Inventory #284 Alfred Julio Jensen (1903 - 1981) was active/lived in New York, California / Guatemala. Alfred Jensen is known for Minimal, pop word play, collage, mural. Abstractionist Alfred Julio Jensen used rich color and thick paint in geometric designs that ranged from suggestions of symbolism and abstract-expressionism to minimalism. He was born in 1903 in Guatemala City of Danish, German and Polish heritage. Before eventually graduating from the Fine Arts School in San Diego, Jensen had experienced various travels and vocations. From seven to fourteen years of age, he studied in Denmark, then went to sea, later farming in Guatemala. Jensen was one of those fortunate artists who found a wealthy patron, thus relieving him of the necessity of earning a living. He met Saidie May in Munich, Germany, where he had gone, after San Diego, to study the traditional drawing style of the masters. He and May remained together until her death in 1951, and then Jensen became a life-long student of science, mathematics and philosophy. His twenty-year study of Goethe's color theory resulted in diagrammatic canvases exhibited in his first one-man show in 1953, at the relatively late age of fifty, in New York City at the Heller Gallery. He was awarded a Tamarind Fellowship in 1965, which resulted in twenty lithographs, "A Pythagorean Notebook." Alfred Jensen died in New Jersey in 1981. "Paintings and Diagrams from the Years 1957-1977," Jensen's first major retrospective exhibition took place at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo the year before he died. The show toured major museums in America, and was the United States entry in Brazil's XIV International Sao Paulo Biennial. The artist's work is in the Baltimore Museum of Art; Dayton Art Institute, Ohio; Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

Jensens theoretische Grundlage der Malerei basierte auf Johann Wolfgang von Goethes Farbenlehre und der Auseinandersetzung mit Texten von Leonardo da Vinci. Ferner beschäftigte sich Jensen mit mathematischen Theorien und Zahlensystemen. Unter anderem thematisierte er in seiner Malerei gelegentlich den Maya-Kalender. Er beschäftigte sich mit diesem komplexen System zur Zeitmessung insbesondere im Rahmen seiner Studienreisen durch Mittelamerika. In 1962, the long-standing and successful collaboration between the art dealer and collector Eberhard W. Kornfeld and Jensen began. The artist was increasingly invited to exhibitions in Switzerland. In addition, private collectors became aware of his work. In 1961, the first solo exhibition took place at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and in 1964 a retrospective was shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1973, the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover organised a solo exhibition, which was subsequently shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk (Denmark), at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and at the Kunsthalle Bern. The present geometric painting '120 Checkers' (1963) was part of the aforementioned travelling exhibition. The title 'Checkers' refers to a variant of the classic game of draughts, played primarily in the USA and in the international English-speaking world. The title evokes, at the centre of the composition, a game board with small black-and-white squares and coloured playing pieces. The present abstract work combines an abstract network of small squares, diamonds and diagonals with a palette of primary and secondary colours. Jensen’s theoretical foundation for painting was based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's colour theory and his engagement with texts by Leonardo da Vinci. Furthermore, Jensen was concerned with mathematical theories and number systems. Among other things, he occasionally addressed the Maya calendar in his paintings. He studied this complex system of timekeeping especially during his study trips through Central America. The present painting is an impressive synthesis of various artistic design principles that ultimately lead to a higher aesthetic. In very good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Alfred Jensen lernte in jungen Jahren die amerikanische Kunstsammlerin Saidie Adler May (1879-1951) kennen. Adler sammelte moderne Kunst und investierte schon früh in die Kunst des abstrakten Expressionismus und des Surrealismus. Zu ihrer Sammlung zählten unter anderem Werke von Alfred Jensen, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso und Jackson Pollock. Den damals jungen Jensen unterstützte sie bei seinen Studien. Sie gingen zusammen nach Paris, wo Alfred Jensen an der Académie scandinave studierte. Jensen beriet Adler beim Aufbau ihrer Sammlung und liess sich 1938 mit ihr in New York nieder. Nach Saidie Adlers Tod im Mai 1951 widmete sich Jensen, nun schon in fortgeschrittenem Alter, ausschliesslich und intensiv seinem Kunstschaffen. Er bezog ein eigenes Atelier und nahm 1953 erstmals an einer Ausstellung in der John Heller Gallery teil. Weitere Gruppenausstellungen folgten und er machte die Bekanntschaft mit Mark Rothko und Sam Francis. Im Jahr 1958 erwarb der damalige Direktor des Basler Kunstmuseums, Arnold Rüdlinger (1919-1967), das erste Gemälde Jensens für die Schweizer Sammlergruppe "La Peau de l'Ours". Von da an wurde Alfred Jensen zunehmend