William Henry Jackson was born in upstate New York in 1843. At the age of 10, he began to show an interest in painting, and by the time he was 15, William Henry Jackson's photography career was well underway. Even though he had a well-paying job at an art gallery, he decided to travel out West to Utah where the photography by William Henry Jackson focused on landscapes, people, and towns.

After joining an expedition, he captured the scenery of Wyoming using the wet plate method, which could take up to 20 minutes of development time per photograph. William Henry Jackson's paintings and photographs depict the iconic Western territories, especially the Oregon Trail, Yellowstone National Park, and Wind Cave mountains. The value of William Henry Jackson's photographs rise over time as modern America continues her love affair with the Old West. William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was one of the best-known early photographers of the American West. He went west in 1866, and with his brother Edward established his first studio in Omaha in 1867. The business was re-launched under his own name in 1870; he later relocated to Denver. The British museum holds another example of this image on a Jackson Brothers mount, with a caption describing the sitter as a "Pawnee scout" in 1868. The Museum of Nebraska Art also has an example captioned "Pawnee Indian."

    This is the earliest known mammoth plate photograph of the Crow Indian Agency on the Yellowstone River in Montana Territory taken by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) for the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories, the Hayden Survey Expedition of 1871. The Fort Laramie Indian Treaty of 1868 closed travel on the Bozeman Trail and the Yellowstone Valley as well as stipulated a new agency for the Crow. The first Crow Agency was thus built about eight miles east of present-day Livingston, Montana in fall of 1869, named Fort E.S. Parker or Fort Parker, and also known as the Mission Agency by some Crow. Within a year of the fort’s completion, Professor Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden / F.V. Hayden (1829-1887) led America’s first federally funded geological survey into the Yellowstone region, which included painter Thomas Moran and famous photographer William Henry Jackson, and at the steps of this fort. On October 30, 1872, only a year from when this image was taken, the agency was completely destroyed by fire. Indian Agents L.M. Black (Bozeman businessman and trader), Major E.M. Camp, Fellows David Pease, and Dexter Clapp were based at Fort Parker, which, following the fire was temporarily replaced by buildings made of adobe (since timber was becoming scarce) and eventually moved to the Rosebud on Butcher Creek near present day Absarokee, Montana to be abandoned in 1875. This is a mammoth plate albumen photograph circa 1871 and is on the original mounting which is marked, “W. H. JACKSON PHOTO. / DEPT. OF THE INTERIOR, U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE TERRITORIES. / PROF. F. V. HAYDEN IN CHARGE.”, as well as hand written in the lower left corner, “Crow Agency on the Yellowstone – Montana" possibly in Jackon’s hand. There is a thin gilt gold border surrounding the photo. The back is handwritten in pencil, “Crow Agency on the Yellowstone, Near (Mission Creek) Shield’s River. Destroyed by Fire. Oct. 30, 1872. Photo taken in 1871 BAE Bulletin 83. Ft. Parker built in 1869 Fellows, Pease & Dexter Clapp were agents. In 1875 moved to the Rosebud on Butcher Creek.” The photograph prominently shows the square-hewn timber logs, shingle roof with storehouses as well as two bastions that served as guard towers. Think of the rarity of this image, the Fort only existed from the end of the year 1869 to being destroyed in 1872. The Hayden Expedition, where this photo was taken by William Henry Jackson in 1871, was instrumental in convincing Congress in establishing Yellowstone as the first U.S. National Park, aided by Jackson’s stunning large-format photographs such as this piece.

