Paul Jenkins Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1923 - d. 2012

(b Kansas City, Missouri, 1923) American painter. Under the G.I. Bill, Paul Jenkins attended the Art Students League in New York from 1948-52, during which time he studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor. Jenkins' pictorial universe consists of streaks of color that awaken associations. He produced his first picture with diluted paints in 1951; later they were executed as pour pictures. The layers of pigment covering the picture supports are whisper-thin. Jenkins' handling is intuitive yet informed by philosophy. He is receptive to sources of inspiration provided by the manifold impressions he has of his immediate surroundings. His aesthetic experiments usually involve the prismatic colors of the rainbow. However, Jenkins also works up the impressions he has received on his extensive travels. In such cases, it is the distinctive color of a particular place that he finds most fascinating. Sehr seltene und ungewöhnlich große Arbeit des Künstlers. Eins von 45 Exemplaren. - Das Werk steht exemplarisch für Jenkins' Ansatz, Farbe als zentrales Ausdrucksmittel einzusetzen. Jenkins setzt hier einen grünen und einen roten Balken gegeneinander und entwickelt aus der Bildmitte heraus seine tachistische Bewegeungsdynamik. Seine Technik, bei der er die Farbe oftgießt und lenkt, lässt organische, fließende Formen entstehen, die dem Betrachter viel Raum für Assoziationen bieten. Die Bildwirkung ist geprägt von einer dynamischen, fast eruptiven Farbigkeit und einer Balance zwischen Kontrolle und Zufall. Der Titel verweist auf Katsushika Hokusai, der im 19. Jahrhundert lebte und mit seinen ikonischen Wellenmotiven weltweiten Einfluss ausübte. Jenkins adaptiert hier nicht direkt Hokusais Motive, sondern spielt vielmehr mit der Idee des Japonismus Das Werk verbindet Jenkins' charakteristische, zufallsbasierte Malweise mit einer Reflexion über die kulturelle Begegnung zwischen Ost und West. Very rare and unusual large work by the artist. One of 45 copies. - Lithograph. Signed and numbered. Splendid print in delicate tonality of the format-filling depiction. The work exemplifies Jenkins' approach of using color as a central means of expression. Here, Jenkins juxtaposes a green and a red bar and develops his tachist dynamic movement from the center of the picture. His technique, in which he often pours and directs the paint, creates organic, flowing forms that offer the viewer plenty of room for associations. The pictorial effect is characterized by a dynamic, almost eruptive colourfulness and a balance between control and chance. The title refers to Katsushika Hokusai, who lived in the 19th century and exerted a worldwide influence with his iconic wave motifs. Jenkins does not directly adapt Hokusai's motifs here, but rather plays with the idea of Japonism. The work combines Jenkins' characteristic, chance-based painting style with a reflection on the cultural encounter between East and West.

Jenkins’s technique of the controlled poured canvas is characteristic of many of his artworks. He used the technique of pouring liquid paint, oils, acrylics, and enamels directly onto canvases and allowed the paint to drip, bleed, and pool naturally into fluid abstract washes of colour. His finished works are celebrated for their vibrant, jewel-toned, and translucent colours. The layers often resemble natural elements like oceanic pools, ceramic glazes, wind, tides, or vibrant smoke. Phoenix (1955) is no exception. His early years based in the Midwest laid the foundations for what was to define his working practice. Growing up in Kansas City, Jenkins worked in a local commercial ceramic factory. This experience later proved crucial in defining his artistic practice through his manipulation of materials, which went beyond traditional oil and paint. His experience with the ceramics craft enabled Jenkins to fully understand both colour theory and how to manipulate materials to create fluidity within his works. Paul Jenkins occupies a unique and vital space in the history of mid-century modernism. While he is often categorised within the broader umbrella of Abstract Expressionism, his true impact lies in how he bridged the gap between different artistic philosophies and pushed abstract art toward a more fluid, process-driven future. Jenkins’s art occupies a space between the bold, aggressive, and impactful Abstract Expressionism of New York, expressed in works by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and the materiality and unconventional approach used by European artists such as Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Soulages. While Paul Jenkins is frequently discussed alongside the pioneers of the Colour Field movement, his relationship to it is nuanced. He was certainly a peer to Colour Field giants like Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis, and like them, he was obsessed with expansive areas of vibrant, poured colour. However, Jenkins deliberately stood apart from the strict Colour Field dogma. He engineered a completely different technical approach that gave his work a distinct, luminous signature because he used a primed surface; his paintings interact with light in a way that traditional Colour Field paintings do not. Jenkins was a maverick who defied strict categorisation, and because of this, he served as a crucial bridge between several major artistic movements, philosophies, and even continents.

In 1981, year of realization of "Continental Divide", Jenkins had already consolidated his characteristic technique: controlled pours of acrylic paint on the canvas, manipulated by means of inclinations and tools like spatulas or blades, creating luminous and almost translucent flows of color. The title, which alludes to the continental divide, suggests a geographical and symbolic metaphor, in keeping with his interest in natural phenomena, light and energy. A renowned abstract expressionist painter, Paul Jenkins studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League of New York (1948-1952) and met Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman. In 1954, after traveling to Italy, he moved to Paris, where he had his first solo exhibition at Studio Paul Facchetti. The following year, in 1955, Zoe Dusanne Gallery in Seattle presented his first solo exhibition in the United States; the Seattle Museum was the first museum to acquire his work. In 1959 he began titling his canvases "Phenomena," and gradually moved from oil and enamel to acrylic. During the 1960s, he traveled in Europe, Russia, India and Japan, where he worked with Yoshihara and the Gutai of Osaka. In 1983 he was appointed Commandeur des Arts et Lettres de la Republique de France. Considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century, his works are in the collections of the world's leading museums, including the Tate Gallery, London; the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou and the National Museum of Modern Art, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.

Signed, dated 1981, and numbered 46/94 in pencil bottom left.  Overall Size: 39 1/2 x 48 3/8 in.  Sight Size: 29 1/2 x 38 in.  William Paul Jenkins, known professionally by his middle and last name, was born on July 12th, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, and showed artistic promise early on, working as a molder and sculptor in a ceramics factory during his teens and enrolling at the Kansas City Art Institute at just fourteen. After graduating in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps and moved to New York City after the War to study at the Art Students League, and through the early 1950s he experimented widely with style and medium, influenced by artists such as Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor, emerging as a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement of the New York School. In 1953 Jenkins relocated to Paris with his first wife, Esther Ebenhoe, and their daughter, beginning a lifelong pattern of working between Paris and New York after his first solo exhibition the following year. With his second wife, artist Alice Baber, he helped develop the American Artists Center, which became influential in the rise of Postmodern art, and explored lithography, playwriting, and innovative pigment-layering techniques, later shifting from oil to acrylic and favoring an ivory knife over brushes. Returning to sculpture in the 1970s, he remained deeply engaged with artistic communities on both continents, with retrospectives, film appearances, teaching, and international exhibitions solidifying his reputation, and by his death on June 9th, 2012, Jenkins was recognized as a major force in American Lyrical Abstraction and French Tachisme.
