Né en Macédoine, il perd très jeune un frère, une sœur et son père. Plus tard, après une tentative sans lendemain d’étudier l’art à Belgrade et un mariage écourté, il retourne vivre chez sa mère dans une grande pauvreté où il commence vers 30 ans à produire des compositions hantées de figures en métamorphose et de détails qui s'imbriquent ou se superposent.
