Nulle vocation allégorique ou moralisatrice dans cette composition qui invite à la délectation, à apprécier chaque pétale de fleur, à saliver devant l’apparente suavité des fruits. La composition est dominée par des tons de vermillon, blanc et vert canard se détachant sur un original fond boisé. Ayant grandi à Amsterdam au tournant des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, Jacob van Huysum a assisté à l’apogée du goût hollandais pour les fleurs et leur collection. Les amateurs atteignirent en effet au début du XVIIIe siècle la maturité d’un goût développé tout au long du XVIIe siècle, chaque génération voyant s’améliorer les croisements et la sélection des fleurs. Cette étude approfondie des fleurs, tant héritée de son père Justus que de son frère Jan, se poursuit après l’installation de Jacob van Huysum à Londres en 1721. Il y illustrera notamment deux ouvrages de botanique tout en peignant pour de prestigieux commanditaires comme Robert et Horace Walpole. Si son frère peignit également portraits, paysages et scènes de genre, Jacob van Huysum se démarqua en se concentrant exclusivement sur la peinture de fleurs. Le format, la fraicheur des coloris, et le raffinement de la composition font de notre tableau l’un des chefs d’œuvre de l’artiste.
