Illustrated by Ota Janecek with five full-page illustrations, a colophon device, cover, seven initials, pagination and colophon mark. Loose folded sheets in double paper wrappers. Published jointly by Ludmila Jirincova and Ota Janecek as the sixth volume of the J. edition, “in a single copy on Marsov handmade vellum.” Although the colophon states that the book was issued in a single copy, in fact it appeared in only a few copies for friends and collectors. Very rare. Excellent condition.

    After his experience with Post-Cubism, Janeček, after a break from sculpture lasting almost twenty years, developed a distinctive style tending towards abstract forms. In the early 1960s, Janeček's desire to delve directly into the exploration of organic forms continued. He was enthusiastically interested in cell division or the splitting of atoms, as evidenced by his series Shapes, which lasted from 1961 to 1963 and consisted of non-figurative subjects. In his favourite materials, wood or bronze, he materialises legible - albeit very dynamic - shapes, often with open intersections. At that time he personally encountered the work of Henry Moore, with whom he became friends in England. The sculpture on offer, which is accompanied by a certificate, comes from the artist's heirs. His multilayered and numerous works, with which he explored the seen world in detail, range from calligraphic lines and decompositions of surfaces to emotive figurative themes and lyrical records of nature. The present work, Mother, is unusually dark and raw for his oeuvre. It is possible that it is an illustration for a book. His lifelong work was crowned by a major retrospective exhibition at the Mánes in Prague in 1995.     Ota Janeček was active in many artistic disciplines. In addition to his remarkable work as a painter, he also left his mark in sculpture, drawing and graphic art, as well as his extremely extensive work as an illustrator and in applied art and film. He first studied drawing at the Prague Technical School under Cyril Bouda and Oldřich Blažíček, then continued at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in the studios of František Kysela and Josef Novák. His early work focused on figurative subjects and still lifes, in which he developed the artistic innovations of the first half of the 20th century, especially Cubism and Expressionism. A noticeable change came in the late 1940s, when he turned his attention to nature in small and large, while lyricism and a kindly vision of the world became the main ingredients of his distinctive and easily recognizable style. The present painting, Trees in Spring, dated 1951-1952, shows two seemingly disparate approaches to the subject: on the one hand, a naturalistic landscape with a solitary figure of a countrywoman in the middle ground, and on the other, a group of flowering trees in the foreground that form a separate organism with their dramatically intertwined branches.     Between 1943 and 1948, Janeček repeatedly made guest appearances at the SVU Mánes exhibition and was subjected to professional criticism, by which he was considered an exceptional talent. He devoted himself to Cubism and its many possibilities for about five years. He was interested in the rational factor, formal multi-view variations but also in the painterly side of complex and innovative construction. The inspiration here comes directly from Picasso and Braque. After participating in the broad generational show Confrontation in 1945 at the Topič Salon, Janeček also presented a solo exhibition at the Poš Gallery, where he presented a collection of drawings and gouaches from 1943 to 1945.     This rare early work by Ota Janeček dates from the time when he studied at the Prague School of Arts and Crafts (1941-1942), which he did not complete. Soon afterwards he became a member of the SVU Mánes. The still life with a finished cup and a book shows both a certain degree of loose expressiveness and nostalgic lyricism. Later, Ota Janeček stylistically switched to Cubism, where related still lifes of silent reading with a glass and possibly a pipe resonate again. The artist's path led from paintings of figures and still lifes, travel landscape paintings to non-figurative work that shows all the signs of abstraction. The work comes from the artist's studio.     The relief by the prominent Czech painter and sculptor Ota Janeček depicts a standing figure made using the assemblage technique from wooden parts, supplemented with local painting. The work belongs to a small group of the artist's mostly metal sculptures from the late 1960s, which he created in his studio outside of Prague. The work corresponds in meaning and appearance to the broader body of Janeček's work, which at the time represented a shift from the Ecce Homo series (Behold, a Man!) to the situation after 1968 with the tragic metaphor of the man-as-target (Jan Palach). Here Janeček explores the relationship of individualised form, distinctly felt in plasticity, to surface. In this way, the relief follows on from his paintings created at this time, which revolve around the question "what is the world made of?". The relief on offer comes from the artist's estate.     This bravura work on paper by the important Czech artist Ota Janeček dates from the time after his graduation from the School of Applied Arts in Prague, the year he joined the S.V.U. Mánes, where he worked until 1949. His first paintings were marked by the expressiveness typical of the war period. Some of his paintings show inspiration from Amedeo Modigliani, or from the cubism of Pablo Picasso and Emil Filla. It was in 1943 that the strands of his later work began to crystallize, especially his drawings of female nudes. He also begins to exhibit independently for the first time. Apart from painting, printmaking forms a very important part of Janeček's work, especially linocuts, lithography, and drypoint, of which he said: 'I have been doing drypoint from the very beginning and I liked it because I don't need a "kitchen" or a "laboratory". I just need a board and a needle in my pocket. And then - it's a technique of truth. It reveals with absolute certainty how you can draw."
