ottawa Note: Broadcasting Pioneer Mildred MacDonald, was one of Canada's first female broadcasters (ref: CBC). This work was gifted to Mrs. MacDonald in August 1965 after she completed an interview with the artist for the CBC radio show, "Morning Commentary". Huie and another Jamaican artist were touring three Canadian cities (Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa). Included with the painting is a copy of the original script outline used on-air and the original, unedited, interview which runs approximately 10 minutes long.
