Eugène Isabey was the pupil of the miniature painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey. The artist made a successful debut in 1824 at the Paris Salon. Until 1878, the artist exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Berlin Academy Exhibitions, the 1873 Vienna World's Fair, and the shows of the Munich Glaspalast. Study trips led him to England, Normandy, and Brittany. He worked as a court painter for Louis Philippe. The artist was active as a landscape, marine, and genre painter.

DIE JAGDPARTIE Öl auf Leinwand. 21,3 x 171,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert “(18)76“. In ornamental reliefiertem und vergoldetem Rahmen. Panoramaansicht mit weitem Tal, zu dessen Seiten eine Jagdgesellschaft im Begriff ist zu schießen. Ausführung in elegantem, doch flottem Pinselduktus, bei genauer Beobachtung der Lichtverhältnisse und mit schöner frischer Farbigkeit. Isabey wurde in Paris geboren und war der Sohn des Miniaturenmalers Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767 – 1855). Er spezialisierte sich auf romantische Landschaften, Marinemalerei und historische Szenen. Besonders bekannt wurde er für seine dramatischen Darstellungen von Sturm- und Hafenszenen sowie für seine stimmungsvollen Küstenbilder. Seine Werke zeigen einen starken Einfluss der Romantik und zeichnen sich durch eine lebendige Farbgebung und ausgeprägte atmosphärische Effekte aus. Isabey war zudem ein geschätzter Lehrer und beeinflusste zahlreiche Künstler seiner Zeit. Provenienz: Daniel Weil, Paris. DIE NEUEINFÜHRUNG Öl auf Leinwand, im Hochoval. 47,3 x 39,2 cm. Rechts unten auf Steinplatte signiert und datiert „E. Isabey 1852“. Verso Aufkleber der Robert Noortman Gallery in Maastricht mit Künstlernennung und Betitelung „La Nouvelle Portee“. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. In einer Gartenanlage mit Bäumen und teils blühenden Sträuchern, neben einer steinernen Brüstung und einem kleineren Sockel mit flachem Korb voller Blüten, steht eine junge Frau in eleganter Kleidung. Sie hält vor ihrer Brust zwei junge Welpen und blickt seitlich auf den Boden hinab, auf dem wohl die Mutter der beiden Hunde, ein Cocker Spaniel, steht. Links von der Frau streckt sich ein Mädchen in langem, gelb-gold glänzendem Kleid nach oben, um die Neuankömmlinge zu berühren und zu streicheln. Der französische Künstler malte zunächst Küsten und Schiffe der Bretagne und der Normandie. Ab 1844 schuf der in Paris lebende Isabey auch elegante Portraits und erzählende historische Szenen, deren kostbare Kleidung und Utensilien dem verschwenderischen Geschmack des Second Empire entsprachen. Isabey's approach was highly influential on the work of his students, who included Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) and Johan Jongkind (1819-1891). The present composition recalls a similar scene by Isabey which sold at Bonhams, London, on 21 April 2021, lot 35 (£2,805).

Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey, attr., Fischkutter im flachen Wasser liegender Kahn mit eingezogenem Segel vor der Kulisse einer kleinen Stadt, lavierte Tusche auf Papier, um 1880, auf der Rückseite Zuschreibung "Isabey", auf Unterlagekarton weitere Zuschreibung "Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey/Paris 1804-1886", stockfleckig und lichtrandig, hinter Passepartout geheftet, Blattmaße ca. 36 x 30 cm. Künstlerinfo: eigentlich Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey, frz. Landschafts-, Marine- und Genremaler sowie Lithograph und Holzschneider (1803 Paris bis 1886 Montévrain/Seine-et-Marne), Sohn und Schüler des Miniaturmalers, Zeichners und Lithographen Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855), zunächst Begeisterung für das Seefahrerhandwerk, in Le Havre, im Angesicht des Meeres, Hinwendung zur Marinemalerei, debütierte 1824 im Pariser Salon und erhielt 1. Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey, attr., Fischkutter A boat lying in shallow water with a retracted sail in front of a small town, washed India ink on paper, around 1880, inscribed "Isabey" on the reverse, further inscription "Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey/Paris 1804-1886" on backing card, foxing and light-stained, stapled behind passepartout, sheet dimensions approx. 36 x 30 cm. Artist information: actually Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey, French landscape, marine and genre painter as well as lithographer and wood engraver (1803 Paris to 1886 Montévrain/Seine-et-Marne), son and pupil of the miniature painter, draughtsman and lithographer Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855), initially enthusiastic about seafaring, in Le Havre, in the face of the sea, turned to marine painting, made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1824 and received 1st medal. Derwies acquired it at the auction of the famous Berlin collection of Adolf Lieberman von Wahlenhorf (1829-1893) at Hôtel Drouot in Paris on May 8-9, 1876 (lot 45). The painting was kept in Derwies 's mansion in St. Petersburg (Angliyskaya Naberezhnaya 34 [English Embankment 34]) and was published in the catalogue 'Galerie Serge Von Derwies' in 1904. In 1906, Sergey Pavlovich left Russia and placed his collection up for sale. this present painting was auctioned at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris (Galeries Georges Petit, 15 November 1906, lot 20). The present painting holds distinct museum significance. Sergey Pavlovich Derwies (1863-1943) was an entrepreneur and patron. He was the son of P.G. Derwies, a prominent concessionaire and railway builder. His childhood was spent at his father's villa, 'Valrose,' in Nice. He studied at the legal and historical-philological faculties of St. Petersburg University. From 1888, he served as the chairman of the board of the Russian Musical Society. He was one of the founders of the Russian Trade and Industrial Bank (1889). From 1895 to 1900, he held special assignments in the Ministry of Justice and, in 1901, moved to the Ministry of Finance. After the 1905 revolution, he decided to leave Russia, sold off his Russian possessions and settled in the Villa Mediterranee in Cannes.
