    Thelma Hulbert,  British 1913-1995 -  Mecklenburgh Square, 1947;  oil on card, signed and dated lower left 'T.Hulbert 47', 74 x 54.5 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Private Collection, purchased directly from the artist  Note: during the 1930s, Hulbert was close to the group of artists which included William Coldstream and Victor Pasmore. This work depicts the home she live in, where Merlyn Evans also had a flat.  She had solo exhibitions at Leicester Galleries, Redfern and Marjorie Parr Galleries and a retrospective at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1962. Her home and studio in Honiton is now a museum, with a room devoted to her work.

    Hulbert (Thelma, 1913-1995). Honesty and Window, 1980, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 107 x 91.5cm (42 x 36ins), framed, with Christopher Hull Gallery label to verso, additionally titled, dated and signed to verso. Thelma Hulbert (1913-1995) was born in Bath, and studied at the Bath School of Art, before moving to London in 1934, where she met Victor Pasmore, William Coldstream and Claude Rogers. With them, she helped to run the Euston Road School of Drawing and Painting in the late 1930s, for which she acted as organising secretary. A retrospective of her work was held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1962. (1)

Hulbert took part in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at Leicester, Redfern and Marjorie Parr Galleries and a retrospective at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1962. Arts Council, Contemporary Art Society, provincial and foreign galleries hold her work.
