JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826). Notes on the State of Virginia. London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1787. First British edition. THE FIRST BRITISH EDITION OF JEFFERSON'S ONLY LIFETIME-PUBLISHED BOOK, IN PUBLISHER'S BOARDS Octavo (8 ¾ x 5 ½, 223mm x 140mm). With an engraved folding map Country between Albemarle Sound, and Lake Erie, comprehending the whole of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania, with parts of several other of the United States of America by S. J. Neele hand-colored in outline (framed separately, discreet repairs to folds, right margin and lower left corner). Bound in the publishers blue boards, drab paper spine (rebacked). Rebacked to style, upper fore-corner of rear board renewed. The folding letterpress table and title-page have been repaired along the bottom margin. Small mechanical stamp to lower margin of advertisement leaf, moderate foxing throughout, Aa8 roughly opened. With the deckle at the fore- and lower edges preserved. On the front paste-down, the leather ex-libris of Michael Sharpe. Presented in a half-calf clamshell box. Written as a response to the enquiries of Frances ambassador to America, François Barbé Marbois, Jeffersons Notes was not initially intended for publication. It proved, however, to be so comprehensive in its accounting and analysis of Virginia, and so distinctly American what we might now call Jeffersonian in its tone that Jefferson decided to have it printed for public circulation rather than merely for his private circle. Jeffersons boundless curiosity is here on most dazzling display: topography, climate, boundaries, population, colleges, government, commerce, agriculture etc. all have their sections. The tables even include a chart of the Birds of Virginia, indicating Catesbys designations as well as popular names. Elements of Jeffersons political and literary eloquence permeate the book, which he wrote primarily while he was U.S. minister to France. Jeffersons Map of the Country between Albemarle Sound and Lake Erie is the only map that the statesman ever drafted, and one of supreme importance. This map has considerable historical value, serving as primary documentary evidence of the westward movement in Virginia which is recorded cartographically on very few maps. The period between 1750 and 1800 was one of extensive and accelerated migration, which Jeffersons map captures at the mid-point between the map that his father, Peter Jefferson, made with Joshua Fry in 1750, and James Madisons map of 1807. Jeffersons familiarity with the heavily populated area of the state resulted in the location of towns and county seats with greater precision than had been achieved previously. Many natural monuments were marked for the first time on a map, including Zanes and Madisons Caves, the Indian Grave, and the Natural Bridge. This pivotal map, furthermore, served as a forum in which Jefferson could not only record with precision the geography of the state, but also make a political statement regarding the proper western boundary of Virginia and the future division of the western lands into five new states. Three of these he labeled simply as A New State, but two others were named specifically: Kentuckey because it was already one of the western counties of Virginia and known by that name, and Frankland for the area that is now Tennessee. In this way Jeffersons map reflects not just the conventional cartographers task of mapping the land and its boundaries as they stand, but the excitement of delineating the land as it was envisioned to become. Thomas Jefferson Printed broadside document signed (“Th: Jefferson”) as third President, on a full sheet of wove paper (258 x 404 mm; unwatermarked), accomplished in a clerical hand, Washington, 22 November 1804, being the appointment of William Bache as Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia, countersigned by the Secretary of State (“James Madison”), embossed paper seal of the United States; some light, scattered fox spots, some fold separations with tiny losses at intersecting folds. [Accompanied by:] Catherine Wistar Bache, autograph letter signed (“your Sister C. Bache”) to Caspar Wistar (“My Dear Brother”), 2 pages (245 x 168 mm) on a bifolium of laid paper (watermarked JLG), integral leaf with autograph address panel (“Caspar Wistar M. D. | Philadelphia”) and reception docket; some soiling to address panel, seal tear and repair. [And by:] Contemporary clerical copy of a circular letter from Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin to William Bache, 1½ pages (251 x 198) on a bifolium of laid paper (watermarked dove and olive branch | Aimes & Co), “Treasury Department” [Washington,] 12 June 1804, docketed on verso of integral leaf “Copy Letter from the Secy of State to the Collector June 12. 