          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) Steamship City of Berlin at Sea oil on panel signed and inscribed A. Jacobsen / 257 8 Av. NY, lower right 20 1/2 x 34 3/4 inches. The first record of Jacobsen at this 8th Avenue address is recorded in New York City Directories from 1876: "Jacobsen, Antonio, Artist, 257 Eighth Av." Jacobsen painted another view of this same vessel in 1878, which sold at auction at the Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 1, 2014, as Lot 635. The SS City of Berlin was a British ocean liner that launched from Liverpool on April 29, 1875. She was owned and operated by the Inman Line and made numerous transatlantic crossings between Liverpool and New York, including a record-setting voyage in the fall of 1875, which beat the previously set record by five hours. The City of Berlin was sold to the American Line in 1893 and was subsequently renamed first Berlin, and later Meade. At the time that the American Line owned the vessel, it was the largest seafaring ship of its time. In this capacity, her focus shifted primarily to the Pacific Ocean for much of the early twentieth century before being scrapped in 1921.

She was named for prominent Michigan lumberman Henry B. Smith (1858-1919) and was operated by the Acme Transit Company, a firm primarily engaged in hauling cargoes of iron ore. In November 1913, during the so-called "Big Storm," she went missing on Lake Superior with a full cargo and all hands somewhere north of Marquette, Michigan. The wreck was discovered in 2013 by shipwreck hunters, one hundred years after the Henry B. Smith's disappearance.

Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) Great Lakes Bulk Freighter Myron C. Taylor 1918 oil on board signed, dated, and inscribed Antonio Jacobsen 1918 / 31 Palisade Av. West Hoboken NJ, lower right ship identified, port bow 16 x 36 inches. The Myron C. Taylor was built in River Rouge, Michigan by the Great Lakes Engineering Works. She launched June 15, 1929 and enrolled as part of the Pittsburgh Steamship Co., with a home port in Duluth, Minnesota. In 1967, she was transferred to the United States Steel Great Lakes Fleet, Wilmington, Delaware and depowered for diesel the following year and later renamed Calumet. After sustaining irreparable damage while unloading limestone in Cleveland, Ohio, the Myron C. Taylor was sold for scrap in 2007. Given the timeline, it is possible that the painting was commissioned for the eponymous New York industrialist and diplomat Myron Charles Taylor (1874-1959), rather than as a portrait of the Great Lakes vessel.

Attributed to Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) Clipper Ship L. Schepp in Rough Seas oil on board unsigned 13 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. The L. Schepp, named after a New York manufacturer of chocolate and cocoa, was more commonly referred to as the "Cocoanut King." She was launched at Kennebunkport, Maine in September of 1878, captained by Moses Maling. Twice sold by the 1890s, the L. Schepp remained primarily engaged in trade with San Francisco, before expanding her each to China, Japan, and the East Indies, her outward cargoes mostly comprising case oil. On February 2, 1902, during a voyage from Hong Kong to New York, she ran ashore off the coast of Long Island as a result of a strong westerly gale with intermittent snow. No lives were lost, but the hull of the vessel was badly damaged, and nearly all the cargo was lost after being towed, half full of water, to New York. Condemned and sold, the L. Schepp was converted to a coal barge and renamed White Band. In this capacity, her service continued until 1908. Antonio Jacobsen painted at least two other known views of the L. Schepp, each depicting the ship in heavy weather with damaged rigging. One such iteration, American Ship "L. Schepp" in a Typhoon off Bellona Reef, New Caledonia, nearly twice the size of this painting, was held privately by Bert Kutakof of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii until 1949, when it privately changed hands. The work was offered as Lot 51 in Sotheby's American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture auction in 2003, and later as Lot 747 in Eldred's Americana auction in 2006. The painting offered here has been in the possession of the Fleischmann family since at least 1985 per correspondence with the late Harold Sniffen, Curator Emeritus of the Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia.

An employee of the Marvin Safe Company noticed his drawings and offered him a job decorating safes. Many shipowners and captains were impressed with his sketches and commissioned him to paint images to commemorate their boats. Once he was established, steamship companies even asked him to paint "portraits"
