    JANSSON, Jan (1588-1664). America Noviter Delineata... Engraved map. Amsterdam, 1641. 20" x 23 1/2" sheet. This beautiful and popular map of the Americas was emulated by numerous cartographers and went through various editions. Originally issued by Jodocus Hondius II in 1618 with carte-a-figures borders, it was derived from two earlier maps by Blaeu. North America retains the peninsular California, and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest, the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea on the equator and two engraved scenes, one detailing a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches; the North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage, and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. The map is richly ornamented with a strapwork title cartouche, fleets of ships, and sea monsters.

    This handsome map of southwestern North America focused on Mexico and California is entitled Nova Hispania, et Nova Galicia. This map was published first published by Jan Jansson in Arnhem, in 1636, while this particular copy appears in the French edition published between 1652 and 1658, as can be shown through the text on verso. Many major cities in southwest Mexico are depicted on this map, including modern-day Mexico City, Guadalajara, Compostela, etc. The map. The wonderfully designed cartouche includes the Spanish Habsburg coat of arms. This map gives modern readers insight as to which Mexican cities were primary in the 17th century. Jan Janssonius (also known as Johann or Jan Jansson or Janszoon) (1588-1664) was part of an important family of Dutch publishers, printers, and booksellers. They were responsible for many important publications. Jan Jansson was a noted geographer in his own right. This is from the German edition of the work which was published in Amsterdam in 1656 by the author and Henricus Hondius. Hondius & Jansson were prominent cartographers at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. The volume features two title pages and 114 originally hand-colored maps. It is in the original publisher's binding in cream vellum with gold-leaf gilt designs. The maps cover mostly the Netherlands, France, and Spain. Jan Janssonius (also known as Johann or Jan Jansson or Janszoon) (1588-1664) was part of an important family of Dutch publishers, printers, and booksellers. They were responsible for many important publications. Jan Jansson was a noted geographer in his own right.     This stunning folio map is from the rare German edition Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum orbis terrarum or Theatrum oder Schawbuch des Erdtkreijs. The work was published in 1584 in Antwerp by Plantin. The maps have been described as "the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century." (Van der Krogt) The beautiful maps feature Renaissance-style cartouches and decorative work including vessels, sea and mythological monsters, birds, medallions, et al. Noted art historian, James A. Welu, comments on "their richness of ornamentation, [they are] a combination of science and art that has rarely been surpassed in the history of mapmaking... Ortelius's Theatrum is known for its numerous decorative cartouches, which undoubtedly added to the atlas's long popularity." (Art and Cartography, pp. 145-146) Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is widely recognized as the first modern atlas which shaped the future of cartography throughout the 17th century. It utilized text and maps to fully explore the known world. "The publication of this atlas [ Theatrum, 1570] marked an epoch in the history of cartography. It was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps of the countries of the world based only on contemporary knowledge and in that sense may be called the first modern atlas." (Tooley) Frans Hogenberg also worked on the publication of this atlas. "The characteristic feature of the Theatrum is that it consists of two elements forming a unitary whole: text and maps ... it was the first undertaking of its kind to reduce the best available maps to a uniform format." (Koeman Ort. 16A & 18) Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was one of the most influential cartographers of the 16th century. He was born in Antwerp, Belgium but traveled throughout Europe where he eventually met Mercator. Ortelius became one of the most important cartographers in history.     This handsome, originally hand-colored map is from Jan Jansson's Novus Atlas, Das ist, Welt-beschreibung mit schonen newen auBfuhrlichen Taffeln inhaltende die Konigreiche und Lander des gantzen Erdreichs. This is the German edition of the work which was published in Amsterdam in 1656 by the author and Henricus Hondius. Hondius & Jansson were prominent cartographers at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. Jan Janssonius (also known as Johann or Jan Jansson or Janszoon) (1588-1664) was part of an important family of Dutch publishers, printers, and booksellers. They were responsible for many important publications. Jan Jansson was a noted geographer in his own right. He married the daughter of another prominent mapmaker, Jodocus Hondius, and also worked with her brothers Henricus & Jodocus II. Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) & Jodocus Hondius (1593-1629) were Dutch engravers and mapmakers. They learned the trade from their father, Jodocus Hondius, an engraver and geographer. He was involved with the republishing of Mercator's atlas as well. The brothers worked closely together and took over their father's engraving business. He would later start his own shop in 1621 where he would eventually partner with Jan Janssonius and continued publishing Mercator's work where it would eventually be referred to as the Mercator-Hondius-Janssonius atlas.
