Lot 253: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890)

Auction Date: Nov 21, 2020

Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000

Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980) , "Macaws", 1925, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 30 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Collection of noted collector Michael Wilkinson, New Orleans, LA. Ill.: Levingston, Bruce. Bright Fields: The Mastery of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2015, p. 45. Note: The paintings of birds created by Marie Hull during her 1925-1926 stay in St. Petersburg, Florida are among her most vibrant, beautiful and desirable works, juxtaposing the naturalistic poses of the birds with stylized Art Deco depictions of fruit and flora. While many studies done in pencil or watercolor of exotic birds from this time period exist, the completed paintings in gouache or oil are of exceptional rarity in the artist?s oeuvre with only a dozen or so known today - including the work offered here. Hull depicts a pair of scarlet macaws perched on a twisting grape vine branch, which dissects the canvas diagonally. The background is punctuated by dangling bunches of purple grapes and green leaves. The jewel tones of the main elements against the ombre background of gold and green hues highlight the tropical inspiration of the scene and reveal Hull?s early sensitivity as a colorist with a keen eye for composition. Lot 63: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890)

Auction Date: Nov 20, 2020

Estimate: $1,800 - $2,500

Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980) , "Cordes Aug 14", 1929, watercolor and graphite on paper, pencil-signed lower left, titled lower right, 14 3/4 in. x 12 1/4 in., framed . Ill.: Levingston, Bruce. Bright Fields: The Mastery of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2015, p. 63. Note: In the spring of 1929, Marie Hull commenced an eight-month journey that would be one of the most inspirational and important periods of her long and celebrated career. Massachusetts artist George Elmer Brown, who was living in France at the time, ran a series of travel study programs which provided students, and other established artists such as Hull, the opportunity to visit various countries for artistic study of the landscapes and cultures. Hull's own passion for landscape, as evidenced by her earlier travels throughout the United States, was a perfect fit for the program, and her resulting depictions of the countryside of France, Spain and North Africa reveal her skill and lifelong openness to stylistic experimentation and growth. As Bruce Levingston writes of the significance of this trip: "It was not only that for the first time she saw many great masterpieces in person; she also was forced to rethink everything she knew about her concepts of art?this trip was a new beginning for her." The watercolor offered here of Cordes, France shows Hull is clearly exploring ideas of space and color through keen observation, rapid brushstrokes and carefully chosen line details. Marie Hull Marie Hull painted this remarkable canvas entitled ?Blackbirds? in 1945. The work serves as a linchpin of her transitional period, when she began veering away from the figurative and exploring the abstract. ?Blackbirds? calls on her most famous paintings of birds from the 1920s, while showcasing her newfound appreciation for abstraction as encouraged by her student, Andrew Bucci. Lot 178: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890)

Auction Date: Apr 13, 2019

Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000

Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "Tenant Fa. Note: During the mid to late 1930s, Marie Hull completed a group of portraits of Mississippi tenant farmers (sometimes titled Sharecroppers). The sitters were often neighbors from nearby farms, with several sitters painted a number of times. Hull built on the skills she had learned at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to delicately represent the anatomy of the sitters in order to ?capture the essence of personality.? In all of these portraits, Hull developed a sense of empathy for the farmers, many of whom were feeling the strains of the Great Depression. The backgrounds of almost all of the tenant farmer portraits include vast areas of farm land, representing the sitters? ties to the terrain. In the painting presented here, Hull has left the background somewhat abstract, although a cabin or farmhouse can be noticed in the distance. The brushwork of the fields and sky are particularly vibrant and expressionistic, a precursor to Hull?s later abstract paintings beginning in the 1950s. Ref.: Levingston, Bruce. Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890)

Lot 183: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890)

Auction Date: Apr 13, 2019

Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "Macaws", 1925, oil on panel, signed lower right, signed, titled, dated and inscribed "St Peters burg [sic], Florida" en verso, 30 in. x 25 in., framed. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, c. 1960s; descended in a Mississippi Private Collection. Note: Marie Hull toured the country in 1925, and she enjoyed the city of St. Petersburg, Florida so much that she and her husband decided to settle in the area for about a year. While there, Hull focused on painting the exotic plants and animals, specifically birds such as parrots, egrets, and flamingos. The paintings of birds that Hull produced during this time period are among her most vibrant and beautiful, juxtaposing the naturalistic poses of the birds in the foreground with a stylized, Art Nouveau background of either flowers or fruit. In the significant painting presented here, Hull depicts Blue and Gold Macaws with a background of oranges hanging from branches. The jewel tones of the feathers against the background of orange hues highlight the tropical nature of the painting and exhibit Hull?s sensitivity as a colorist. Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "High Horizon", 1959, oil on canvas, signed lower right, inscribed "Horizon" and partial exhibition label on stretcher, 36 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Ill.: Elias, Virginia McGehee, Haynie, William S., et al. The Art of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1975, p. 68. Ill.: Elias, Virginia McGehee, Haynie, William S., et al. The Art of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1975, p. 68. ?High Horizon? was painted in 1959 when Mrs. Hull was experimenting with abstract Expressionism. The subject matter is a building at the top of a snow-covered hill. The colors have become more intense than in her earlier works. Reds predominate, especially in the sky, to heighten the emotional impact of the painting. Texture has also gained importance as a means of expression. Both the thicker application of paint in some areas and the dripping effect of the paint are visually stimulating. The artist?s continued interest in both color relationships and the diffusion of light is apparent. She has boldly approached and handled the painting, and the result is a strong personal statement." --- Norwood, Malcolm M., Virginia McGehee Elias and William S. Haynie. The Art of Marie Hull. Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi)

Lot 168: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi)

Auction Date: Sep 15, 2018

Estimate: $6,000 - $9,000

Description: Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "After the Hurricane", 1969, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 34 in. x 27 3/4 in., framed. Provenance: Collection of Stuart C. Irby, Jr. to the present owner. Note: The gestural brushstrokes and rectangular forms in the painting offered here are a testament to Marie Hull?s evolving style throughout her life. Hull primarily painted portraits and landscapes throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Beginning around 1940, she began to experiment by including flat, interlocking planes of color to interpret her surroundings in Mississippi, inspired by Abstract Expressionism. The title ?After the Hurricane? would most likely refer to Hurricane Camille. A particularly intense storm, Camille made landfall in Pass Christian, Mississippi on August 18, 1969. The beautiful, but chaotic shapes in Hull's painting perfectly portray the aftermath of a storm on the Gulf Coast....
