Height 6 in. Width 7.5 in., Depth 3.5 in., 6 lbs. 7.1 oz. Signed Anna V. Hyatt. In the early 1900s, Anna Hyatt studied art in Boston and at the Art Students League in New York and quickly emerged as one of the most prestigious women artists of her era. Traveling to Europe in 1907, Hyatt opened a studio in France where she worked on her first equestrian sculpture. An award-winning artist, early exhibitions included the Society of American Artists, Louisiana Purchase Expo in St. Louis, Lewis and Clark Expo, Paris Salon, Panama Pacific International Exposition, National Academy of Design, and American Sculpture California Palace of the Legion of Honor. In the 1930s, she received a special commission to create a series of sculptures for the Hispanic Society of New Yorks buildings and courtyard. In 1932, Anna and husband Archer M. Huntington purchased four former plantations on the South Carolina coast where they built Brookgreen Gardens, a nature preserve and sculpture museum. Her works are widely collected throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Huntington" above the bottom edge, mounted on a verde antique marble base. Bronze: H: 8.5 in., L: 9.375 in., W: 4.125 in. Base: H: 1.625 in., L: 9.625 in., W: 5.625 in. Provenance: Roman Bronze Works Foundry Cache: Philip J. Schiavo, owner of the Roman Bronze Works, Queens, New York; directly to Patrick Roberts, founder of the American Museum of Industry and Technology, New Preston, Connecticut; directly through Mr. Robertsâ Probate Estate to the present owner Riccardo Bertelli, a native of Genoa, Italy, established The Roman Bronze Works in 1897. It was the first American foundry to specialize in the lost-wax casting method, grew to become the countryâs preeminent art foundry, and had been casting bronzes since its founding in 1897. At the end of his life and when the Roman Bronze Works was closing, Mr. Philip J. Schiavo (1917-1965) donated hundreds of models and castings from the storage and restoration rooms to the American Museum of Industry and Technology for their preservation and care. Patrick Roberts (1950-2021) was a collector and preservationist of industrial age technology artifacts, as well as specialized areas in American history and fine art. He was the founder and director of the American Museum of Industry and Technology located in New Preston, Connecticut. The museum was a non-profit organization, essentially a private holding entity for Robert's extensive collections with assets estimated at over 9.3 million in 2016. Upon his death, his large estate not only included specialized industrial machinery and equipment, but 19th and early 20th century works of art by artists such as John Marin and Edward Hopper.

Displayed on likely original black marble base. Circa 1920. 13 3/8" LOA (figure), 4 1/2" x 15 1/2" base. Catalogue Note: Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) was one of the most important American sculptors of the 20th century. A promising young artist, Anna Hyatt studied privately with Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) before traveling to Paris, where she opened a studio of her own and began working on a large-scale model for an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, which attracted a good bit of critical acclaim and led to her first major commission from the city of New York. Her iconic depiction of Joan of Arc in full armor, sword raised, with exquisite Gothic-style granite base remains an important visual landmark in Manhattan. In 1923, Anna Hyatt married Archer Huntington, a wealthy philanthropist and patron of the arts. In 1930, the couple purchased Brookgreen Plantation, a magnificent 10,000 acre parcel on the coast of South Carolina, where they began the process of extensively landscaping the grounds and installing a world-class collection of outdoor bronze sculpture, which comprised over 300 objects when finished, including examples by Anna Hyatt Huntington herself. The couple remained active in the arts and philanthropy throughout their lives and bequeathed much of their property to public institutions upon their passing. Particularly noted for her depiction of animals, Huntington was a prolific artist, who continued working on her art late in life. The present example, probably her most recognizable form, demonstrates the artist's skill at capturing the subject's paradoxical physical qualities of finesse and power in one sculptural moment.

Hyatt" stamped and numbered by the Gorham Foundry with the foundry mark Q4 and #129, 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 3 in. Hyatt Huntington was an extremely prolific and successful sculptor of public monuments famous for her work depicting animals in particular. "Anna Hyatt Huntington, one of the leading American sculptors of her generation, was active in her career for more than seventy of her ninety-eight years; at age ninety she completed her last equestrian statue. She worked in several mediums and created hundreds of works ranging from small bronzes to monumental equestrians. Although wild and domestic animals were Huntington's favorite subjects, she also modeled portrait busts and made vigorous studies of the human figure. Her general approach was based on and continued the French naturalistic tradition of Barye, Frémiet, and Falguière, and her works of art always reflected a keen observation of nature and revealed a mastery of technique."
