Signed in pen and grey ink lower right: "Jan Van Huysum". ca. 1730. 10" x 11 1/4" sheet, 18 1/2" x 21 1/2" framed. ---------- The best-loved and most accomplished Dutch flower artist of his time. Jan van Huysum was the true celebrity of eighteenth-century Dutch flower painting. He achieved remarkable and enduring success, while keeping his life and working methods shrouded in enticing mystery. His paintings were eagerly sought after by Royal houses and eminent collectors all over Europe, and his great popularity extended beyond his own day. When Catherine the Great sought to purchase Sir Robert Walpoles art collection thirty years after van Huysums death, that great collectors paintings by van Huysum were valued at double the price of his Rembrandts. Van Huysum was born in Amsterdam, into a family of painters. But rather than attach himself to the family studio, which turned out a steady stream of decorative flower pieces for the local market, Jan struck out on his own, attaining tremendous success, while jealously guarding his privacy. He rarely accepted pupils, concentrating exclusively on his ornate, highly detailed and remarkably realistic compositions. Jan traveled to Haarlem every summer to examine the freshest and widest array of decorative blossoms for his painstakingly faithful depictions. This elegant and lovely painting showcases van Huysums greatest talents.

Signed and dated lower centre: Par van Huysum fecit 1726 Van Huysum's meticulously executed floral pieces testify to his unsurpassed artistic skill, which brought him fame and considerable wealth. His Arcadian landscapes are executed with the same mastery and care as his floral still lifes, but are comparatively rarer. In this beautiful drawing, Van Huysum still follows the French landscape painting tradition of Poussin, Lorrain and Dughet. However, the influence of French classicism is already less pronounced here, as it is in the works of Van Huysum's contemporary Isaac de Moucheron. This reflects a development that can also be observed in the works of other Dutch landscape painters of the late 17th century.

(1682 Amsterdam - 1749 ebenda) Nachfolger Blumenstillleben mit Insekten in einer Steinnische Auf einer steinernen Konsole in Bogennische arrangierter, opulenter Strauß aus verschiedenen duftig und detailreich geschilderten Frühlings- und Sommerblumen, umschwärmt von Insekten wie Bienen, Fliegen, Ameisen, Schmetterlingen sowie Schnecken. Qualitätvolle, fein lasierend ausgeführte Kopie nach dem verschollenen Ölgemälde auf Holztafel von Jan van Huysum aus dem ehemaligen Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum (heute Bodemuseum) in Berlin (Inv.-Nr. 972B). Bereits zu Lebzeiten wurden van Huysums Werke hoch geschätzt, besonders seine prachtvollen, harmonisch komponierten, durch geschickte Lichtführung hervorgehobenen Blumenstücke, die sich durch außerordentliche Feinheit und Naturtreue auszeichneten. Obwohl der Künstler keine direkten Schüler hatte, fand er durch seinen enormen Erfolg zahlreiche Nachfolger und Nachahmer. Öl/Lwd., doubliert; 79,5 cm x 58,5 cm. Rahmen. Das Gemälde ist vom RKD in Den Haag als "nach Jan van Huijsum" (nach 1720) registriert (RKD Nr. 117874). Signed lower centre: Jan van Huysum Certificate Ingvar Bergström, 6.6.1983. - Confirmed by Dr Fred Meijer, 4.11.2008. Jan van Huysum began his career with landscapes and only turned to still life painting later; it is, however, precisely this genre that made him known far beyond Holland as one of the best flower painters of his time. Still lifes were and still are the most sought-after and therefore most expensive paintings by this artist. The present signed painting has been confirmed by Ingvar Bergström and Fred Meijer to be a work by Jan van Huysum. Fred Meijer suggests a date of around 1707, as it is still reminiscent of the still lifes by his father Justus van Huysum the Elder. An almost identical but somewhat larger composition by the latter has survived in the RKD database. In this early still life, Jan van Huysum is still under the influence of his father but is on the way to achieving the independent artistic identity that would become so distinctive in his later paintings.

In leichter Untersicht zeigt der Künstler eine prächtige Blumenvase mit Rosen, Tulpen, Nelken und weiteren Blüten und Ranken. Auf der nur durch einen horizontalen Strich angedeuteten Plinthe sitzt rechts ein Papagei, gerahmt von einem Pfirsich und Trauben, und knabbert an einer der Ranken. Das Vogelmotiv wird durch zwei Vögel im Flug links über dem Strauß wieder aufgenommen. Die Komposition, die wohl als Vorzeichnung für ein Gemälde, das an einem höheren Standpunkt aufgehängt werden sollte, gedacht war, besticht durch ihre Leichtigkeit bei gleichzeitiger Fülle und Üppigkeit an Details. Van Huysum, der sich erst recht spät den Blumenstilleben zuwandte, erlangte in diesem Sujet eine bis dahin ungeahnte Meisterschaft.