    JACKSON, William Henry (1843-1942), photographer. Three photographs of Bannock and Pawnee dwellings from the Hayden Expedition. Ca 1870s. 2 albumen photographs, both 8 1/8 x 6 1/2 in. on original 14 x 11 in. Hayden Survey mounts with credit to W. H. Jackson. The first bears pencil inscription directly below image reading, "BANNOCKS," and features a large, partly covered tipi and a smaller fully covered tipi with a few female subjects seated among the strewn materials and supplies scattered on the ground. A couple of dogs also appear to the viewer's right. The second, numbered in the negative "324," bears pencil inscription on the image itself, reading "PAWNEE EARTH LODGES" and another to lower margin reading "Oklahoma." Centrally featured is a square tunnel-like opening to an earthen lodge built into a mound, with long poles leaning toward the entry structure on either side and meeting above the roof. A family group including two adults and several children stand just outside of the entry. Other subjects can be seen sitting atop earthen mounds in the background into which other such structures are built. 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. albumen photograph on 11 x 10 3/8 in. mount lacking photographer's credit or imprint but known to have been taken by him. Numbered "523" in the negative and with inked inscription to mount recto reading "In Pawnee Village, Nebraska. 1876. Frame of Sticks, Covering of Earth." Featured are the same or similar earthen lodges built into mounds with tunnel-like openings, viewed from a different angle. The camera captures the backs of dozens of Pawnee subjects seated and standing among the mounds and structures. Another example of this image curated by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art titles it "Pawnee Village" and credits the capture to William Henry Jackson.     Featured in this lot is this original photo of Leadville, Colorado taken from Carbonate Hill in the 1880s by prominent photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). William Henry Jackson was a pioneering American photographer, most renowned for his documentation of the American West, particularly his work with the Hayden Survey. His photographs played a crucial role in establishing Yellowstone National Park and influencing public perception of the West. Leadville was founded in 1877 by mine owners Horace Tabor and August Meyer at the start of the Colorado Silver Boom. Tabor's house was also built in 1877, at 116 E. 5th Street. The town was built on desolate flat land below the tree line. Leadville was also home to Doc Holiday, who lived there for five years and was known to gamble a lot in the town. It shows the town of Leadville from an almost birds eye view as the photo was taken from Carbonate Hill. Leadville was, at one point, the highest elevation mining camp in the world and was the highest in the United States. Many houses and buildings can be seen, while a large lumber building is seen in the foreground near the photographer. The bottom of the photograph is marked reading, "1202. Leadville From Carbonate Hill.". It shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 5" L x 8" W and weighs under 6 ounces.

    This is the earliest known mammoth plate photograph of the Crow Indian Agency on the Yellowstone River in Montana Territory taken by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) for the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories, the Hayden Survey Expedition of 1871. The Fort Laramie Indian Treaty of 1868 closed travel on the Bozeman Trail and the Yellowstone Valley as well as stipulated a new agency for the Crow. The first Crow Agency was thus built about eight miles east of present-day Livingston, Montana in fall of 1869, named Fort E.S. Parker or Fort Parker, and also known as the Mission Agency by some Crow. Within a year of the fort’s completion, Professor Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden / F.V. Hayden (1829-1887) led America’s first federally funded geological survey into the Yellowstone region, which included painter Thomas Moran and famous photographer William Henry Jackson, and at the steps of this fort. On October 30, 1872, only a year from when this image was taken, the agency was completely destroyed by fire. Indian Agents L.M. Black (Bozeman businessman and trader), Major E.M. Camp, Fellows David Pease, and Dexter Clapp were based at Fort Parker, which, following the fire was temporarily replaced by buildings made of adobe (since timber was becoming scarce) and eventually moved to the Rosebud on Butcher Creek near present day Absarokee, Montana to be abandoned in 1875. This is a mammoth plate albumen photograph circa 1871 and is on the original mounting which is marked, “W. H. JACKSON PHOTO. / DEPT. OF THE INTERIOR, U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE TERRITORIES. / PROF. F. V. HAYDEN IN CHARGE.”, as well as hand written in the lower left corner, “Crow Agency on the Yellowstone – Montana" possibly in Jackon’s hand. There is a thin gilt gold border surrounding the photo. The back is handwritten in pencil, “Crow Agency on the Yellowstone, Near (Mission Creek) Shield’s River. Destroyed by Fire. Oct. 30, 1872. Photo taken in 1871 BAE Bulletin 83. Ft. Parker built in 1869 Fellows, Pease & Dexter Clapp were agents. In 1875 moved to the Rosebud on Butcher Creek.” The photograph prominently shows the square-hewn timber logs, shingle roof with storehouses as well as two bastions that served as guard towers. Outside of the agency approx. Nine individuals pose for the image, no doubt one of these men being the fort’s Agent. In the background the towering Montana mountains. The piece is well kept with fine detail, well-preserved strong tones, no apparent major damages and the original well kept photographers mounting, some corner wear and small staining on mount. This mammoth plate photograph mounting measures 13 7/8-inches by 10 7/8-inches and the visible photo area is 7 3/8-inches by 5 ¼-inches. Think of the rarity of this image, the Fort only existed from the end of the year 1869 to being destroyed in 1872. The Hayden Expedition, where this photo was taken by William Henry Jackson in 1871, was instrumental in convincing Congress in establishing Yellowstone as the first U.S. National Park, aided by Jackson’s stunning large-format photographs such as this piece.

Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount of Thunder Hawk, a signer of the Sioux Treaty of 1865 at Fort Sully, Dakota Territory. Uncredited, but known to have been taken by William Henry Jackson. Manuscript identification in lower margin, "Thunder Hawk." Additional notation on verso, "Oncpapa, Our Indian Friends, Fort Sully, 1870." Provenance: Acquired from an October 2024 auction containing material identified to General David Sloane Stanley (1828-1902) (consignor notes). After graduating from West Point in 1852, Stanley was assigned to frontier duty. He was stationed at various forts in the Dakota Territory, Indian Territory, and Kansas, where he aided in quelling disturbances at the Kansas border in 1856. When the Civil War began, he was given command of a division in the Western Theater, participating in numerous battles over the next three years. He was wounded in the neck at the Battle of Franklin and later received the Medal of Honor for his actions (November 1864). Following the Civil War, Stanley was appointed colonel of the 22nd US Infantry, primarily serving in the Dakota Territory until 1874. He was the Commanding Officer at Fort Sully, Dakota Territory, from 1867-1873, so it is entirely possible that the photograph offered here was inscribed in Stanley's hand. Following his time at Fort Sully, Stanley commanded the Yellowstone expedition of 1873, encouraging settlement in the area. This lot is located in Cincinnati.

    Included in this lot: Arkansas Canon (Canyon), Rocky Mountains Agramonte Gorge, Rocky Mountains Description of the work: This historic albumen photograph is by William H. Jackson, the famed western photographer. Most of the photographs are of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, and Utah and were printed circa 1885. Many were taken along the line of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Rail Road. Each photograph is mounted on to large grey cards, many have period calligraphic captions in red ink. A few images, are signed in the negative by J. Young & Co. of Salt Lake City. William H. Jackson (1843-1942) began his career in photograph in 1858 working in retouching in a studio in Troy, New York. He served in the Union Army in the 1860s, but moved to Nebraska in 1867 where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad. This work led him to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team where he photographed much of the West including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. Jackson was inspired by Thomas Moran, C. R. Savage and A. J. Russell. He became the first to photograph many high mountain peaks, valleys and western scenes in a more detailed and topographic style. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West both for his own purposes and on behalf of various railroads. The present image date to Jackson's time in Denver. Photographs from this era by Jackson and others "took on added significance in 1890 when the census revealed that the frontier had vanished -- Americans had settled virtually everywhere in the transcontinental realm. All that remained of the Old West -- that untamed expanse inhabited only by free-roaming Indian tribes, audacious mountain men, and wild animals -- were the dusty memoirs of those who had lived during that epic era and the photos of William Henry Jackson" (Waitley).

Provenance The Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl According to the National Park Service: "To capture Tower Falls using wet plate photography, Jackson selected the location of his camera at the base of the falls in advance, and then set up his dark box at the top of the canyon, as the climb down would have been too treacherous to risk transporting the delicate chemicals and box of glass plates. He then had to quickly scale the canyon to prepare the glass plate, climb down the canyon to take the photograph, and then climb back up to fix the negative in the dark box, all before the wet plate dried. Jackson described the feat as one of his crowning photographic achievements."