1804.”; faintly browned, upper corners crumpled. The three items housed in a fitted blue cloth portfolio, front cover gilt-lettered. An intriguing small archive related to Dr. William Franklin Bache’s efforts to secure a government sinecure. Although Dr. Bache had a practice, he was experiencing poor health and some financial difficulties at the beginning of the new century. His wife, Catherine Wistar Bache, here writes to her brother, a prominent Philadelphia physician—and successor to Thomas Jefferson as president of the American Philosophical Society—to ask him to intercede with President Jefferson, mentioning, in passing, the pending Louisiana Purchase: “Two days ago I received letters from Doct. Bache … In which Doct. B. wishes me to have an application made to the President for him. He thought of my applying to Mrs. Randolph but Congress being now engaged on the Louisiana business I think the more Immediately an application is made the greater the probability of success, and I also believe that an application from a Philadela. friend particularly from Doct. Wistar will have more weight. William wishes to obtain the Land Office or Surveyor Generalship; the business of the hospital is extremely laborious without an adequate compensation from excessive fatigue. Doct. B. has again been attack'd with a bilious fever which confined him to his bed for a week. He has been in the habit of seeing from 30 to 40 patients daily and without any assistance even to put up medicine which renders it too fatiguing for any person to continue It long without a more liberal establishment. His exertions have been attended with great success, having lost but 7 out of 400 patients and 6 of those were drunkards. … If it is not disagreeable to you to write to the President on the subject it will be conferring on us a very weighty obligation. If you think this request improper don't hesitate to decline it. … From a conversation Dr. Bache had with Mr. Gallatin last winter there is great reason to believe the appointment may be obtained if applied for before the vacancy is filled.” Caspar Wistar honored his sister’s request, writing apologetically to President Jefferson scarcely two weeks later, 16 November 1803, “It has happened to me more than once, to feel great pain & regret while I was writing to you, on account of the trouble I occasioned you, & the liberty I was taking, in soliciting promotion &ca., for the persons in question. I assure you those sensations occur with unusual force on the present occasion, which is this—Dr. Bache has nearly concluded his tour [of] attendance on the Missisippi Boat[-men], for this year, & I should suppose with great success, as he has lost but [7] out of 400 Patients he has however been sick twice, & is so much discouraged, by the smallness of the Compensation, & the severity of the duty, that he has requested my Sister to solicit for him the place of Land-Officer, which he supposes to be vacant” (Papers of Thomas Jefferson, ed. McClure, 42:12–13). Jefferson endorsed Wistar’s letter “Bache Wm to be land officer N.O.,” and while that office did not come to him, another even more suitable did, as evidenced by the present presidential appointment: “To All Who Shall See These Presents, Greeting: Know Ye, That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Integrity, Diligence and Discretion of William Bache, of Pennsylvania I have nominated, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, Do Appoint him Surveyor for the Port of Philadelphia and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the Duties of that Office according to law; And to have and to hold the said Office, with all the Rights and Emoluments thereunto legally appertaining, unto him the said William Bache during the Pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being. In Testimony whereof, I have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed.” Dr. Bache held this position until his death in 1820. The final component of this pocket archive is a clerical circular letter from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin regarding the necessity of bonds for “Vessels being bound for Hispaniola.”

Thomas Jefferson Owned Pipe (Ember) Tongs

18th century pipe or ember tongs, wrought iron, with scissors or accordian action. The lot consists of a shadow box with the tongs mounted onto a backed, heavy woven material. Included is a note on late 19th or early 20th century paper, cut and mounted below the pipe tongs. The note, written in an early hand, is signed by Jamers Terry, a noted antiques dealer and collector of Jeffersonian material. The note reads: "Thomas Jefferson's pipe tongs [underlined] purchased of Miss Cornelia Jefferson Taylor (his great grand-daughter) at "Lego" near Charlottes=ville, Va. April, 1905. Also brass button from Jefferson's chair." Cornelia Jefferson "Miss Nely" Taylor (1849-1937) was a great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. She lived at (and apparently managed) a farm near Charlottesville, Virginia, in the late 19th and early 20th century. The farm was a portion of Jefferson's estate at some point named "Lego". She was well known as a preserver of her family history, and very active at Monticello. She sold the farm in 1919. James Terry (1844-1912). James Terry was interested in a variety of scientific and historical subjects. He spent part of his life in Hartford, CT as an antiqes dealer. His only published work was: Sculptured Anthropoid Ape Heads (1891). While not examined out of the framed shadow box, the tongs certainly appear to be period, as does the note, which is signed by Terry. Provenance: Skinner Auctions, 1993. Overall: H 14-3/4 in. W 16-1/2 in. D 2-1/2 in.

