(62cm (24 1/2in) high, 45cm (17 3/4in) wide) Footnote: Exhibited: Charles Sargeant Jagger Memorial Exhibition, May 21st to June 20th 1935 Literature: McAllister, I. G. Rising British Sculptor: Charles Sargeant Jagger, Studio International, Vol. 54 (Nov. 1914-Feb.1915): pp. 84-99 (illustrated) p.99 captioned 'Design for a Shield by C.S. Jagger' Note: Jagger probably secured this commission through the sculptor W. Goscombe John and chose a Celtic style for the commission because it 'is suitable for any object definitely of Welsh interest and secondly because the Celtic is essentially a "religious art".’ The father and mother mourning their child represents love triumphing over pain. The full-scale model was sent to Wurttemburg, Germany, to be cast in silver. In October 1914 Jagger resigned from the commission because, having enlisted, he felt he could not complete the work. The model sent to Germany is presumed lost, but a bronze cast was listed in the studio inventory at Jagger's death.

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Charles Sargeant Jagger M.C. (British, 1885-1934): A rare patinated bronze miniature bust of David, 1st Earl Beatty signed and inscribed to the rear BEATTY, The Queen's Doll's House by C. S. Jagger, on green Serpentine marble stepped square plinth base, 11.5cm high approximately Footnotes Originally conceived as a pair of busts sometime on or after 1921-24 depicting Admiral Sir David Beatty (1871-1936) and a companion bust of Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1928), the full size models of these smaller editions cast circa 1935 are now unknown. The small scale models were presumably used to promote Queen Mary's Dolls House and were produced in very limited edition - the bust of Beatty was reportedly cast five times and the companion of Haig three times. Admiral Sir David Beatty (1871-1936), Vice-admiral and Commander of the Grand Fleet, received the surrender of the German navy on 21st November 1918. In 1919 he was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet and later that year became First Sea Lord. Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1928) became Commander in Chief of the British army in December 1915. After the war, Haig was created 1st Earl Haig and following his retirement from active service, spent the rest of his life promoting the welfare of ex-servicemen.

MATERIAL/MEDIUM patinated plaster PROVENANCE The British School at Rome Sold, Sotheby's London, November 25th, 1987, lot 91, illustrated Peter Nahum, Ltd., London Acquired from the above, 1987 LITERATURE A. Compton (ed.), Charles Sargeant Jagger, War and Peace Sculpture, exhib. cat., Imperial War Museum, London, 1985, pp. 16-31, 63-67 CATALOGUE NOTE Charles Sargeant Jagger M.C. served as a private in the Artists Rifles and as a Lieutenant in the Worcester Regiment. He was wounded in the trenches, and received the Military Cross. After the war, Jagger was given a number of important commisions, including his best known, the Royal Artillary Memorial at Hyde Park Corner. The present work is a maquette for the West Kirby Memorial (1919-1922) which was commisioned for Grange Hill, above Hoylake and West Kirby. The memorial consists of a granite obelisk against which stand life-size bronzes of a female figure, Humanity and the bronze version of the soldier seen here, originally referred to as Solider on Defence. With the production of a later bronze edition, the title Wipers was added- British military slang for the Belgian town Ypres. Wipers is a fine example of Jagger's realism, but also of his ability to humanize the face of war. His Memorial works aimed, according to his writings, to show 'the Tommy as I knew him in the trenches'.
