Jacques Innocenti (French, 1926-1958). Glazed ceramic vase, n.d. Hand-signed "Innocenti" on underside of base. A glazed red clay pitcher by Jacques Innocenti, its curvaceous form animated by a bird rendered in fluid engobe across the swelling body, the creature's plumage suggested through incised lines and loose brushwork in grey-white, ochre, and warm brown against the warm terracotta ground. The pitcher form itself participates in the image: the sinuous waist becomes the bird's body, the spout its beak, the handle a wing or tail, so that vessel and creature are inextricably merged in the manner that distinguished Innocenti's most inventive work from mere decorated pottery. Size: 7.5" W x 13" H x 7" D (19.1 cm W x 33.0 cm H x 17.8 cm D) The base bears his hand-painted signature, "INNOCENTI," in the characteristically casual script found on his Vallauris production, confirming this as an autograph work from the Grand Chene years. That Innocenti could invest a functional jug with this degree of wit and draftsmanly confidence, handling the engobe with the ease of someone as comfortable with a brush as with a throwing wheel, places this piece squarely among the objects that have steadily attracted collector attention since his death in 1958 rendered his output permanently finite. About the artist: Born in Paris in 1926, Jacques Innocenti studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs from 1946 to 1948, where he met his wife and collaborator Nydia. The couple married in 1949 and relocated to Vallauris, where Innocenti reunited with his ceramicist parents, Odette Gourju and Lyuba Naumovitch, training in their workshop, the Grand Chene, before establishing his own studio in the early 1950s. Vallauris in those years was the most charged creative atmosphere in postwar French ceramics, animated in no small part by Picasso, whose presence shaped the ambitions of every serious potter in the region. Innocenti absorbed that influence while developing a distinctly hedonistic vision of his own, working primarily in the local red clay and deploying slip techniques with exceptional command of color. His subjects were warmly sensual: full-figured female bathers, animal bestiaries, portraits, and still lifes set within architectural frameworks, rendered with a fluency that made his utilitarian wares as formally satisfying as his exhibition pieces. Recognition came quickly. Between 1953 and 1957 he exhibited regularly at the Nerolium in Vallauris and participated in international exhibitions in Le Havre, Cannes (where he won a silver medal), Caracas, and the 1955 Triennale di Milano. His production reached Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Macy's in New York. He died in 1958 at thirty-two, a disappearance sudden enough to lend his brief body of work the particular luster of the unfinished.