Jan Van Huysum - PAIR: A Fruit Piece & A Flower Piece

This pair of sumptuous, hand-colored mezzotint engravings were done by Richard Earlom (1743-1822) after the original art of Jan Van Huysom (1682-1749). It was published in London by John Boydell in 1781. Jan Van Huysum was the "last of the great Dutch masters" (Mithcell) "It is the fate of some painters to be celebrated in their lifetime only and to be disregarded by later generations... Other painters pass their lives in obscurity only to be acclaimed by a succeeding century. A few, a very few, achieve a fame which is universal in their own day, never falters, and remains unchanged today. Jan van Huysum is among them. To Weyerman...Van Huysum was the 'phoenix of Flower Painters.' To Vertue, writing of six paintings he saw in an English collection in the 1740s, they were 'the most inimitable pictures that were ever seen.' In Van Huysum's lifetime the Kings of Poland and Prussia, the Elector of Saxony, Prince William of Hesse, the Dukes of Orleans and Mecklenburg, and Sir Robert Walpole were eager patrons. When Catherine the Great, thirty years after Van Huysum's death, wanted to buy the Walpole Collection, the greatest in England, a valuation was made by Benjamin West...on the evidence of saleroom results at the time he placed a fair valuation of 1200 pounds on the pair of Van Huysums...In the nineteenth century the Rothschilds and others were avid collectors...Today the very finest Van Huysums are not available...The only fair way to judge an artist is by assessing his success in what he set out to achieve. By such a yardstick Van Huysum is supremely successful... "Jan, born at Amsterdam in 1682, was the eldest son and pupil of Justus van Huysum. Justus was the head of a family enterprise...with three younger sons assisting: Justus the younger, Jacob and Michiel. Their large-scale production met the demand for decorative flowerpieces...Jan did not choose to follow his father's example. From his marriage in 1704 until his death in 1749 Jan appears to have stayed in Amsterdam, but independent of the family. He jealously guarded his success...working in strict privacy that none might see the preparation of his pigments nor how he worked...He is said to have worked from the real flower and gone to Haarlem each summer to study specimens...Van Huysum possessed an unerring elegance of composition which enabled him to avoid the inbalance, the over-abundance that others risked...The artist left no word, no indication of how he really painted, no hint of his own philosophy. So the wondrous skills of Jan Van Huysum, the last of the great Dutch masters, leaves us as bemused as those of his predecessors a century and a half earlier." (Peter Mitchell, European Flower Painters, pp. 142-149) Richard Earlom was one of the few engravers technically equipped to do justice to Van Huysum's work. Earlom "succeeded in inducing his father to place him under the tuition of Cipriani, and in 1765 became known to Alderman Boydell, who entertained so high an opinion of the young artist that he employed him to make drawings from the celebrated collection of pictures at Houghton, and now at St. Petersburg, for the engravers to work from. In 1757 he was awarded a premium by the Society of Arts. In the art of mezzotint engraving Earlom was his own instructor. His plates show great technical skill, especially those of flowers after Van Huysum, and are highly valued by the connoisseurs. They were produced in a style of engraving which till then had never been thought capable of representing the delicate texture of flowers... He engraved over sixty plates in mezzotint, among which are The Royal Academy, after Zoffany; Samuel Barrington, after Reynolds; Richard, viscount Fitzwilliam, after Howard; William Henry, duke of Gloucester, after Hamilton; Horatio, lord Nelson, after Beechey; William Pitt, after Dupont; the set of six plates of the Marriage à la Mode, after Hogarth; two flower pieces, after Huysum; Blacksmith's Shop, and the Forge, after Wright." (DNB) John Boydell was a printseller and engraver. He and his nephew, Josiah, created fine engravings in England including scenes from Shakespeare, etchings by Francesco Bartolozzo after paintings by Guercino, and many other old master and landscape works. The also published this pair of mezzotint engravings after Van Huysum. The lower left nomenclature reads: Van Huysom Pinxit Joseph Farington delint. The center nomenclature reads: John Boydell excudit 1778 A Fruit Piece In the Cabinet at Houghton... The lower right nomenclature reads: Richard Earlom Sculpsit.

Blumenstilleben in einer Vase und Papagei. Feder, laviert, auf Bütten. Sign., nicht dat. (um 1720). 27,7 x 16,2 cm. - Unter Glas. - In leichter Untersicht zeigt der Künstler eine prächtige Blumenvase mit Rosen, Tulpen, Nelken und weiteren Blüten und Ranken. Auf der nur durch einen horizontalen Strich angedeuteten Plinthe sitzt rechts ein Papagei, gerahmt von einem Pfirsich und Trauben, und knabbert an einer der Ranken. Das Vogelmotiv wird durch zwei Vögel im Flug links über dem Strauß wieder aufgenommen. Die Komposition, die wohl als Vorzeichnung für ein Gemälde, das an einem höheren Standpunkt aufgehängt werden sollte, gedacht war, besticht durch ihre Leichtigkeit bei gleichzeitiger Fülle und Üppigkeit an Details. Van Huysum, der sich erst recht spät den Blumenstilleben zuwandte, erlangte in diesem Sujet eine bis dahin ungeahnte Meisterschaft.