Thomas Jefferson n.p., ca. 1826 Printed Broadside of Jefferson's Last Letter, 15 Days Before Death, on DOI Printed document A printed broadside bearing the text of the last letter written by President Thomas Jefferson before his death in 1826. 1p, measuring 7" x 11". The date of this printing is unknown, but it is likely contemporary to Jefferson's passing. The original letter was written from Monticello on June 24, 1826 to Roger Weightman, late Mayor of Washington, D.C. In the letter, Jefferson declines an invitation to join a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence but expresses his hopes for the legacy of the document. At the top margin is an illustration depicting Lady Liberty displaying the art of printing to figures representing the other four continents. Slightly uneven edges with faint foxing. Some minor creasing in places. Overall very good. In part: "...The kind invitation I receive from you...as one of the surviving signers of an instrument pregnant to our own is most flattering to myself...It adds sensibly to the sufferings of sickness, to be deprived by it of a personal participation in the rejoicings of that day. But acquiescence is a duty, under circumstances not placed among those we are permitted to control. I should indeed with peculiar delight have met and exchanged there [sic] congratulations personally with the small band, the remnant of that host of worthies, who joined with us on that day in the bold and doubtful election we were able to make for our country, between submission or the sword...May it be to the world what I believe it will be...May it be to signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessing of security and self-government. Mediterranean ship's passport, numbered 99, issued to the " Ship called the Maryland of Baltimore," captained by Timothy Gardner and crewed by twenty-three men. It authorized the ship, which had " the burthen of four hundred and sixty four tons or thereabouts... to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hinderance, seizure of molestation..." Thomas Jefferson Autograph Note Signed Ordering Supplies for Monticello. One page, 3.625" x 1.625", no place; April 4, 1822. A manuscript note from Thomas Jefferson ordering ten pounds of coffee and 1000 nails " wrought of preference" from Charlottesville merchant [James] Leitch. It is signed by Jefferson, " Th:J." Similar notes from this period held by the University of Virginia indicate that these types of orders were often carried by Burwell Colbert, an enslaved domestic servant at Monticello who acted as Jefferson's butler and personal valet. While we cannot state with certainty that this order was also carried by Colbert, it is highly probably that he did so as he was the principal runner for Jefferson during his retirement years. Colbert was one of only five people freed in Jefferson's will, in which he was also granted funds to purchase tools needed to support his trade. From the Joel Levin Collection. Thomas Jefferson Autograph Letter Signed on the Construction of the University of Virginia. One page, 7" x 8.25" (sight), " Monticello in Virginia"; May 20, 1824. Letter addressed to Samuel Williams in London, who was acting as an intermediary to Thomas Appleton, concerning commissions for the construction of the University of Virginia. A grateful Jefferson asks Williams to transmit an enclosed letter (not included) and extends his thanks for his assistance. With integral address leaf. It reads, in full: "The construction of the University of Virginia, in which we have been some time engaged, having occasioned us to charge Mr Appleton of Leghorn with several successive commissions for articles we want, I have been indebted to him for the advantage of passing our remittances and letters thro' you. and I have found the passages you have been so good as to give them so safe and expeditious, that I am induced to repeat the liberty by asking your transmission of the inclosed; a liberty indeed which must be from time to time renewed, as we shall have repeated remittances and communications to make him for a year or two to come, postages Etc. will of course find their place in the accts. of remittances. I must therefore ask your indulgence for the present trouble, adding assurances of my thankfulness as well as of my great esteem and respect." Signed, " Th: Jefferson." The University of Virginia stands on land purchased in 1788 by Revolutionary War veteran and the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe. The farmland just outside Charlottesville was purchased from Monroe by the Board of Visitors of what was then Central College in 1817, while Monroe was beginning the first of his own two terms in the White House. Guided by Jefferson, the school would lay its first building's cornerstone later in 1817 and the Commonwealth of Virginia would charter the new university on January 25, 1819, officially changing its name from "Central College" to the University of Virginia. Jefferson was intimately involved in the University, hosting Sunday dinners at his Monticello home for faculty and students, until his death. So taken with the import of what he viewed the University's foundations and potential to be and counting it amongst his greatest accomplishments, Jefferson eschewed mention of his political posts and instead insisted his grave mention only his status as author of the Declaration of Independence, author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and father of the University of Virginia. The letter has been attractively matted and framed with integral address leaf and portrait to the overall size of 24.25" x 15.25". Not examined outside of the frame. From the Joel Levin Collection. Thomas Jefferson Autograph Letter Signed in the Text While Secretary of State. One page of a bifolium, 7.625" x 4.5" (folded – sight), no place; March 20, 1793. Letter addressed to Captain [Nathaniel] Cutting in which Jefferson extends his compliments and writes that President Washington " counts on [Cutting] in the matter spoken of," a reference to Cutting's recent appointment as David Humphrey's secretary for an upcoming mission to Algiers. With integral address leaf. Docketed. It reads, in full: " Th: Jefferson presents his compliments to Capt. Cutting, and informs him that the President counts on him in the matter spoken of. The article of money shall be arranged. / Mar. 20. 1793." David Humphrey, who was engaged as the U.S. Minister to Portugal at this time, had been tasked with negotiating the ransom of American captives with the Dey of Algiers. In a letter written by Jefferson the following day, he informs Humphrey of the mission and Capt. Cutting's appointment, writing: "Mr: Cutting is allowed one hundred Dollars a month, and his expenses, which as soon as he joins you, will of course be consolidated with yours. We have made choice of him as particularly qualified to aid under your direction in the matters of account, with which he is well acquainted." The men arrived in September 1793, but the mission failed when the Dey denied them passports. The American prisoners remained in captivity until October 1796. The letter has been attractively matted and framed with a portrait of Jefferson to the overall size of 31" x 21". Not examined outside of the frame. Mediterranean ship's passport, numbered 53, issued to the " Ship West Point of New York," captained by Judah Paddock and crewed with fifteen men. It authorized the ship, which had " the burthen of Three Hundred sixteen &79/95 tons or thereabouts... to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hinderance, seizure of molestation..." Signed by Jefferson as president, " Th: Jefferson". Countersigned by James Madison as secretary of state. With maritime vignettes and a blind-embossed paper seal affixed at the lower-left corner. The passport has been handsomely matted and framed to the overall size of 15" x 20". A typed transcription of an August 27, 1796 circular by Secretary of State T[homas] Pickering to the collector of the port of New York is affixed on the verso of the frame. Not examined outside of the frame. Condition: Light wrinkling and curling. Fold crosses one letter of Madison's signature. Small dampstain at bottom right margin.
