    Vojtech Albert Hynais

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

(Vienna 1854–1925 Prague) Portrait of the Artist’s Family, 1874, oil on canvas, 111 x 158.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria. Catalogued and illustrated in: Marie Mzykova, Hynais, Prague 2025, p. 35. Vojtech Albert Hynais came from a Czech family and began his artistic training at the age of sixteen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under August Eisenmenger (1830–1907). From 1873 he studied in the class of Anselm Feuerbach (1829–1880), who held the young artist in high esteem and actively supported him. Feuerbach strongly advocated for Hynais’s application for an Italian travel scholarship, which was subsequently granted. In 1874, Hynais departed for Italy together with Janez Šubic (1850–1889), studying in Venice, Florence, and Rome between 1874 and 1875 and again in 1877. His formative travels concluded in Paris in 1878, undertaken on the recommendation of the painter Jaroslav Čermák (1831–1878). Prior to this extensive period of study abroad, Hynais painted in Vienna a family portrait depicting his parents and brothers during a visit to their relatives. This portrait was mentioned by Feuerbach in a letter to the young artist dated 13 July 1874. The present lot is this mentioned portrait, ranking among the earliest works of the painter. Prominently positioned at the centre of the composition is the artist’s mother, Anna Hynais, née Ždárská, seated in a chair. She is surrounded by her three sons—Vojtech, Cyrill, and Jan—with the standing boy at the right likely representing her eldest son, the painter, Vojtech himself. In the background to the left, leaning on his arm, appears her husband. The central placement of the mother suggests the special bond between them, a connection further emphasized in the intimate portrait of her painted by the artist in 1883 (see National Gallery in Prague, inv. no. O 4947).

    Dec. 07, 2023

    VOJTĚCH HYNAIS 1854 - 1925 - PUTTO WITH WINGS

    Est: -

Hynais worked as a portraitist and painter of figural scenes in a suggestive presentation of salon naturalism and luminism, a painting concept based on the color expression of light in the picture with changes of local colors with a strong academic handwriting. He was among the main representatives of the "generation of the National Theatre". The personality of Vojtěch Hynais was central and key here, as he formed a bridge between the Parisian art world and the Czech scene. Technique: indian ink, gouache, Signed: sign. lower right: Hynais

Hynais worked as a portraitist and painter of figural scenes in a suggestive presentation of salon naturalism and luminism, a painting concept based on the color expression of light in a picture with changes in local colors. Painter's virtuosity, veristic naturalism and colorful execution are also manifested in the portrait of a girl from Paris, where he outlined the figure of a girl with silky chestnut hair and rosy cheeks in soft pastel tones on a light blue background. The work is an excellent example of Hynais' luminism understood in the intentions of the end and turn of the 19th century. Technique: Pastel, paper, Signed: Lower left "V Hynais"

VOJTECH HYNAIS (1854-1925): AT THE CONFESSIONAL

    Est: -

1890s 49.5 x 38 cm (h x w) Oil on canvas mounted to cardboard. Signed lower left: "VHynais". According to the expert opinion prepared by PhDr. Nadezda Blazicková-Horová, “Typical of its genre, At the Confessional is a very appealing work by Vojtech Hynais that likely dates from the 1890s. Hynais worked as a portrait artist and painter of figurative scenes in the suggestive rendition of salon naturalism and luminism, in a painterly concept based on the colorful expression of light in the painting and transformations in local colors. The painterly virtuosity, verismo naturalism, and color execution of two beautiful women kneeling before the confessional in a soft, watercolor-like tone against a blue background, is an excellent example of Hynais’ luminism understood in the limits of the late 19th century. The scene is also interesting for its taunting content: one of the young woman is kissing the hand of the rotund, roguishly smiling confessor. The subject is a departure from Hynais’ allegorical, religious or historical subjects that are predominant in his work. On clear display in At the Confessional are Hynais’ typical formal perfection and cultivation, which were unparalleled on the Czech art scene, as well as his excellent draftsmanship.” Starting price: 220 000 CZK (8 627 EUR)
