Wilson Henry Irvine Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1869 - d. 1936

At the turn of the century, noted American Impressionist Wilson Henry Irvine studied art formally and exhibited landscapes in group shows at The Art Institute of Chicago and elsewhere in the area. By 1911, Irvine was an important presence in Chicago art circles, becoming president of the Chicago Society of Artists and later the chairman of the Chicago Commission for the Encouragement of Local Art. During this period, Irvine was spending his summers painting in the Northeast, mainly in Connecticut. In 1918, he moved to Connecticut permanently, becoming a highly active member of the renowned Old Lyme art colony and a very successful artist. As Irvine became more and more engaged in landscape painting, he traveled frequently throughout the United States and Europe in search of new painting sites. Irvine spent the winter of 1927-28 in New Orleans, when the work being offered was painted. He told a journalist that the reason he had come to New Orleans was that twenty-five years ago he had a passion for reading George W. Cable and never forgot. The reporter wrote that Irvine "had a mild word of praise for the renovated courts of the quarter, but kept his unstinted encomium for the old grey places where the walls are decaying." Irvine told the journalist that he intended to return to New Orleans every winter. However, that visit during the winter of 1927-28 was his only trip. The paintings Irvine made during that visit are lovely depictions of the French Quarter and rural environs surrounding New Orleans that rarely surface in the marketplace.

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Wilson Henry Irvine (1869-1936) American, Oil on Board. Titled "St. Ives". Lent by Mrs. Jan Irvine. Depicts a large house near the water. Small child to the right. Overall Size: 19 X 23 in. Sight Size: 11 1/4 x 15 1/2 in. #8004 A prolific Impressionist with a penchant for atmospheric scenes, Illinois native Wilson Irvine began his career in Chicago as an airbrush artist. His expertise led to his eventual employment with the newly founded Chicago Portrait Company, where he retouched photographs to achieve highly realistic results. It was not until 1895 that Irvine enrolled in evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, studying first with the academically trained Charles E. Boutwood and later with the illustrator Walter M. Clute. Beginning in 1900, Irvine’s landscape paintings appeared in forty-one exhibitions hosted by the Art Institute, and soon his work was seen at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery, and the National Academy of Design. Irvine was awarded a silver medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Also in 1895, Irvine and a group of fellow artists founded the Palette and Chisel Club of Chicago. Members met on Sunday mornings at the studio of noted sculptor Lorado Taft to draw from the model during daylight hours. Irvine served first as the treasurer and then as president of the club, regularly participating in the group’s exhibitions, which were held at the art galleries of Marshall Field’s eponymous department store. In 1907, Irvine was one of the founders of the Cliff Dwellers Club, spearheaded by noted author Hamlin Garland. He was also active in the Artists’ Guild, which merged into the Arts Club, and the Chicago Watercolor Club. Irvine traveled to France in 1908, where he painted scenes in Brittany at Pont-Aven and St. Malo—works that are decidedly impressionistic and demonstrate a keen interest in the effects of light and a tendency toward color contrasts. In 1914, Irvine began to spend time in Connecticut, the home of several Impressionist art colonies. After three summers in Hamburg, Irvine purchased a hillside property there in 1918 and made it his primary residence until his death. Hamburg is the town center of Lyme, located inland about five miles from Old Lyme, where a distinguished group of painters had been gathering since the late 1890s. By the time Irvine arrived in the area, Impressionism and plein air painting were well established. That Irvine had achieved considerable success at this point in his career is documented by a hefty exhibition schedule. He was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1926, where he exhibited watercolors every year from 1921 to 1936. Irvine traveled increasingly in his middle age. In 1923, he spent ten months abroad, painting in Cornwall, Wales, and on the Outer Hebrides; he also visited London, Glasgow, Paris, Giverny, Avignon, and traveled through Italy. In North America, he ventured to Quebec, New Orleans, Virginia, and Vermont, and then returned to Europe in 1929, going to Paris, Marseille, and various places in Spain. He was in Charleston, South Carolina, three years later. The extent of Irvine’s travels suggests a certain restlessness, which is also underscored by the artist’s experimentation with several techniques and media, including monoprints and aquaprints. He also started viewing his subjects through a prism, which resulted in a halo effect around the edges of objects revealing green tones against a light background, and red ones against a dark one; the optical results have been equated to color printing when slightly off-register. These unique technical investigations may have been Irvine’s response to the rise of modernism. Nevertheless, he remained an avowed and prolific Impressionist until his death in 1936. Examples of Irvine’s work can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Florence Griswold Museum, among other institutions. (Bio from The Johnson Collection, Spartanburg, South Carolina). Wilson Henry Irvine (American, 1869-1936), "Long Wharf and Tea Wharf, Boston Harbor"

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Oil on canvas. Signed Irvine (lower right). Catalogue Note: Long Wharf and Tea Wharf, Boston Harbor is an exceptional work by Irvine. This painting is one of the more sophisticated and delicately rendered works we have come across by the artist. The painting is of the T and Long Wharfs in the Boston Harbor. The T-wharf on the left-hand side of the moored New England fishing schooners is where the fish auctions were held. Upon the arrival and unloading of the fishermen's catch the bell tower would ring announcing that the fish auctions were about to commence. The pier on the right-hand side of the painting is Long Wharf Irvine once declared that his favorite type of day was to capture the hazy light. Those still, calm and peculiarly unusual days of even light that come with lazy summer days. This is surely an example of it. Irvine began summering in OId Lyme in 1914. We feel that this is an early work dating from his earliest excursions to the area. It is potentially a view of Hambourg Cove where he often did his harbor views. Irvine was born in Illinois and as a young man moved to Chicago, which is when he developed his interest in art. It was during this early period that he set upon depicting rural landscapes. It wasn't until Irvine married and had traveled to Europe and then returned that he settled in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He is considered one of the masters of American Impressionist landscape painting. People were never important to Irvine and it is very rare to ever see a figure incorporated into his landscapes. Instead, his pictures are personal and are meant to create a view and world for the viewer alone. Irvine was a very experimental painter who was always trying to find new ways to interpret what he saw before him. At one point, he developed a technique that he termed "prismatic". It was based upon the same idea as looking through a glass prism, that affects what light does to the edge of what is being looked at.
