Abraham Hulk was an Anglo-Dutch painter, draftsman and lithographer. Initially trained as a portrait painter, he became a well-known marine painter and the patriarch of a whole family of Anglo-Dutch artists. Hulk was born in London, the son of merchant Hendrik Hulk and Mary Burroughs, and trained as a portrait painter with Jean Augustin Daiwaille (1786-1850) before continuing his artistic education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. During 1833 and 1834 he traveled to America, visiting New York and Boston, exhibiting in the latter city. In 1834 he returned to Amsterdam, where he lived until 1855, when he moved several times until 1870, when he settled in England, where he spent the rest of his life. He achieved great recognition due to his ability to paint the sea and its ships in a personal way. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1876 to 1890 where he entered three paintings of which two were Dutch seascapes. He also exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries in London and in Leeuwarden and The Hague in the Netherlands from 1843 to 1868. He formed a whole saga of painters belonging to his family among whom are his younger brother Johannes Frederik Hulk Senior (1829-1911), his sons Hendrik Hulk (1842-1937), Abraham Hulk Junior (1843-1919) and Willem Frederik Hulk (b. 1852) and his nephew Johannes Frederik Hulk (1855-1913).

Bei starkem Wellengang mehrere Fischerboote mit Segeln auf hoher See. Rechtsseitig eine Stadt und eine große Hafenanlage unter hohem, noch sonnigem Himmel mit von links aufziehendem Unwetter mit großen dunklen Wolken. Der in London geborene Maler erhielt seine künstlerische Ausbildung u. a. an der Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In den Jahren 1833 und 1834 reiste er nach Amerika und besuchte New York und Boston. 1835 kehrte er in die Niederlande zurück, wo er sich auf die Malerei von Meereslandschaften spezialisierte – sowohl bei ruhigem als auch bei stürmischem Wetter. 1870 ließ er sich für den Rest seines Lebens in England nieder. Er wurde zu einem der großen Marinemaler, da es ihm gelang, ein idealisiertes atmosphärisches Bild von Schiffen auf See unter verschiedensten Wetterbedingungen darzustellen. The son of Dutch textile merchants Hendrik Hulk and Mary Burroughs, he first trained as portrait painter at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam before turning to marine subjects which were among his most acclaimed works. Hulk exhibited in New York, Amsterdam, The Hague and London where three of his works were showed at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1876 and 1890. Hulk was a skilful atmospheric painter con-cerned with the effects of fine lights on his rural and seascapes compositions.

Provenance With MacConnal-Mason, St James's, London (label verso) A leading marine painter of the 19th Century, Abraham Hulk was born in London to a Dutch family and went on to study at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam from 1828. Influence stemmed from his teacher Jean Augustus Daiwaille (1786-1850) who greatly encouraged his successful career as a maritime painter, exhibiting extensively from 1832-1896 in Amsterdam, The Hague and Leeuwarden. Notably, his works were also exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1876-1890. The present example showcases the artist's ability to capture a tranquil coastal scene with boats on still waters where the depiction of gentle light infuses a sense of calm.