zu Ausstellungen in der Schweiz eingeladen und in der Folge kam es auch zu Käufen durch Schweizer Privatsammler. Alfred Jensen met the American art collector Saidie Adler May (1879-1951) at a young age. Adler collected modern art and invested early on in the art of Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. Her collection included works by Alfred Jensen, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock, among others. She supported the then young Jensen in his studies. They went to Paris together, where Alfred Jensen studied at the Académie scandinave. Jensen advised Adler in building her collection and settled with her in New York in 1938. After Saidie Adler's death in May 1951, Jensen, now already at an advanced age, devoted himself exclusively and intensively to his art. He moved into his own studio and participated for the first time in an exhibition at the John Heller Gallery in 1953. Further group exhibitions followed, and he became acquainted with Mark Rothko and Sam Francis. In 1958, the then director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Arnold Rüdlinger (1919-1967), acquired Jensen's first painting for the Swiss collectors' group "La Peau de l'Ours". From then on, Alfred Jensen was increasingly invited to exhibitions in Switzerland, which also led to purchases by Swiss private collectors. The present painting is a beautiful and typical example of the painted grids of colorful rectangles and tiny squares that Jensen lacquered in thick impasto. In very good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Während eines Sommeraufenthalts in den USA lernte der damals junge Alfred Jensen die amerikanische Sammlerin mit deutschen Wurzeln Saidie Adler May (1879-1951) kennen. Zwischen den beiden entstand in der Folge eine langjährige Freundschaft. Sie unternahmen gemeinsame Reisen und die um 24 Jahre ältere Saidie war für Jensen sowohl Freundin als auch Förderin. Im Jahr 1938 liessen sich Saidie und Alfred in New York nieder. Nach dem Tod Adlers im Jahr 1951 konzentrierte sich Jensen zunehmend auf seine künstlerische Karriere. Er bezog ein eigenes Atelier und nahm 1953 erstmals an einer Ausstellung in der John Heller Gallery teil. Ausserdem partizipierte er an zahlreichen thematischen Gruppenausstellungen. 1964, dem Entstehungsjahr des hier angebotenen Gemäldes, wurde Jensen zur documenta 3 eingeladen, zwei weitere Teilnahmen folgten. Jensens Bilder fanden in den späten 1950er- und frühen 1960er-Jahren zusehends Eingang in bedeutende institutionelle und private Sammlungen. Nach seinem Tod widmete das Guggenheim Museum dem Künstler eine umfassende Retrospektive. During a summer stay in the USA, the then young Alfred Jensen met the American collector of German descent Saidie Adler May (1879-1951). A long-lasting friendship developed between the two. Inventory #284 Alfred Julio Jensen (1903 - 1981) was active/lived in New York, California / Guatemala. Alfred Jensen is known for Minimal, pop word play, collage, mural. Abstractionist Alfred Julio Jensen used rich color and thick paint in geometric designs that ranged from suggestions of symbolism and abstract-expressionism to minimalism. He was born in 1903 in Guatemala City of Danish, German and Polish heritage. Before eventually graduating from the Fine Arts School in San Diego, Jensen had experienced various travels and vocations. From seven to fourteen years of age, he studied in Denmark, then went to sea, later farming in Guatemala. Jensen was one of those fortunate artists who found a wealthy patron, thus relieving him of the necessity of earning a living. He met Saidie May in Munich, Germany, where he had gone, after San Diego, to study the traditional drawing style of the masters. He and May remained together until her death in 1951, and then Jensen became a life-long student of science, mathematics and philosophy. His twenty-year study of Goethe's color theory resulted in diagrammatic canvases exhibited in his first one-man show in 1953, at the relatively late age of fifty, in New York City at the Heller Gallery. He was awarded a Tamarind Fellowship in 1965, which resulted in twenty lithographs, "A Pythagorean Notebook." Alfred Jensen died in New Jersey in 1981. "Paintings and Diagrams from the Years 1957-1977," Jensen's first major retrospective exhibition took place at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo the year before he died. The show toured major museums in America, and was the United States entry in Brazil's XIV International Sao Paulo Biennial. The artist's work is in the Baltimore Museum of Art; Dayton Art Institute, Ohio; Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

Wieland Schmied schrieb dazu: "Die Zahl der Ordnungssysteme, in die sich Alfred Jensen versenkt hat, ist scheinbar unbegrenzt: die Kalender der Maya und der Inka und die Baupläne der mexikanischen und ägyptischen Pyramiden, indianische und chinesische Zahlensysteme, Schriften, Symbole und Hieroglyphen, die Regel des Goldenen Schnitts, die Lehren der Pythagoräer und der Orphiker, die Zeichen und Häuser des Tierkreises, das delphische Orakel und die Weissagungen des I Ging, Leonardo da Vincis Schriften und Goethes Farbenlehre". Vorliegend greift Jensen das Zusammenspiel von geraden und ungeraden Zahlen auf und transponiert dieses farblich und geometrisch auf die Leinwand.
