LOTTE JACOBI (1896-1990) Albert Einstein, Princeton, NJ. 1938; printed 1970s. Silver print, the image measuring 13½x10⅛ inches (34.3x25.7 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Jacobi's signature in pencil on recto. Taken by Lotte Jacobi at Einstein's request for a 1938 Life magazine feature but then rejected by the magazine, this image of Einstein is one of the most recognized photographs of the German physicist. It was first exhibited in 1942 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the collective show, "A Comparative Exhibition of Twentieth-Century Portraits." Einstein and Jacobi had known each other previously in their native Germany, from which both were forced to flee from the Nazi regime - Einstein in 1933 and Jacobi in 1935. The two collaborated in setting up the photograph, which was taken in a relaxed setting in Einstein's home in Princeton, NJ, together deciding that Einstein should appear in his leather jacket - a distinctive feature of this portrait, setting it apart from the many other portraits made of him throughout his life. Though this photograph was not chosen by Life's photo editors, who apparently thought posing Einstein in a leather jacket was not appropriate, Jacobi did have three black and white photos of the physicist appear on the second page of the two-page feature spread on Einstein that ran in the April 11, 1938 edition of the magazine. Photographer's Photogenics /copyright stamp on the verso, hinge-mounted in upper corners to mat. - - Encouraged by Leo Katz, in the early 1940s Lotte Jacobi began experimenting with making photographs without a camera. It was Katz who coined the term "Photogenics" for these renditions of paths of light. To him these images were true "original" art objects, devoid of the reproducible nature of normal photographs. Jacobi's photogenics follow the new concepts in the visual arts of the time. They were included in such avantgarde exhibitions as In and Out of Focus in 1948 and Abstraction in Photography in 1951, both at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as in the second Subjektive Fotografie exhibition in 1954, in Saarbrücken. – A few minimal nicks in edges, otherwise in near excellent condition. - - Provenance: Christie's. Jacobi, Lotte (1896-1990) Portrait of Käthe Kollwitz. 1931. Gelatin silver print, signed by Lotte in pencil on lower right of image; 14 x 10 7/8 in. The first woman elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts, Käthe Kollwitz, German printer, painter, and sculptor whose early realist works developed into expressionism. Her most famous pieces address issues of poverty, hunger, and war in the working class, often capturing solemn figures with scratchy, intricate linework. This portrait by Jacobi was taken just before Kollwitz was forced out of the Academy of Arts by the Nazi regime. Her demonstrated support for the Dringender Appell (the Urgent Call for Unity) made her an unpopular figure with the Nazis. Her work was subsequently removed from museums and institutions, excepting her Mother and Child, which was used by the party for propaganda. Lotte Jacobi was a Polish-born portrait photographer and photojournalist known for her dramatic black-and-white images of ordinary subjects and influential artists and thinkers. Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka, Marc Chagall and J.D. Salinger all sat for her. Her portrait of Salinger made famous by the rear panel of the dust jacket of The Catcher in the Rye when it was first published.

[PHOTOGRAPHY]. JACOBI, Lotte (1896-1990), photographer. Portrait of Paul Robeson. 1952 (printed later). 8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photograph (minimal edge wear). Pencil signed lower right by Jacobi. Paul Leroy Robeson (1898-1976) was an American film and stage actor, notably known for his roles as "Joe" in the London production of Show Boat, and as Othello at the Shubert Theatre in 1943, for which he received a Donaldson Award; the run of Othello starring Robeson remained the longest-running production of a Shakespeare play until 2011. He became active in several social justice campaigns and eventually the Civil Rights Movement. Advocating for Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War, Robeson became active in the Council on African Affairs; later, his sympathies for communism and the Soviet Union and his criticisms of United States foreign policy caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He received the Spingarn medal from the NAACP in 1945; his efforts to end Apartheid were posthumously recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1978. Robeson is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the American Theater Hall of Fame; he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Portrait of the writer Walter von Molo (1880-1958). 1930. Vintage gelatin silver print. 22,1 x 16 cm. Photographer's/copyright stamps, number stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso. This portrait of Walter von Molo by Lotte Jacobi is comparable to her portrait of Käthe Kollwitz, which was taken around the same time (1929). Both were members of the Academy of Arts in Berlin (Molo was chairman of the literary section). Until the early 1930s Molo was one of the most popular German authors. During the Third Reich he went into an inner emigration and resigned from all honorary positions.
